notes

GHETTO PONY is three middle-age professionals who have conducted extensive studies on school children. The results showed that today's kids identify with the noise aspect of music just as much as the tonal arrangement. Therefore a good sense of aesthetics is necessary to properly compliment the melody.

The three men met at one of their sister's wedding reception. Upon reminiscing about their long-gone youth, they found a common link. All of them have a failed teenage rock-star fantasy. "Oh how sweet it could have been if I only kept practicing." -said one of the future G.P.'s "And look at us now, all rich and miserable." -another whispered bitterly. "Let's do it boys! Let's rock ourselves poor!" -exclaimed the third. So they liquidated all their assets, donated their money to various animal shelters and moved to a run-down apartment in downtown Montreal (they heard about the hype). The three G.P.'s decided that the rest of their lives would be better spent trying to reach the youth of today through bass, beats, shouts and cry-outs, than keeping their investment portfolio's in good shape.

  • A Unique Blend

Ghetto Pony's "Post Apocalyptic Bubblegum Music" has all the trappings of a small, local, scenester album, but with enough ambition in the arrangements to make it universally appealing. Electric tones, beatdriven, simultaneously somber and silly, this album will make you feel instantly hip and elitist without having to suffer through some unlistenable invisible consensus crap.

this album is a guaranteed good listen. with beats great enough to dance to and lyrics deep enough to contemplate you can't help but feel cheerful while this buzzes through the speakers. i highly recommend this album if you enjoy semi-similar artists such as: the faint, bloc party, and arcade fire.

  • best freakin compilation of songs and music ever

the harsh sounds and sweet beats of this cd make it possibly one of the best cds i have ever listened to. The compilation of the drums and simulations create a haarmony like no other, i have not gone a day so far that i have not listened to at least one of the songs from this albulm(i have had it for a number of weeks now) i would definatly advise any one i talk to, to get it strait away...u can not live, without hearing these sounds

  • Wicked Thoughts: On "Post Apocalyptic Bubblegum Music"
    author: John Cameron

I recently downloaded the demo of Fruity Loops again. I’d say that it’s reminded me how fun it is to love software, if not for the fact that I received We Love Katamari for Christmas. It’s really very fun. With Fruity Loops, you can do everything from crazy, weird breakbeat rhythms to fun, crazy synthesizers, and I’ve been experimenting with both and everything in between. If you use it right, you can concoct some genius-level electro-pop with a couple of mouse clicks; however, picking the right clicks is the tough part. Ghetto Pony have got making the right clicks down to a science. Their album, Post Apocalyptic Bubblegum Music, is a mind-bending mixture of beats and live instrumentation, harsh production values shielding precious pop metals, heavy electronics combined with, inexplicably, pianos. Opener “All The Good Kids” establishes this, with its glitchy beats, distorted vocal hooks, and ridiculously twee piano bits. It’s a killer couple of minutes, bringing a cheesy but satisfied smile to your face and making you kind of want to learn how to play the piano bits so you can impress your friends. Then you realize that nobody will have heard of a band that spray-paints its CDs in order to decorate them. Mid-album highlight “Make Believe,” though, is the real track to be listening to. Maudlin piano chords and wistful singing float over tense electronic beats, and then it goes raw but tense, like they’re letting go as much energy as they possibly dare. Effects are layered onto a wordless chorus, distorting the lead singer’s voice into a sound new and disturbing. “What an ugly feeling,” the second verse begins, and somehow you can sympathize. Ghetto Pony are dynamic but should, by all logic, not be; they should be lifeless and contrived. Instead, they combine unlikely elements—zealous pop, abrasive beat-noises, and unusual instrumentation—into something likeable and compelling. “Post Apocalyptic” might be a little over-ambitious, but for the few people who discover Ghetto Pony they will stick with the music for a while.

