notes

Since 1995 I've played in the band Gruvis Malt. We have recorded cassette EP's, two disc EP's, and four full length albums. At this time I giving all my hours to music production and composition, engineering other bands' projects on the side. My goal is to release as much music in as wide a pallet as possible before I die. Currently, I'm getting the most enjoyment out of collaborations and pickup projects, and short bursts of touring with the band One Drop.
Playing American rock and roll has been the hardest and best thing I've ever done in my life. I sidestepped college and a solid paycheck in order to give my life to it. The emotional highs and lows of doing this are stressful, but I would rather be living those peaks and valleys than living a straight line.

  • Life’s too short to stay in four/four.

Great album! Nuff said. P.S.: Check out his latest EP "A bullet, a lever, a key" - it's so good!

This album definately changed my mind about hip-hop. The music is complex, well thought out, and definately on another level than 99% of the crap out there. Gavin's lyrics are very intelligent and inspiring. Favorite tracks include Lemon, I'm Not Really A Rapper, and 90 East. Keep it fresh!

  • Best Indie Hip Hop album I've ever heard

Finally, someone records a hip hop album where everything isn't in 4/4. Finally, someone records one where the beats are compositional, with lush string arrangements and talented keyboard playing (this guy the keyboardist for one of my favorite bands, gruvis malt). And Finally, some lyrics that actually say something... not just big willy talk.

  • Fresh, Intelligent, Well Produced

Gavin Castleton's DARK AGE is a great trip through an intelligent man's mind dealing with the emerging difficulties of modern life. American Bottleneck and Lemon are particularly good songs driven by the fuel of expanding the limitations that Hip-Hop has been dwelling in for far to long. Gavin has rawly composed lyrics, great production skills, and an ability to flow from free-form jazz to simple piano/drum based songs. I particularly like the line in 90 East, "I'm not in an emo band, so I can't make whining sound cool."

  • Great, energetic album! I can't stop listening to it...

This album is fabulous - the artist's energy and naked honesty radiates from every song. From the upbeat humor of "I'm not really a rapper..." and "Recuperation II" to the raw anger of "This is not", "90 East" and "The Great American Bottleneck," I enjoyed Gavin Castleton's true dedication to the art of music. The music itself keeps me turning my stereo louder and louder.
