“Falling Awake”, the first song from Gary Jules’ independently released self-titled album, appeared on two separate Billboard ‘Top 100’ charts in January 2007, one week after being heavily featured in an exceptionally popular episode of “Grey’s Anatomy”.

When the editorial staff at Billboard learned that Jules’ sales numbers were generated solely by iTunes downloads with no commercial radio airplay, record company, manager, publicist, publisher, radio or licensing agent to ‘sell’ the new album into the public eye, they wrote a full-page feature detailing Jules’ unlikely rise to recognition with his album “Trading Snakeoil for Wolftickets” (featuring a cover of Tears for Fears’ “Mad World”) and the excitement surrounding the early success of his follow-up, “Gary Jules”.

A live performance of “Falling Awake” on Last Call with Carson Daly on March 21st has sparked a scramble for worldwide physical release and international tour plans, and locked-up opening slots for Tears for Fears this summer.

After years struggling in the nascent Los Angeles underground singer-songwriter scene of the mid-90's, Gary Jules' first record "Greetings from the Side" was recorded for A&M Records and released in August 1998. Weeks later A&M's parent label Polygram was bought by MCA/Universal. Jules and "Greetings" were lost in the proverbial shuffle, but not before both received considerable critical acclaim. Zeke Piestrup of VH-1's show "Fresh" called Jules "The best American singer-songwriter to emerge out of the late '90's -- and the only one worthy of being mentioned in the same sentence with Paul Simon, James Taylor, Cat Stevens and Nick Drake."

In 2001 Jules' original independent release of "Trading Snakeoil for Wolftickets," which included a cover of Tears For Fears' "Mad World" that Jules recorded with friend and producer Michael Andrews for the film "Donnie Darko," arrived to even more critical acclaim. The Village Voice called it "the best album to be released this year, anywhere. Period." Rolling Stone Magazine said "Trading Snakeoil for Wolftickets is at once beautiful and haunting, depressing and inspiring, lonely and welcoming -- delicately crafted folk music of the highest order." In October 2001, Richard Kelly's film "Donnie Darko" came out in theaters and quickly became a cult phenomenon. Not bad for an album created in a basement for less than $100.

In 2002 "Snakeoil" was championed by Nic Harcourt, host of "Morning Becomes Eclectic" at KCRW-FM in Los Angeles, and by Bruce Warren at WXPN-FM in Philadelphia. With these giants of listener-supported radio spreading the word, Jules toured constantly as an independent artist, sharing the stage with Jack Johnson, Damien Rice, Sheryl Crow, Beck, Mason Jennings, Jewel, Jason Mraz, The Polyphonic Spree, Liz Phair, and Todd Rundgren. His year-long residency at the then anonymous Hotel Cafe in Hollywood has become the stuff of legend in the new LA underground.

In the Fall of 2003 the Jules/Andrews version of "Mad World" started receiving major airplay in the UK. One story goes that it was originally played on-air by Robbie Williams during a guest DJ spot. Others say it was Radiohead's Thom Yorke. Either way, Jules and "Snakeoil" were licensed by Adventures/Sanctuary and in December, fueled by a slew of powerful live television performances and tons of old-fashioned word-of-mouth, Gary Jules and Michael Andrews became only the 6th American act ever to win the coveted "Christmas #1."

"Snakeoil" was released in the UK and Europe in early 2004. Jules went gold, then platinum, in fewer than 8 weeks and in several different European territories. "Mad World" was the biggest single of the year.

Jules also played more than 300 live shows from Summer 2003 through August 2004 in the US, Australia, UK and Europe, including a 3-week Summer '04 run with Bob Dylan, from Ireland to Portugal.

In August 2004, Gary and his wife Greta welcomed the birth of their first child.

In 2006 Jules recorded his self-produced, and self-titled album, released it independently with longtime friends CdBaby.com, then left Los Angeles and moved to the mountains of Western North Carolina, where he is building a home studio and making plans for tours of the US, Canada, Australia, and the United Kingdom.

    Heard a short part from Falling Awake on Grey's Anatomy, and I was sold. The voice is what normaly gets to me and Garys just gets to you. Bought the cd next day and it is all together so nice to listne to in cold late fall nights. Wichita has also become a favourite of mine.

    i don't know when i heard a song of gary jules for the first time, but i guess it was on a singer - songwriter festival in vienna and the song was "no poetry". since then i 'm a big fan of his words. i used to hitchhike a lot through alaska and the west coast of canada and his music always fitted perfect to my mood on the streets up there. he is, besides bob dylan, steven sufjan and neil young one of the best voices for everyone who spends a lot of time on the streets travelling, ramblin' and driftin... thanks on this way...

    Absolutely brilliant CD, and brilliant service from CD Baby too.. I was a bit sceptical when I realised I had to import this CD, I'd been waiting for it pretty much ever since I got Trading Snakeoil for Wolftickets (I'm torn between that and this album for a favourite now!), but I thought never mind, I'll pay whatever to get this.. but turns out it cost me about the same price as a CD over here (UK) is anyway, even with delivery included, which was very speedy! thank you!!

    This CD has some of the finest acoustic songs I've heard in a long time. Many moments call to mind early Paul Simon and Nick Drake, and yes, Elliot Smith, but ultimately the voice and writing are distinctly his own. The minimal acoustic instrumentation and production serve his voice and the songs well. Hard to pick a favorite, but it might be Witchita. Whiskey for Everybody is heartbreakingly beautiful. Seriously, every track on this disc is great. If you enjoy quality writing, singing and playing, this is where to find it!

