  • Amazingly beautiful, a bit over produced.
    author: The Sire

If you are looking for that sound that will make you feel... something, go no further. I first heard Fisher when looking for the Great Expectations sound track (it has an amazing song by Chris Cornell). I "found" this CD when looking for a CD by Cornell's brother Peter (black market radio). Here ends the Cornell connection. About this CD (or CDs to be exact): The songs are all hauntingly beautiful. I am a Fisher fan, but her voice never ceases to amaze and move me. The first CD has some nice tunes to it with Oblivious being the most notable. The second CD is my favourite, and has both February 1994 and Miss Kathleen and is overall more touching and emotional. Although I generally don't like pop, thess CDs brings some stronger emotions I found only in grunge songs. Some of the songs are over-done and lack some natural feel, but overall the production is neat and professional and the music is "made with love".

  • Love the Uppers and the Downers
    author: Amy M

First heard Dream On from the show Windfall and went on a hunt to find the artist. Boy am I glad I decided to pick up the CD on cdbaby instead of just 1 song. I still haven't made it off of the Uppers CD, but every song is a winner!

  • Beautiful voice, fun pop
    author: sarah b.

Beautiful voice! First CD is fun catchy pop, second cd mellow and beautiful. I love that they are separated like this so you can just pop in the cd you're in the mood for. I first heard Fisher on the "Great Expectations" soundtrack (great song "Breakable"). I'll probably buy thier new one too.

  • Fisher is fantastic!
    author: www.GreatIndieMusic.com

Cd is very well done. Keep up the good work!

  • absolutely phenomenal CD! I still haven't made it to disk 2!
    author: Kevin D.

Wow! There is not a bad track on disk 1. I really can't comment on the Downers disk yet as I haven't made it that far. I can't seem to get the first one out of my CD player! Kathy has such a beautiful, sexy voice. It's almost hypnotic at times. I still can't believe I stumbled onto this CD at an MP3 download site for independent artists. Of course, I HAD to have the songs so I paid for the downloads. I've been listening to them for about 6 months and thought I'd like to have the actual CD. The improvement in sound quality between the MP3 version and the CD made it worth the price by itself. While I was at it, I ordered a copy for my sister. I hope she enjoys it as much as I have. I can't think of ANY cd where I've ever bought 3 copies. That's how much this CD impressed me. Take a listen, it's just beautiful.

  • Every song is AMAZING!!!
    author: Iliff

Fist I wanted to say that I rarely like CDs that much that are put together in this format... one CD of fast songs, and one of slow. The main thing they seem to lack is balance. But having said that, Fisher's Uppers and Downers changed my mind. Each song on BOTH of these CDs is INCREDIBLE!!! Both of these CDs could easily stand up on it's own if they put them out seperately. The songs are catchy, well written, and Fisher is SO GOOD at stirring up the emotions, especially on Downers. Uppers has tons of songs that completely ROCK, and they do an amazing version of Aerosmith's Dream On that really compliments the original. Check out this CD everyone! You won't be disappointed!

  • What a great CD!
    author: Krista Beran

I bought this CD for Obviously. Boy am I glad I did. What a great 2-CD set! There are some really great songs on this CD! Different Kind of Wonderful is fantastic...and what a wonderful remake of L-O-V-E! I also love Miss Ophelia! Great CD set!

  • Great new music for me!
    author: Scott

Upper & Downers is fun and moving. It is always good to buy a recording and find value in all songs. The music is unique. Absolutely no regrets in this purchase. Fisher is now one of my favorite music choices.

  • Keeps on impressing me!
    author: Leah Crist

I bought this after listening to the Early Years because I had to have more. Both CD's are fabulous! Such stirring lyrics, some fun and some soulful. Every song begs you to sing along. Hasn't left my CD player except to turn other people on to this music and artist. Thanks!

  • Thanks
    author: Melanie

Thanks for the great music Fisher...outstanding!

  • FISHER IS AMAZING!
    author: Bethany

I have been a Fisher fan for over 5 years now, so I'm not sure why it has taken me so long to pick up this CD. There is something about Fisher that sets them apart from most other bands. Whatever it is, I was instantly a fan and have not looked back since. Kathy's voice is chillingly beautiful. She can give a song an edge that I have yet to hear from any other artist. The 2 disk dynamic of the uppers and downers is an awesome combination. I can't wait until Fisher tours the NE of the US of A!

