notes
Amanda Garrigues was born in the southern college town of Gainesville, Florida. In the music that she writes and performs, she pays tribute to the themes of home, independence and the human condition.
From the time she was a young girl, Amanda absorbed her love of music through her father, an accomplished guitarist who played campfire songs to her while she sang along. Her family attended church every Sunday, where the traditional hymns of the church choir she sang in further inspired her to want to create and perform her own music.
While a student at the University of Florida, she acted as singer/frontwoman for progressive folk band, Big Shoals Tract and quickly established herself as one of the most popular and endearing women in the Gainesville music scene. During her time in Big Shoals Tract, Amanda met Lynda Stipe and her band, the eclectic Athens, Georgia-based, Hetch-Hetchy, whom she briefly toured with as a back-up singer. When BST disbanded, she decided it was time to focus more on her own songwriting and guitar playing.
Amanda's debut CD Spirit Act was released in the Fall of 1998. Since that time, she has toured the Southeast consistently, sharing the stage with such artists like Jonatha Brooke, Iris Dement and Danielle Howle. She has also been invited to showcase at Nashville's NEA Extravaganza, the Atlantis Music Conference, NEMO in Boston and the Rockrgrl Music Conference in Seattle. In her spare time, Amanda also writes a monthly article for Womanrock.com.
Amanda is one of those rare artists who speaks to you in a voice that gives compassion and registers pain. Whether you are listening to Amanda from the comfort of your couch or from the back of a smoke-filled club, you know immediately that you are the recipient of a gift.

author: ken lawrenceamanda came to my atention when her name appeared in one of the "other cds you'll like under another artest's name on cd baby. well listen to the songs your country and truth, you'll find that this is the music mainstream alt rock radio is afraid of because it's true music not plastic like greenday
awesome, breaking through, don't miss it!!
author: ChemboyThis Cd Rocks ! I came across amanda surfing for new music one night..I heard 'Misunderstood' and I was instantly hooked. i won't beg you to buy the CD..but you don't know what you're missing..She's followed it up with 'Groundswell' which might i add is equally powerful and for some annoying reason, i can't get her voice out of my head. if you've been looking for good music, look no further, you've found it !
amanda's first time out is thought-provoking and entertaining
author: Sarah JonesSpirit Act is a gift. The band rocks, but it is her voice that gives you pause. The strength and depth of her lyrics and delivery have made this CD a mainstay of my collection. Her next one (in production right now March/2000) will be equally as effective in giving the listener a reason to go back for more.
This is a promising album
author: Jesikah Nielseni loved this cd, and i think amanda has incredible talent as an indie artist and i hope that oneday she will make it mainstream. Truth is an eccelent song and her lyrics are powerful and heartfelt. i'm looking forward to her next cd and concerts! -*jes*
Amanda Stands Out - Review of "Spirit Act"
author: Ink 19It is becoming harder and harder for a talented singer/songwriter to stand out from the sea of mediocrity that has poured out of CD pressing plants in the last four years. Garrigues does so easily, with an engaging voice, touching lyrics and original arrangements. The opening "Truth" easily trumps any single by the crop of "independent-yet-vulnerable" females that dominates radio these days. The other four tracks on here are equally strong; Garrigues' talents are unquestionable, and hopefully someone will pick up on this soon and sweep those weak sirens off the charts.
Intense vocals, pounding rythm, Spirit Act is a must have CD
author: Bonnie FowksAmanda Garrigues is an talented young artist with an incredible voice. Her lyrics and melody will keep you mesmerized. With talent like hers, she's not one you can afford to miss.
