notes
Guitarist, songwriter and singer, Vicki Genfan has been called the 'Jimi Hendrix of acoustic guitar'. A fiercely original musician and composer, likened in review to a "composite of Jonatha Brooke from the Story and Michael Hedges", Vicki has been supporting the release of her highly acclaimed debut CD "Outside The Box". Bill Milkowski writes in Acoustic Guitar Magazine, "Her dazzling displays of two handed tapping, bell-like harmonics and funky bass note slapping, along with her deft fingerstyle approach, have guitar aficionados in the house sitting slack-jawed in sheer awe."
Vicki has performed extensively to an ever growing national and international audience. Her stunning featured performance in September 2002 at the International Open Strings Guitar Festival in Germany brought Vicki's compelling and groundbreaking musicianship into focus for her distinct and visionary artistry. Ulrich Olshausen of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung writes, "Vicki...has brewed her own style of wiping chords, airy tapping techniques and a precise melody-play that has no name...and creates a new kind of singer-songwriter culture."
Transmuting jazz, funk, pop, and world music in a contemporary folk alchemy, Vicki draws from a diverse palette of harmonies, rhythms and modal tunings. Studied in both classical and jazz guitar, these elements fuse with her grace, passion and charisma to create an electrifying and entirely singular sonic journey of depth, inspiration and pure magic.
Vicki's characteristic sounds and tunes can be heard on numerous recordings for radio and television jingles, the Stephen King book on tape, "Wastelands", and in performances on albums by artists such as Sheena Easton, Donna Summer, Melba Moore and Dee Carstensen to name a few. Her debut CD, "Outside the Box" has received wide recognition and has won a variety of awards including the Just Plain Folks Awards in the categories of best solo instrumental and female singer-songwriter.
In addition to "Outside the Box", Germany's 'Acoustic Music Records' has just released "Vicki Genfan - Live", a recording of the Open Strings Guitar Festival Concert. Vicki is also midway through the recording of the next studio CD which has a release date of March, 2004.
When not on the road, Vicki maintains her home base in New Jersey and performs frequently in the north-east. She loves to teach and sees private students as well as giving clinics and workshops on some of the special techniques she has developed. She is currently working on a teaching video as well as a written music book of her compositions.

The best I've experienced since Hedges
author: Max Goldston Western AgeBeautiful use of non-standard tunings,Hedges style technique with a unique and personal feel.Very original, tasteful and sweet.Thank you Vickie, for so unselfishly sharing your soul---you have truly inspired me!
Excellent. Period.
author: francesco de lucaThe opening song "catch me" is a brilliant example of great guitar playing blended with female voice looking at some ethnic roots. The overall outstanding point of this player is her strong sense of rythm, and her succesfully pushing the boundaries of guitar tecniques. Higly recomended. A++++
Made me wonder why I even bother trying to play...OUCH!!! & AHHH!!
author: Tommie Jo PhilipsenWarning: DO NOT LISTEN... if you are an insecure musician. Listening consumption of this CD will make most of us trying to make Music wonder if there will be any room left when this huge resonation finally fades. Scarery...in a wonderful way!
beautiful, brilliant, badass, virtuoso acoustic guitar funkster & tapper, melodi
author: Karen SegalBeautiful, brilliant, & badass! Virtuoso funkster and tapper minus the cliches. Thoroughly melodic and musical. Great vocals. Authentic presence, no pretense. And she's a cutie! Wow! Doesn't get much better than this . . .
Absolutely awesome with a hint of magic!
author: Dennis GraysonI came across Vicki Genfan after listening to an NPR bit on gender bending strings, female guitarists of different genres. After browing Ms. Genfan's website I ordered the cd and found that it surpassed my muscial expectations. Each song brings something different to the table. While I prefer the instrumentals, Vicki's voice works well with the sounds of her guitar. Offerings and New Grass are personal favorites of mine.
joyful. masterful Vicki and her Guitar!
author: RedjMusic(BMI)I have known Vicki nearly 10 yrs and her music is the real deal. If you haven't seen her live in NYC or her other shows...she's amazing and watching her play the guitar is mezmerizing. If you aren't near a gig happening...pick up this cd via cdbaby.com You will notbe sorry!
Best CD I've ever bought!
author: Jae C. SteeleI had never heard of Vicki Genfan. Someone in the know, however, heard me play guitar and suggested I check Vicki out. (What flattery!) There are only two other times that music has had the effect Vicki's CD had on me the moment it started to play: When I walked into a music store with Billy Joel's "Travelling Prayer" piano break playing, and the first time I heard John Fahey on vinyl (thought it was Kotke, Lang and Fahey playing together!). I am very impressed with Ani, but I have to say that Vicki Genfan surpasses every one of these musicians in my ratings book. If I had the $500, I'd gladly send it to her for the CD pre-buy promotion she's running, just so she could come to my house and I could sit and watch her play these magnificent pieces. Her "offerings" truly are an indescribable gift. If you're into the best of accoustic guitar with superb vocals and great songwriting, you've gotta own "Out of the Box". An incredible must have!

An acoustic blend of traditional folk, with touches of funk, jazz, world, classical and new age. Great songs. Great vocals. And AMAZING Michael Hedges style guitar!
Astonishingly good
author: Andrew ClarkeI bought this from CD Baby after hearing some tracks on 'just plain folks'. Having heard it, I have given up the guitar and play the Ukulele instead. Her technique is just so good, and her songs so lyrical, one feels an idiot attempting to play the damned thing.
Really enjoyable, original, you gotta love it!
author: Mike BarrSweet tunes, really interesting guitar tunings, it has a great beat and you can even dance to it. I always wanted to be on American Bandstand and say that.
amazing
author: Chris Mthis album is a great mix of light tunes and a good-hearted message. wonderfully uplifting and great for just in the morning, right before sunrise :) New Grass is great... listen to the sample!
Groovy and warmly regarding the guitar playing and the voice-a gift for the soul
author: Joerg Nassler GermanyI saw Vicki in Vancouver too & she was one of the best surprises to me. Guitar playing in a perfect style but not the technic is the goal, it´s the groovy and the personal feeling what she is giving the audience. In combination with really different musical styles and her voice it´s a cd you can listen in different situations and again and again. Thanks for this gift. The only one fault it´s too short!!!
Her gift takes me places.
author: Cameron DubesAn absolutely wonderful CD, I've been recommending it to friends. Vicki's gift of music and talent for the guitar takes me places ... I lose myself as she performs masterfully. I simply smile and enjoy the ride!
guitar goddess
author: Jill KnightI had the pleasure of hearing Vicki at the Folk Alliance Conference in Vancouver and it was the highlight of my trip. She weaves a web of magic and leaves you breathless. Her music is uplifting and takes you on a spiritual journey...I can't wait to share this with my friends.
Rhythmically and Harmonically Pleasing
author: Patricia RachalWhile I have never heard of Vicki Genfan before, I was pleasantly surprised when a friend turned me on to her sound. There is a warmth of tone and pleasingly subtle melodic nuasances that surround the listener. A wonderful folk blend. I hope to hear more of Vicki Genfan's music in the future. Great guitarist!!!!!
A wild, beautiful, haunting album. Genfan's singing and playing is astonishing.
author: Robert GomesAmazing. Genfan's playing is intense, dense, and soaring. Beautifully intricate. Wild use of guitar as percussive instrument. Her voice is warm, makes you sit up and listen to the lyrics...which are simple and haunting. I wanted more and more. Loved it.
