notes
John Gates and Bill Goodell, seasoned coffee-shoppers turned folk-rock duo, met in 2002 at a 4-day Jimmy Messina (Buffalo Springfield, Poco, Loggins & Messina) songwriter performance workshop. Sharing musical backgrounds and tastes, they began playing local showcases and open-mics in the music-rich Santa Barbara area and quickly gained notice and booking in the region. Their original songs are personal, and real, and range from haunting ballads to rollicking tongue-in-cheek novelties. Their shows are distinguished by the amount of richness in harmony and arrangement they accomplish with only two performers. John and Bill have shared the stage with some legendary musicians including Jim Messina, Kenny Edwards, Freebo, Crosby Loggins, Chris Polonus, Kate Wallace and a veritable who's who of local Santa Barbara musicians. They have twice received "honorable mention" awards in the Billboard World Song Contest and the new CD, “Can Life Be So Simple?” is already garnering rave reviews.

Through their lyrics, harmonies and acoustic stylings, Bill Goodell and John Gates weave a rich, textured tapestry of stories and melodies. Gates & Goodell harken back to a time when music had substance and meaning but could also be light-hearted and fun. This CD will take you on a journey, and you'll discover new things each time you listen to it.

West Coast Folk Music at its Best.
author: EmilyCD is superb. If you enjoy folk music, this is one to buy. Some tunes are funny and you'll find yourself singing and bopping along; others are quite moving. Guitar work is especially well done and vocals are great.