  • Ghetto Pony = Music of the Future
    author: Cloud Kruschke

When I say Music of the Future, I mean to say that in the future, this is the kind of music that will become copied by everyone and then played on radio stations everywhere. Because the music of today, is so bland that people just get sick of it. (the music that is popular and played everywhere). Ghetto Pony is the type of music that makes me feel really inspired and creative. So.. here is my review on their debut album (i will go in song order, reviewing each song as i listen to the cd, because those are the kind of reviews that i enjoy the most. Post Apocalyptic Bubblegum Music ALL THE GOOD KIDS Immediately you are pushed into a world of catchy beats. My favourate part about this song is the keyboards (which i tend to enjoy a lot in G.P.'s music) When i hear this song it always makes me feel like i'm overjoyed, like there is a real groovy vibe flowing through me when i hear it. It's short but sweet, and as far as i'm concerned, it is a Great album starter. THE DELAY ah yes, the song that got me hooked on G.P. The Delay is one of those songs that you can probably show to anyone, and there is this feeling of immediate love for the music, and the lyrics, for me the lyrics are just as important (and good) as the music. Again the keyboard is very prominent. This is one of my favourate songs on PABM BRIDGER ONE I'm not sure if that is the actual name of the song, as it's not listed on the cd, but when my friend showed me them online when i first heard them, he had all these unlisted tracks called 'Bridgers'. Which in short, they are not 'songs' but short skits of music with samples, and in this case, someone imitating the scratching of a vinyl, which when i first heard i had to laugh because it sounds so silly, but really its a good lead into the next track. THE PRINCE SONG this song we hear the real scratching of the vinyl that was being imitated before. I really like the lyrics, which to me are about someone who treats his woman badly and is like a message to those people to stop shouting and instead hold her and listen to what she has to say. The music is softer and not as fast paced, which fits the mood of the song well. BRIDGER TWO This track is neat; it has a cool beat and nice keys. and the sample (i think it is a sample) is of someone saying 'Shove it in shove it in'. in a similar tone of the commercial for those plug in air fresheners. Again it leads into the next track nicely. 3/4 A slower tempo and some nice clicks and tischs. The drum programming is very excellent on this song. And again the lyrics are very powerful to me, it makes me think about how when some one either thinks they do or really falls in love with some one, and then suddenly that person leaves you and you're just stuck there with that feeling of love for this person. And you can go on with your life but really, you'll always keep thinking about what you could have been and what you could have had and wondering. 'what did i do wrong?'. BRIDGER THREE Some fuzzy sounds and samples of children, and some one saying 'Peter can you see me?' I'm guessing this is referring to the band member Peter. It starts out sounding all muffled and then suddenly it's like they took the hand off the microphone and you can hear it clearly, and then it just kind of fades out with clicks and flows into the next track. MAKE BELIEVE The keys are the start of the song which are very beautiful, and then the drum maschine kicks in, kicking out a very catchy beat. This is another of my favourites on PABM. To me it's about remembering what it was like to be a child, and not having to think about the 'real world' and just playing and going on with your day. Peter does a very nice kind of moan slash sigh, which i think adds a lot of emotion to the song. I love to listen to this music when i'm riding in a car and just look out the window and sing along to it. I just love this song so much. One of the most standout songs. THERE WAS AN ACCIDENT The drums have a clashing and pounding sound to them which go a long nicely with the acoustic guitar which is first prominent on this song. The song talks about someone who was 'on his way' but got in an accident and now he'll never be there. I think of it as a sad song, but not one that makes me want to cry, but one that makes me think about people that have passed away. Near the end we hear a sample which i think i recognize from the movie All Quiet On The Western Front. A man is talking to another man about how he shot a guy in battle and feels bad about it because he didn't even know the man. The sample (and song) ends when it is slowed to a halt. JULIE It starts out with more vinyl scratching and a voice edit and then kicks into the main rhythm of the song which again is very catchy. This is another song that a lot of people i show get attached to easily. The song talks about how some one is feeling down about loving some one and the person just can't return the feeling. And in the end, they realize that things will always get better no matter how bad they get and that whatever gets thrown at you, you have to deal with it. BRIDGER FOUR The music sounds like a lot of twisty digital tweaks and such. this one there are vocals and a distorted sample. and like the previous Bridgers it leads into the next track. WICKED THOUGHTS I really like everything about this song, the rhythms, the guitar, the bass, the keys, and the lyrics of course. In this song the lyrics are shorter and the music goes on more. This song to me is about someone who is dreaming and in his dreams he finds more peace and enjoys them more because they allow him to give up his 'Wicked Thoughts' and give him what he really wants to have back. After the short vocal part the song leads into a very nice keyboard solo which i think is some of the best on the album. The ending of this song is the catchiest you can get. It just makes you want to close your eyes, bob your head, tap your feet, and think about how much you love it when you can let go of all the things that bring you down. THE DEVIL'S CHILDREN Some nice sand shaker type sounds appear in the right speaker. The guitar and bass have a nice rhythm that carries the song on. What i think this song does, is show to the listener what much of the children of today have become due to the influence of the media and television. and how you feel sorrow for them, because you know it's not their fault. This is the last real song on the album, which in itself is a very good ending, which kind of lets you take a look at yourself and everyone around you. And you should ask yourself, are you really happy being who you are? or are you not you, but instead living someone else’s life? POST APOCALYPTIC BUBBLEGUM MUSIC This song isn't listed on the album either but i assume that is the title. It starts with a sound of reversed music almost. and there is a steady beat while Peter repeats the title of the album a few times, as in like a closer saying 'What you have just heard was, Post Apocalyptic Bubblegum Music, we hoped you have enjoyed it' and just like that the cd is over. From the first time i heard an mp3 file my friend sent me of The Delay, i knew that Ghetto Pony would be something that i would become a huge fan of. I bought their album through Peter on their home site. To me, this band is a much bigger influence than some of the bands that i listen to a lot that aren’t local bands, or bands that are generally recognized all over. Because Ghetto Pony is a band that hardly anyone i live near knows of. And actually before i got into them, i don't think anyone within a 100 mile radius of me knew of them. And being this great of a band, and being as unheard of around here as they are. it just makes me think about how much i can do and want to do. and when i hear a band like Nickleback on the radio, i just think to myself 'one day they'll be playing some Ghetto Pony on here instead.'
