Frank McComb
Biography

Frank McComb is a divine soul man who speaks with the native tongue of blues, jazz, gospel, pop and some hip hop. His virtuoso piano and organ work have made him not only an indispensable and highly sought after session musician, but an underground favorite on the soul and jazz scenes. He has recorded or performed with many of music's giants including: Frankie Beverly and Maze, Teena Marie, Chaka Khan, Lalah Hathaway, Terri Lynn Carrington, Phyllis Hyman and Teddy Pendegrass. He has also done double duty music directing starting his career with Gerald Levert's Rude Boys (Written All Over Your Face) and most recently with Pop Diva, Anastacia.

It was Frank's performance with Prince, the NAACP's Lifetime Achievement Award Winner on the 2005 telecast that thrust Frank back onto a world-stage. This night served as an introduction for some, but a re-emergence for many fans who've never seen one of their favorites live.

Holding down his first jazz trio at 17, Frank McComb has been a music master since he first tickled the ivories at age 12 under the tutelage of an aunt. Frank counts Herbie Hancock and Oscar Peterson as musical heroes. After one listen you can also throw Stevie Wonder, Donny Hathaway and Chick Corea into the potpourri of influences heard through Frank's various bodies of work.

The world got a taste of his genius on wax and on the road when young lion Branford Marsalis laid down his seminal Hip Hop Jazz recording Buckshot LeFonque which featured DJ Premier and Maya Angelou alongside his legendary ensemble of sidemen and artists. On the release of Buckshot LeFonque's second recording "Music Evolution" Frank handled the vocals on a hit called "Another Day".

It was after a false start at Mojazz (Motown's Jazz Label) where an album was recorded, but never saw the streets that Frank hooked up with Branford Marsalis which after time spent led to a recording deal with Columbia Jazz. Columbia's indecision on marketing Frank's very personal recording "Love Stories" led to the end of very short road with Columbia.

Frank has however defied all efforts to shut him down by remaining an active fixture on the live music scene performing around the world from London to Japan. Frank is confronted by fans everywhere who can't get the music and are left to purchase bootlegs off the Black Market or even Ebay.

Frank has now (like many) gone the way of an independent warrior. After the exclusive European and Japanese release of his album "The Truth" which partnered him with producer Steve Harvey (Donnie's Welcome to the Colored Section) and showcased music legends Billy Preston, Paulinho DaCosta alongside Bay area favorite Ledisi; Frank culled together finished recordings from his vault has pressed and packaged them for the masses, worldwide.

Frank's current opus, "Straight From The Vault" is a rich blend of soul, jazz and pop music that tells stories and speaks to the heart of men and women everywhere. "The Things You Do" is a beautiful composition dedicated to women everywhere who do it all for family and husband while remaining fresh and vibrant. "Still Has A Hold On Me" tells the story of man who let love slip through his hands because he didn't express how he felt. Instrumental tracks are among the milieu of beautiful music also found in Frank's Vault. Frank has now poised him self and his music to keep rising to the top.

just hearing these sound bytes,I'm blown away by the level of groove & originality(even though many call McComb derivative of Stevie, but so what? He's got the "stuff",brother-and personally,I love the message). The instrumental "King Of The Open Road" blew me away!!

  • This man is the truth!!!
    author: staci cash

I found myself stressed and going through unnecessary changes and one day a friend told me about Frank McComb. I pulled up his page and I have been in love with his music ever since. His soulful sound has relieved me of all my stress and anxiety. I am in the process of completing my Frank McComb collection. I anticipate the delivery of his cd to my mailbox. The funny thing is he is all I listen to all day, everyday. So far my most favorite song from this cd is "It Was You" that is going to have to be my wedding song when and if I ever get married...lol If I had it my way he would receive 10 stars!!!

  • Essence man of soul!
    author: Kilolo

I'm a writer and I'm at a lost of words to describe Frank McComb's music but I'll try. Phenomenal! I'm listening to one of his songs "Still Has A Hold On Me" as I'm typing this review. Frank 's voice is so soothing to one's soul. I can feel what he's singing. His voice is full of depth and sincerity in addition to substance. His piano playing is outstanding! Thank you Frank for giving me something special to listen to when I listen to you. I missed Donny Hathaway's sound and you have bought back that essence in your own way. "I'd Be A Fool" if I did buy any more of your music for my collection. You are truly a gift!

