  • ...fails miserably.

The Gelatin Boys seem to be from New York, judging by some recent show dates posted on their website, but they have a Swedish guitarist and a singer who sounds like he has a slight German accent. They play relatively standard bar-rock, which tries to be funny but fails miserably (unless you think a lyric like "Let's spend the day in my car upstate / We'll eat boysenberries while we masturbate", from "Upstate", is funny -- I don't). Their website claims that all of the members of the band are "jazz school grads", but they freely admit that you wouldn't be able to tell from listening to their music. Fair enough. However, they also say that they "write about anger and sadness but put them across in accessible ways". Questionable usage aside, I don't see anything particularly angry or sad in these songs -- all I see is sophomoric and silly. I will admit to the fact that everything on Beware the Gelatin Boys is played quite competently (excepting, perhaps, Dan Shuman's overly Lux Interior-like vocal affectations); however, the same could be said for any rank bar band playing '70s covers on Friday night at the Polynesia Lounge. Basically, the Boys sound like they're trying for their own version of the Young Fresh Fellows' silly pub punk rock. Unfortunately, without a Scott McCaughey (or a Kurt Bloch, for that matter) among them, they fall on their faces. Beware of the Gelatin Boys. Hey, they said it, not me.

  • ...A Fine Ten-Track Affair.
    author: Drowned in Sound

"What do you think of this band? They don't sound very good. We're trying to have fun tonight, and they don't sound good!". Now that's quite some intro (reminded me of the outro of some Bis song actually, the one that goes "I wanna go home now actually..."). The Gelatin Boys is 'the story of three nice young men trying to forget how to play as hard as they can'. They also claim to be 'the immortal children wanting to see the world through innocent eyes again'. How sweet. They haven't forgotten how to play just yet though and this album doesn't sound very innocent either. First thing that comes to mind with The Gelatin Boys is that they sound like they're having fun. Hence they're not too complicated, the easy listening of punk, so to say. And something tells me they've been trying to record dodgy 70s stylee. Just like...ahem. Nevermind. Let's just not remind ourselves of that! Standout track on here has to be 'What Can You Do', which reminds of The Hives and The 'Pistols in a blender. 'Beware Of The Gelatin Boys' is a fine ten-track affair, crammed with shouty bits (even harmonies at times!) and trashy-sexy-cool guitars. We like that.

I laughed. I cried. They draw you in with raw energy and keep you coming back with unique and intelligent songwriting. Well done.

  • The foundation for total domination.
    author: Under The Volcano

Quirky rock that kinda takes me back to the late 70's and early 80's New York scene. Sometimes punk, sometimes glam, sometimes rock, The Gelatin Boys lay down the foundation for total domination. The music is tight, the production is excellent, the lyrics make sense and you can understand them. If you're into the Minutemen, Sonic Youth, The Flaming Lips and the like, definitely check these boys out.

  • Too wacky for words, but too much fun to pass on.
    author: Bill Ribas

...Suffice it to say, the Gelatin Boys are a quirky, punk progressive outfit that is surprisingly easy to listen to. The disc opens with some banter that sounds like some stoned dolts discussing a band at a bar, and then launches into a punk song along the lines of the Cramps. The next number begins with a funky, ninth-chord guitar rhythm before falling into a loose, jam feel. So they're quirky, erratic. But then you'll hear a cut like "Birthday," a melodic, pining song with acoustic guitar, that sounds damn near folky. By disc's end, I'm not sure how they'd prefer to be labeled, since they close with the Captain and Tenille's "Love Will Keep Us Together." Too wacky for words, but too fun to pass on.