  • loved it... must listen
    author: fe

Loved this one just as much as their latest. Although again there was one i liked a different version. After hearing one version of missing it over took I will love you as my favourite fisher song, but this version of missing doesnt do the song justice. The one i heard on their website before it was redesigned is faster, and generally better. But this version is by no means bad... i dont think fisher know the meaning of the word =))

  • My sister loved it
    author: Jason Freidenfelds

I got this for my sister's birthday because she loved a track from it she had heard on the radio. Great stuff!

  • This is CD is what I needed to add to my collection!!

This CD is a beautiful and great. I really needed it to add to my CD collection and I'm glad I went with this CD. Thanks a lot!!!

  • Wow!
    author: Frank

Uppers and Downers is my first Fisher CD. It has blown me away! Never heard a voice so beautiful and delightful. Uppers gets me going on the long commute to work in the morning, and Downers mellows me out for the ride home. I'm definately adding more Fisher CDs to my collection.

  • love, life and why

This Album has the music. It has Shades of Dido And Sarah McLachlan and if i needed to i would buy more than one copy. The title is well thought out for both cd1 and cd2. Fisher has a grait album here one that should br released worldwide.

This is the first Fisher CD I have gotten and it's great! Great vocals and awesome piano.

  • Buy it! Buy it now!
    author: Roon

Spearheaded by an amazing voice, this double-CD does not disappoint. The CD proves that this is a band that cares a great deal about quality instead of quantity, though with 23 tracks I doubt anyone will be complaining in that regard either. This is a must have. Simply brilliant.

  • FABULOUS CD!!! I love everything about Fisher and this CD is a perfect example.
    author: Bethany Tiesman

Uppers and Downers has everything I dig! It is a perfect combination of upbeat rhythms and sensual moodiness!!! It is great!!! Love it!!!

  • Fantastic!
    author: Bill

When I first heard the Toyota commercial "Beautiful Life" I had to know more about the artist. I tracked them down and immediately bought this CD. I have played it every day since it arrived. It is great! I have just one question: why is the second disc called Downers when listening to it makes me feel so good?

  • This CD is awesome, I am so excited by it.
    author: Emilie

I really enjoy this cd set. I love listening to it and I want to choreograph to it for a ministry show that my college does. The music and the lyrics are so thought provoking and beautiful. It makes me smile and the music makes me feel beautiful and inspired to do something creative!

The cds are very complementary, and they're great to listen to straight through as well as choosing selected tracks. I love the vocal layering (not a technical term) and didn't take "downers" from my cdplayer for an entire 4 hour car ride in the rain...favorite tracks are Rianna and Miss Ophelia

  • really enjoy

    author: CelticLass

Never heard of Fisher before, and ordered from a recommendation on the site. OUTSTANDING. Really! I listen to it all the time - a disc for all moods.

  • author: CD Baby

Female pop in the vein of Sarah McLachlan, Madonna, Fiona Apple. Though it's not like we need to compare Fisher to someone else. They were on the Tonight Show, several thousand top radio stations, 60000 CDs sold, on tour with David Gray and Duncan Sheik. They really topped themselves with this new 2-CD set. 1st CD is uptempo, 2nd CD is mellow. Perfect pop. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

  • I love this CD.....

I love this CD....the lyrics are perfect...the music is perfect...well..you get the idea... I can't wait for the next one...

  • Glad to see she's catching on!
    author: SReynolds

I've been listening to Fisher since 1999, and am very glad to see that they're finally finding the audience that they deserve! The vocals are amazing, and the songs meaningful & moving. I've given away about 1/2 dozen copies of One to friends as gifts, as the gospel of Fisher is worth spreading! Check it out -- if you've not yet enjoyed Fisher, you'll be much more than pleasantly surprised!

  • One of the best cd's I've ever owned!
    author: Karen Langefeld

Magnificent! Fisher keeps getting better and better. These songs touch your heart and soul. Fisher seems to pull you into her world when she sings and makes you feel as if you are witnessing her experience. A great extra is her rendition of Dream On - fantastic! Can't wait for the next album!

  • A gem in the midst of a lot of sacchrine crap
    author: Nittaney

To compare it to Tori Amos, et al, is to deny this artist endeavor it's true origninality. I'm listening to Uppers currently and I am blown away by how amazing, how clean and how refreshing the sound is. The lyrics are helped immensely, (not that they need it,) by wonderful instrumentals and excellent rythym. There isn't a throw-away song in the mix. A great deal, and EVERYONE would find something to love in this set.

  • Fisher is AMAZING!!!! Keep up the GREAT work!!!
    author: Jillian Clark

The songs are amazing. What a great selection. I can't wait for the next one.