  • OH MY GOD! This is Donny Hathaway reincarnated!
    author: Candy

OH MY GOD, when I first heard/saw Frank on BETJ List, I missed what his name was, but the song he sang live, "Left Alone" got my attention real quick. So quick, that I had to wait for it to come back on later that night so I'd know what his name was and explore for available CDs. Needless to say, when I went to his website, I let the snippets play ALL DAY long, I just couldn't get enough until I got the full CDs in the mail. I then explored further to purchase them, and I think I got all of them that were available. Such good music should be shared and deserves MUCH ATTENTION! I know most artists want to have their own sound, but when I heard him, if I didn't look, it sounded just like Donny Hathaway, and I love Donny Hathaway. Frank McComb has a timeless sound that will endure the test of time and changes in the sound of music that we hear. Everything he sings is so genuine, so classic, and so real--THIS IS WHAT WE'RE MISSING IN TODAY'S MUSIC! Frank, you are a real go-getter, I can't wait for the next project. Until then, I will keep looking for that WHITE LINE IN THE SKY!

  • Excellent, Superb, very enjoyable listening

I have truely enjoyed the music found on this CD. From start to finish, the style of music, has that Jazzy, yet R&B background. I fell in love with the sound and with the artists voice. I love music and I am very happy to have this as part of my MUSICAL COLLECTION. I plan to purchase more and tell FAMILY AND FRIENDS all about F. McCombs.

  • Words can't really describe or can accurately convey the feeling...
    author: Don Richardson

Words can't really describe or can accurately convey the feeling that your music has on me. It is like when I first heard Stevie Wonder or Prince. It is like when you hear a song and attach the song to a particular moment or event in your life. I am a musician and I can hear EVERYTHING that you are trying to say Brother McComb. It is simply the some of the best music that I have every heard and I have heard alot. Your music speaks to me and it gives off a very positive, deeep, even spiritual vibe. Snap your fingers, tell us to jump and we other musicians will have to say how high... All hail to King Frank who has brought back musicianship and musical creativity, skill and talent and blended them into timeless recordings that my great-grand children and their children will cherish. We owe you a great debt.

  • Definitely one that got away! Awesome album of timeless songs.
author: Mike Parlett (Sax player/Radio presenter)

This is definitely one that got away as far as a major label deal is concerned. You guys missed out! Frank's self released album is a real work of vocal mastery. Hear Frank regularly featured on my Radio Show. www.solarradio.com Monday night/Tuesday 12-2am GMT

  • As good as it gets
    author: Mike d'Amsterdam

Ever since I saw Frank in the mid nineties with Buckshot LeFonque at the North Sea Jazz Festival I've been a huge fan. I own all of Franks recordings and I was fortunate enuff to be part of 2 live concerts in Paradiso in Amsterdam. This CD again is a wonderful, musical and soulful masterpiece. It is sad however to see, that Frank has to be operating from the Indies side of things.... I am always amazed by the fact that so many talented and brilliant musicians have to find their way through CD Baby. Then again - for those who have found their way to CD Baby -it is a blessing to be able to buy great CD's likes Franks. Keep up the good work Frank - we're wit ya !

    author: Jamica

it was a very nice cd... Really smooth....nice voice....and the keys are excellent....keep it going man!

  • Splendid CD-Soul Stirring!!!
    author: freedom clay

Frank McComb is a musician's musician without question. He is one of the best, under-recognized vocalists of our time with a reverberating interpretation of song. If you love Donny Hathaway...then you will definitely like Frank;-)

  • Carrying the torch after Hathaway
    author: bodaciouscowboy

This is a great piece of work featuring INCREDIBLE vocals and playing. But also remarkably good drum programming, and I'm a drummer. Not only are the programmed parts realistic, they are consistently full of creative ideas comparable or better than the vocabulary often mined by drummers. It sounds like a tight band full of cats pushing the envelope. Yet it's all ONE cat! Heaps of talent.

  • Music lover need to wake up and hear this cd!
    author: Stephen Wayne Todd

This is chalk full of killer songs! vocals never sounded better. arrangements, and production are very good.

  • Frank McComb at his best
    author: Mark Gentry

I know this CD has been around for a while but am I glad I got to hear this!! This has got to be Frank's best CD by far, not that his others haven't been anything less than brilliant. This is a classy CD that just oozes soul. All the tracks on this CD are fantastic, but the best track for me is "The Things That You Do". You can't go wrong with music of this calibre and if you haven't got this CD yet get it before they all go. Take a listen and you will see how good it is. A fine addition to my collection...nice one Frank :-)

    author: samuel morgan

Listen run and do not walk, go get this cd period. This cd has the sounds and the same vibes of a Kem, with the added sound of smooth jazz, with some neo soul. The band is tight also. MY favorite track is 6. All i can say is if this cd was on a major label, it would be on haevy rotation. The cd is xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxcellent period. I want all his cds.

  • Music with integrity
    author: Andrea

Alas! music that soothes and feeds the soul. Straight From the Vault supercedes genre, no lover of music could deny it's authenticity. In an era of cookie cutter artists and artificial music, Straight From the Vault will be a welcomed surprise! The vocals and music are equally phenomenol, and every track enjoyable. This is undeniably a MUST HAVE!

