notes
Reeves Gabrels is a Grammy-nominated guitarist/songwriter/producer and computer jockey probably best known for both his work with David Bowie and his aggressive guitar style that combines the visceral energy of rock, the harmonic sophistication of jazz, the emotional honesty of blues and country, and an ear for the unusual. From post/industrial/techno of Nine Inch Nails to the commercial pop sounds of Natalie Umbruglia, Reeves is the epitome of musical ingenuity.
Gabrels spent the nineties as guitarist/producer/songwriter with David Bowie, as well as working with a diverse roster of artists including The Cure, The Rolling Stones and Public Enemy. The year 2000 witnessed Reeves harness his extraordinary talent to new heights with the creation of his second solo full-length album ULYSSES (della notte). The nine-track CD is testament to Gabrels' limitless style of songwriting and guitar playing, both of which are clearly captured on this brilliant recording.
After a successful online release (over 5000 copies sold via digital download), of a scaled down version ULYSSES (della notte) through the Reeves Gabrels website, E-Magine Entertainment decided to release the second solo album from the groundbreaking guitar virtuoso. Also, Reeves is a longtime friend and colleague of Christoph Rücker, co-president of E- Magine Entertainment. Rücker states, "I've known Reeves since Bowie... we have a lot in common about the arts, we have always kept in touch, and when I started E-Magine, [considering the strong internet angle] it made sense to put out Reeves' album. Reeves and I discussed adding tracks, for the commercial release, we wanted to add something even more special."
Reeves' new album is a rich with musical gems including "Jewel," a special track that combines joint-vocal-efforts of Frank Black (The Pixies), Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters) and David Bowie. "Yesterday's Gone" is a spectacular ballad that showcases the dreamy collaboration between Reeves and Robert Smith of The Cure.
ULYSSES (della notte) features the genre stretching trademark guitar playing for which Reeves is known, as well as a collection of finely crafted songs. All nine songs feature Gabrels on vocals as well as guest appearances by a few talented friends. Fans of solid songwriting and singing will not be disappointed by this nine song epic journey; neither will fans of the electric guitar.
"There hasn't been a collection of guitar sounds this inventive, extreme, creepy and cool on a rock album since Hendrix died," --Ted Drozdowski- Boston Phoenix