  • Quality pop record with stunning emotional range
    author: Carl Wilkins

If you think the pop music of today is drab and dreary, listen to this cd which actually makes you emphasise with the songs subject. 'Oblivious' and 'Dirty Girl' are particular favourites, but its a strong album all round.

  • Just read the reviews...
    author: Riley

Music lover's don't lie. This is an excellent listen and will not dissapoint you with one track. From your uppers to your downers, Fisher has a song for every mood.

  • Excellent Voice and Songwriting
    author: Wesley Miaw

An excellent album of Fisher's latest songs. She has a wonderful voice and while all the songs are very good, there are a few real gems that you will just love. I only gave four stars, however, because there weren't as many on here that just grabbed me as with True North and One.

  • Fisher continues to improve
    author: Logan

This CD set is a great value. Superbly recorded, Fisher continues to improve on a terrific sound. This CD combines a unique voice with an original style and outstanding audio production. The instruments, including the difficult-to-capture piano solos, are truly excellent. All of the songs have samples - try them out and decide for yourself.

  • absolutely fabulous
    author: heather

this is a great cd. nothing more needs to be said!

  • L-O-V-E is all that Fisher can give to You
    author: Jae

ok you guys. Have you ever bought a cd for one damn song and not knowing other songs all sucked? Well I, just like you all suckers out there bought this cd because of one song called "L-O-V-E" from the PT cruser commercial. but I actually ended up loving the whole cd. This CD feels like I been listening to it all my life and so easy to listen. Great CD!! My new favorite songs are "L-O-V-E" and "Temptation". If you have a keen taste in music her voice is just undescribably beautiful especially when says the word "You" from "L-O-V-E" still giving me goosebumps. May be I am in love with someone?(you will too if not someday) May be I am in love with this song?(I am)

  • Perfect title for a perfect album...
    author: Ian

This is only the second Fisher CD that I have bought (kind of a mood thing). The Uppers and Downers CD-set is absolutely awesome, great and powerful voice, accompanied by an equally powerful band. A must have in any collection... Thanks...

  • This is a must have!
    author: Rob

    Wow.......

  • author: Franko Kowalczuk

The first thing that strikes you on listening to Uppers and Downers is how mature a record it is. These two have honed their craft over many years and have reached a state of professionalism and songwriting ability that most artists can only dream about. Nothing is left to chance and every note serves a purpose, every lyric is well thought out. From the opening notes of Different Kind of Wonderful on the Uppers CD, you know you’re in for a treat. Jimmy and Nothing is Real are equally impressive and Kathy and Ron do a couple of mean cover versions, particularly their version of Aerosmith’s Dream On. The tour de force of the album though is the second CD and Downers. Classical and Rock merge and the listener is taken to a dark place in the depths of their imagination. Highlights include the sinister Missing and beautiful and mesmerising Too Late. If you weren’t feeling emotional before you listened to this, you will be after. Fisher are a band that should rightfully be huge and this double CD collection could well take them one step closer to their just desserts. Listen and enjoy music as it should be!

  • Fisher just gets better with age!
    author: Doogie

Ron & Kathy can do no wrong! Uppers and Downers is a must-have set for any 'real' music lover. It doesn't take a record label to make a true artist. Lyrically, Musically, and Vocally this album touches the funny bone with Uppers like 'Dirty Girl' and Downers that touch the soul like 'Miss Ophelia'. Buy one for yourself, and a few more for Christmas as gifts!

  • great record
    author: dave arntsen

A Sweet release for any mood Reviewer: dave arntsen from manorville, NY United States A two record set from a label-less band with only one prior release to its credit, and even that gorgeous record with little or no airplay beyond the haunting ballad " I Will Love You"? Are they crazy? Thankfully for those of who still think of good music as art and not commerce, "crazy" can be terribly rewarding. Fisher has held nothing back in this dynamic and unpredictable set. The music speaks many languages, and lyrically the album hones in on the full spectrum of human emotion. Though distinctly styled "uppers" and "downers", neither disc can nor need be relegated to a particular frame of mind. Kathy Fisher's full throated whisper is evocative of many moods in even a single song! The lament "Ordinary Moment", at the heart of the "downers" record, somehow seems so hopeful in her hands, while the rapturous "Temptations" is almost scandalous on any record with the title "uppers". Other highlights from "downers" include "My Fantasy", "Missing" and "February 1994", while "uppers" features two stirring covers, "Dream On" and "L-O-V-E", ( The latter of which is used to sell cars by Chrysler{nothing wrong with a little commerce to pay the bills!}) and several wonderful new songs, including "Dirty Girl" and "Closer". Of course, as spectacular as Kathy Fisher's voice is, The composition and production quality on this record stands out as well. Ron Wasserman's patience with a song and attention to the most particular production detail on the record leaves with repeat listeners with rewards that single spinners might miss. "Uppers & Downers" is truly a music lovers record, and Fisher is a band that music lovers must support so that they may survive in the franchised world of corporate rock.