  • A real oasis amongst a sea of stars.
    author: Steve Wilson

If you like Jazz and soul all mixed together this is where its at. If you aint heard of Frank Mccomb then youve been missing a lot. In fact too many people have as Frank has for numerous reasons had a few problems gettings his albums released in ther US. This latest offering shows all that is the magic of McComb.Wondeful jazzy chops on the keyboard allied to some awesome lyrical soulful ballads of stellar quality. If you only buy one CD this year. BUY THIS ONE.

  • Distinctly Unique
    author: Sandra

Too often we buy CD's only to hear 2 or 3 good songs on it and the rest is below average. This can be further from the truth when listening to this jewel of a masterpiece. What can be described as only a God given talent, Frank McComb's voice makes the hair stand-up on your skin and relaxes you at the same time. His soulful sound is rare, given the abundance of new, no-talent singers out there. Rest assure, this CD won't remain in the "Vault" for very long. A true winner!!

    author: Catherine

This C.D. touches the heart, mind and soul.

  • Play it again and again and again Frank
    author: Jonathan

How could you give this offering less than 5 stars. From the mans incredible abilities as a musician, musical composition, lyrical honesty and sweet character filled vocals is it any wonder he's been likened to Stevie and Donny.Every track has an emotional investment that reinforces Franks dedication to his music. I have not tired in the slightest of this album and each new listening brings to light something new and interesting that I hadn't noticed before. To any aspiring artist, take note, this is music as it should be made

  • A must have!
    author: JoyInsideMyTears

Once again, Frank brings his unique and uncompromising style to this masterpiece. Each song, ranging from spiritual to romantic subjects, allows you to "experience" his music. The emotional content and delivery evokes unwavering and genuine sincerity. The lyrics move me- sometimes to smiles and laughter and other times, nearly to tears. This CD deserves its' #1 spot on CD Baby.

  • GREAT!!!

  • A mainstay in my cd changer.....
    author: Tawana

This is a cd I listen to every single day. I have never tired of hearing it. I hear it each time as if hearing it for the very first time. Lyrically there are some very moving pieces for me like, The Thing I Failed To Do, Each Day, White Line In The Sky and It Was You. If you've supported his other projects, this is simply the evolution of what he does best. By far one of my favorite cd's of this year. You will not be disappointed!

  • Another great Frank McComb Album
    author: SoulTracks

From the first notes of the opening song, "White Line in the Sky," it is clear that this is another fine disc that McComb's rabidly loyal fan base will eat up. As on McComb's first two albums, "Vault" serves up a number of tasty mid- and uptempo smooth soul/jazz vocal numbers, the best of which are "Still Has a Hold On Me" and "The Things That You Do." However, it also boasts three fine instrumental numbers fronted by McComb's keyboard work: the funky "To the Left," "King of the Open Road," and my favorite, the smooth George Duke-like "Morning Glory" (there's also a short instrumental bonus at the end of the disc, "A Good Past...A Better Future)." Some of McComb's most notable cuts in the past have been his occasional slow songs, and Vault includes three fine piano laden ballads, "The Thing I Failed To Do," the jazzy "It Was You," and the lyrically moving "Left Alone." It is, start to finish, another excellent performance by this talented, underrated artist. To see entire review, visit http://www.soultracks.com/frank_mccomb.htm

  • Maybe the best of all his records
    author: Scott Woods

If you're into McComb's music at all then you'll likely find this record the best of the ones that can actually be had. More in the vein of his first album, "Love Stories", this one really notches up the production (a shift from his jazzier second release) and the music wins for it. Of the artists vying for contention as the next Stevie Wonder (Glenn Lewis, Musiq Soulchild, etc.), McComb is the one that actually has the catalogue and chops to back up the claim. An excellent record by an astounding artist.

  • ABSOLUTE GENIUS!
    author: Monificent

Frank has done it again!! Man, from beginning to the end you can't help but be caught up in this beautiful journey listening first to his musicianship, then you hear that blessed voice and it's OVER! • Excellent CD...one of the best!
    author: Resey

Frank McComb is an extremely well rounded musician. This CD may be as close to perfection as far as CD's are concerned. Frank's vocals are heavenly, his lyrics personal and real. "White Line In The Sky," the opening cut, is a fantastic and uplifting song that leaves you wanting more. It is simply harmonic bliss! The beautiful and haunting "It Was You" is music at its finest. While the lyrics and vocals are amazing, the instrumentation perfectly supports the content. The inspirational "Each Day" will have you swaying, singing along and believing that there it will be all over in the morning. This CD proves that Frank is clearly a multi-talented musician. While his voice may be compared to both Donny Hathaway and Stevie Wonder, it is clear that he has the chops that separate him and place him into his own spotlight. Like Donny and Stevie, Frank will one day be a legend in his own right. Buy this CD! You will have absolutely no regrets!!!
