notes

If you can believe that music at its core is an honest art, rooted in life stories that have the ability to transcend generations in order to tell tales that connect to the heart of people, then listen to us. All bands write their own bios, so instead of writing to you in lofty third person phrases I’d rather tell you who we are, where we come from and where we’re going. I want you to feel me. I want to reach straight down your throat and make your heart beat. How FLOREZ ever became possible is a small miracle alone. I began playing music when I discovered one of the only possessions my absent father left behind, a classical guitar. My 8-year-old hands could barely fit around its neck, but my mother fought relentlessly to convince an instructor to give me lessons. Although I learned a few chords, my first real lessons took place by myself in the quiet of my room as I devoured the music of Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughn, and Pearl Jam. I still use that same guitar, “bella,” to tell the story of my life, and my relationships with both God and man.
FLOREZ hails from Nashville, TN and consists of myself Alex Florez (lead vocal, guitar), Dana Brewster (guitar), Erik Huffman (bass, vocal), Dusty Emerick (keys, banjo, harmonica, vocal) and Josh Robinson (drums, vocal). Dusty is the handyman with the stylish mop on his head. Dana is intense, driven, incredibly stable and at the same time totally out of his mind. Erik’s a bassist, his father was a bassist, and his mom’s father was a bassist. And finally there’s Josh, the baby of the band: first drumsticks at age 2 and killin it at 6. We are a family. We live together, play together, and watch each other’s backs. We are ever developing, and ever pushing both ourselves and our music. Our hopes are to not only bring a fresh voice to music, but bring songs that connect to the heart of people by confronting real life and real questions.

  • Great, honest, cross-genre album
    author: Jeremiah Sain

I got this cd over a year ago at a Florez concert at my school, UNCG. Didn't pay it a lot of mind, but enjoyed it when it came on iTunes via shuffle. The past 6 months I've been listening to it non-stop. All the songs have great catchy hooks. On the surface it just seems like a pool side album to enjoy during the summer at parties and it does work in that atmosphere, very well. Sitting down and absorbing the album reveals many different layers of honesty and openness that is really lacking in any popular music today. It is a mostly upbeat album with a lot of Spanish influence. The musicianship here would be great for any seasoned band, but to be as young as they are this aspect really stands out. In summation, what seems to be just another pop/rock album reveals itself to be much more with repeated listens.