  • Sweet Misery: Impressive "Uppers + Downers"
    author: Little Willow

Upon receiving "Uppers and Downers," I sat down with a book and listened to both CDs back to back. It was two hours incredibly well spent - and here I go again, listening to them once more. The album entitled "Uppers" does not pretend that life is all puppies and roses. Instead, the songs remind us that love and happiness can come in many forms. "Different Kind of Wonderful" kicks off the album with an upbeat punch, happily reminding me of singer Jessica Riddle. From the all-too-true "Oblivious" (Mr. Oblivious / Love can so easily be found / Just turn around) to the perky "Don't Wanna Love You" (I don't wanna love you / No, I don't wanna love you / 'Cause if I go on and love you / And you go / What then?) the full music surrounds you and makes you tap your toes. "Dirty Girl" has an undeniably catchy melody coupled with dark lyrics. The cover of Aerosmith's "Dream On" is its own piece, not attempting to compete with the original but instead Fisher's own take on the powerful anthem. Television watchers will recognize this version of "L-O-V-E" from the Chrysler car commercial. Most powerful of all is "Closer," a heartwrenching track that builds and builds as it progresses, the type of tune that surround sound was created for. "Uppers" gives you something to wake up to; "Downers" gives you something to sleep to. This second album is not depressing, but rather raw pain played out for all to see. "Downers" offers piano accompanyment where the other CD had electric guitars. We meet a wide cast of characters - the seductive "Miss Ophelia," Karl, who is "Missing," the hesitant "Rianna," the thoughtful "Miss Kathleen," and others. It also has a great deal of yearning, but without being overdramatic and sappy, on songs like "Believe in Something" (If I could just believe in something / If I could just believe in anything at all / If I could just believe in anyone / I'd be happy). "Rianna" is a beautiful waltz; the word striking comes to mind. Prepare yourself for a different kind of storytelling. Expect melodies that will stick in your head and lyrics that will haunt you. I highly recommend both of these albums. I applaud Fisher for creating and sharing 23 new tracks with the world in this day and age when CDs seem to be getting shorter and more commercial. "Uppers + Downers" is an amazing double disc release that I cannot recommend highly enough.

  • Soaring vocals masterfully produced=the album we waited for
    author: Tom

The sound quality of "U&D" is much, much cleaner than the major label release "True North". We know Ron is talented as a musician and writer, but he really scares me with his production. The RAW sound of Fisher is from another planet it is so good. Perfect for Kathy's voice and range(which seems to grow every time we hear her). The piano recordings are absolutely breathtaking, as are the vocals. Both are lush, airy and have superb center channel depth of image devoid of digital edge. Since the "One" days Ron has upgraded to a Pro Tools system which has become the industry software standard. He recently upgraded to the Digidesign 888/24 boards so most of the recording was done at 24 bit (vs. the older 16 bit). "Nothing is Real" was recorded at 16 bit/ 48 kHz at Baxter's studio and sounds quite good. "Dream On" was recorded with a Neumann TLM mic similar to the one used to record "IWLY". For most of the other tracks on "U&D" Ron used Blue's "KIWI" mic. This is an award winning mic that goes for over $2,000. The right mic, preamp and (equally important) mic placement is critical in order to connect the emotion of the vocals to the listener. A huge component in Fisher music is the air around Kathy's voice that contributes to the breathy accents she adds to the vocals. Mixing masturbaters love to tinker endlessly by digitally adding various degrees of air around a vocal. The results are usually subtractive to the music, as the sound is not as good as a good mic expertly placed and recorded cleanly. With the right mic, you can hear the room (acoustics). When you close your eyes you can be transported to that room with the artist singing within the original 3 dimensional acoustic space. This trick is very rarely acomplished by even audiophile level producers with state of the art hardware. Kathy's voice blooms from a blacker backgound, sounds clean and more dynamic. This magic cannot be duplicated with digital effects. It must be recorded authentically experimenting with endless mic placement. I estimate Fisher has invested $30-$50,000 in recording equipment for your dining and dancing pleasure. It is a fraction of what a modern LA recording studio spends, but Ron has gotten amazing and superior results by making sure the signal paths are simple, clean and uncorrupted. Most musicians do not know the technical side of recording, particularly with the latest digital technology which changes so fast. The recording engineers who should know better frequently don't provide the best recording they can. They have to work under aggressive schedules/budgets and most musicians and record execs don't know any better or don't care. We have something very rare with Ron and I hope people appreciate the endless hours he spends to get it right. Isn't it nice to know there is some real quality left in this world? Artistry at the highest level by people who really care about the most subtle details most never even care to learn about. Fisher needs a record company to make music as much as a woman with a battery charger needs a man. The only useful purpose a record company machine would serve for this circularly sustaining duo is for distribution. Period. The label would then pay the invoice for promotion costs as Fisher is very capable of administering this themselves without interference. Let the bidding begin for the lucky company who signs them and gets the rights for this already made hit collection. I pray K&R and Elliot Cahn(Fisher's savvy manager) can keep the labels little pencils out of the genius this time around. Fisher has not lost their rightful place in line.