I picked up "Trading Snakeoil" when it came out and was pleasantly surprised to find an album full of great originals as well as the "Tears for Fears" tune. When "Falling Awake" came on Grey's Anatomy I immediately recognized that Nick Drake-ish voice and searched out this album. Once again, a great find.     I just loved it. I had been enchanted with "Trading...", bought this one right after hearing "Falling awake". Real high pleasure, for the melodies as well as for the lyrics. "I'm just a young man" as Gary says, but great songs though. As for the girl part, I was playing this CD for going to work. Lovely for driving softly. I drove a girl home the same evening, the CD was in the player. She absolutely loved it. I think I got points with her. :D

    Falling Awake was one of the background songs in one of the most powerful episodes of Grey's Anatomy to date. I didn't recognize it or the artist, so I searched the shows database and found the artist was Gary Jules. I bought the CD for the one song, but after listening to the entire volume feel it is one of the best folk/rock genre albums and artist of the decade. This will be a tough album for Jules to top and I am looking forward to his next one. This is a must have. Also,CD Baby had the best price around and their customer service is second to none.

    I have a habit of buying mystery CDs at the 99-cent store near my house, which is how I ended up with Greetings From the Side a couple of years ago. I've been a Gary Jules fan ever since. His latest CD is about what I expected -- absolutely awesome! An artist and musician of this caliber deserves much more recognition than Gary has received to date. Maybe this one will put him over the top. If not, at least I'm one of the ones lucky enough to know the secret.

    I was watching Grey's Anatomy and heard "falling awake" turnd to my husband and said, "I LOVE THIS SONG. It sounds like the guy who sings Mad Mad World. I HAVE to get this cd!!" Well it turns out it IS the guy who sings Mad Mad World!! I LOVE THE WHOLE CD!! My kids love it too!!!! They think it sounds like our Curious George cd (Jack Johnson).     I had never heard of Gary Jules until Falling Awake was played on "Grey's Anatomy." Immediately I googled to see where I could find his work, which led me here. Like many here, he reminds me of Cat Stevens (his early years.) All of the songs are equally good and the quality of the CD is excellent. I bought one for myself and one for my sister.

    I wasn't sure if Gary Jules' new cd could beat his last but I think he did it! It's really great. If you are a fan at all of acoustic music this a must buy. The first song and track 7 are awesome. It's sounds really, I don't know if this is the word but, theatrical like you would hear it a really cool movie. What an excellent, inspiring musician.

    A great CD, I have it in the car and it makes driving, which I normally hate, really worthwhile. Beautiful voice for a man and almost takes me back to the singer/songwriter days of the 60’s. Cant wait for his next album, can anything get better than this though?

    Gary, your music just gets better and better and you have yet again produced an Album that touches the soul. Songs with such REAL FEELING. For ultimate effect, listen to this album with the lights low and dont let anything disturb you for at least THREE hours as you will need to play it over and over cause you just cant get enough. In Summary.. a fantastic fusion of acoustic sounds and soul penetrating vocals which pours out feeling and energy. AWESOME.....

    I saw Gary live in Philly, and it was one of the most memorable events. After shaking his hand an having him sign the CD cover, I listened to it in my car on the way home and it hasn't come out since. The music is fantastic, no matter what mood I am in, it makes me feel happy. This is my favorite CD of any that I own.

    I haven't been able to take this one out of my car CD player. I have been getting a dose every morning and night for about two weeks straight now. About 5 of the songs are really awesome. Some songs have to grow on you a little, but trust me they will. Soothing and genuinely uplifting at the same time. It's genius.

    While it took a little work to locate the CD, it was well worth the effort. I couldn't wait to see Gary live (though that is a definite goal), but this is the next best thing. The songs are thoughtful, intelligent and immaculately performed. Kudos and already looking forward to the next one.

    On "Gary Jules", acoustic guitars and folk-driven soundscapes are set against urban lyrics of love and loss from an intelligent perspective. Listening to the CD, one is no longer in their car or their living room but in a small venue filled with the smells of cigarette smoke, an old bar and a floor worn from decades of use. Jules' music creates the environment of an intimate concert venue through the absence of an overly studioed sound. Clearly this is a professional recording, but Jules' talents and style make it feel as if it's a private concert.

    I adore this cd--absolutely adore it. The mellow sounds provide a nice soundtrack to daily life around the house as I take care of my baby girl. The only downside to the cd is that the lyrics often don't make sense, as though the rhyme is more important than creating some kind of coherent thought. I look forward to more music by mr. jules, I'll certianly buy more cd's. I just hope he works on his lyrics!

Whenever I talk about Gary's music to people who haven't heard of him, I always say - "just listen - it's absolute poetry," and this CD is exactly that. Fantastic lyrics, great guitar work, and brilliantly moving songwriting. The effort was well worth the wait - thanks to Gary for continuing to make such incredible music.

    I'm a Matt Costa, Jack Johnson, Ben Harper kind of girl so when I saw that Gary had a new cd out I knew that more than likely I was going to like it. I wasn't wrong. From the first to the last track it's brilliant. He doesn't get the credit he deserves. When there are so many artists today who are "faking" it in L.A., and there are muscians like Gary Jules who are still trying to make their music heard, something is wrong.

His songs remind me of better days and lessons learned everything meaningful in this world. This is the only artist that has really ever grasped my attention in full. i agree with the statement I've heard that he seems like a modern day mellow Cat Stevens...deffinetly one of the singers and song writers since that era. Can't wait to see him in concert again.

    I've been checking here for weeks waiting for this record and without a single listen to any tracks it's ordered and on it's way....Basically don't need to hear it first because I know it's going to be that kind of gives you the shivers stuff!!
