notes

Guitarist Jim Fox brings to the table a combination of rich and varied musical experiences. A graduate of The Berklee College of Music, he has been an active studio musician in Hollywood, California, playing on numerous records, movies, television shows, and commercials. He has accompanied and/or recorded with such artists as Rosemary Clooney, Frank Sinatra, Jr., Sammy Davis, Jr., Michael Feinstein, Steve Lawrence, Tony Bennett, Barry Manilow, The Temptations, and many many more. Some of the movies include "La Bamba," "What Women Want," "The Presidio," "Beaches," and "Raising Helen." His unique style is based on a blend of solid time, strong melody, and harmonic interest.
The liner notes were written by Frank Sinatra, Jr., who states, "Listen to the subtle influence of a very gentle swing feel that Jim includes at different points during each selection. At the same time, there is ever present a constant blending of playing styles and imaginative harmonies in every phrase. This is the mark of Jim's detailed, but very romantic approach to the music he makes whenever he plays solo..." "I hope that you may find the same wonder that I have always felt in his mastery of the creation of his music.
This album is true artistry!"

Sunburst is a wonderful gift for the guitar minded music lover, particularly one drawn to jazz. I hear the influence of such greats as Barney Kessel, Joe Pass, and others on this CD, but it is Jim’s own impeccable mastery that has woven these together with unique warmth, style and fun-filled drive. My wife loves Celine Dion, and Jim’s rendition of “All the Way” reminds me of Celine’s version that resurrected Frank Sinatra in duet. While I love ALL the tracks, a favorite gem is “The Man Who Was Magic” which departs from the steady, rhythmic drive and invites the listener to a meditative space. Jim says this piece was written for a movie that was never made... based on a book of the same name by Paul Gallico. (Having lived abroad myself for many years, I guess I identify with this story idea!) Thankfully, this piece has been recorded, and Jim’s composition skills illuminate Sunburst. Highly recommended!!

To me is simply a great guitar music cd

  • A "must" for fans of solo guitar!
    author: Soybean

From the cover with it's beautiful archtop guitar, to the selection of some of the greatest tunes ever written, this CD upholds and extends the tradition of the art of solo guitar playing. The arrangements are varied and unusual. "Cry Me a River" is given new life with a cool samba rhythm. "Come Rain…" is a great example of relaxed swinging guitar, and the harmonization is just wonderful. Special mention must be made about the sound. It's one of the most natural, acoustic guitar recordings i've ever heard. You just feel like you're in the room. But then, what would you expect with veteran engineer Al Schmidt at the helm?

  • Jim is a complete master of his intrument, and a pleasure to listen to.

As a fellow guitarist I enjoy listening to other guitarist who really have there stuff together. On Jim Fox's album Sunburst he shows he's got it all together. J.B.Mitchell of Mitchell/Mcrae smooth jazz duo.