  • Fisher--WOW
    author: Leojinla

three words - I LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Continuing on a high note.
    author: Brian M. Weidemann

Amazing album, chock full of harmonies and hooks that Fisher perfects consistently. This is just a partial review of tracks, abridged from the original version, available at galaxy.inmyhead.net/fisher. *Dirty Girl* By far, one of the best songs on the album. This song has more character to it than any other song, so far as I can tell. And it's the little things that make it brilliant … the little break in Kathy's voice as she sings "Well, ah Hell!" (I love that part!) … her brilliant and thought-provoking use of the expletive "Shit!" at the end of the bridge ;) … and, of course, the ad-lib outro. "Have you seen my shoe?" makes me laugh. (It's the fact that it's singular that makes the joke, implying the image of having found one already … I don't know, I just think it's funny.) The last refrain sounds great, with the upper harmonies that I can tell were recorded lower and transposed, just a little bit. And the melodic changes from the earlier refrains really stand out because of it. (Kathy herself says I'm wrong, that she really sang those high ones, no studio magic!) I also love the little vocalizations, harmonized, separated between channels at the very, very end. I wish those could have gone on another couple bars at least. They're pretty. C, G, Am, F … Good, solid, catchy, I-V-vi-IV. It's cheesy, but it works. *Remind Me* Good, good song. This was one of the first ones that struck me when perusing the CD Baby clips. I like the "leave my lipstick kisses" outro sequence. *How We Met* Oh wow! I love those harmonies! I love that harmonium organ synth thing! This is a great opening to Downers, but I could hear it as a great closing track, too. *Miss Ophelia* I like the music to this a lot. And triplet meters are refreshing. This song has pull, a very strong progression. I love the way it builds, or give the illusion of building toward the refrain. Very nice. *Missing* I absolutely love the way this came out. I always liked the transition from minor key verses to the strong, "pop" progression during the refrains. It's slightly subtle, and that's what makes it work. The piano work is very expressive. The change of character into the bridge is perfect. This version takes the bare song that was the version on Minus One and really turns it into a piece of art. The addition of piano variations in the beginning and at the 3:00 mark are great. Perfect. *Too Late* I like how all the piano/vocal pieces are kind of grouped together at the end of Downers. One definitely must be in the right frame of mind not to be bored by such simple textures in an arrangement, and to really appreciate them. This is a gorgeous song. I would have liked to hear some harmonies in the vocals, but I think that would have detracted from the beauty it has just being one piano and one voice, so I think it's perfect the way it is. *Believe In Something* The line "someone hit me with a pipe dream" alone is worth the listen … very Fisher-esque. I like this song as the closer to the whole album.

I think I need to order another copy of Fisher's Uppers & Downers. One for the house and one for the car. I already ripped it so I can play it on my computer over and over and over ... neither CD will disappoint you. Favorite track is the very first on Uppers: Different Kind of Wonderful. BUY IT!

Rich in contrast of sound and style, this CD is a great addition to my short list of all-time favorites. Stand out tracks like "Closer" and "Temptation" touch on over-used lyrical themes and yet still sound fresh, without sacrificing honesty. This disc has the kind of depth that takes years of listening to reach. Classics are like that.

very good mix of songs between the two cds from slow to even some techno sounds. great lyrics accentuated by the awesome music and production of the cd's.

  • Perfect pop.

Female pop in the vein of Sarah McLachlan, Madonna, Fiona Apple. Though it's not like we need to compare her to someone else. She was on the Tonight Show, several thousand top radio stations, 60000 CDs sold, on tour with David Gray and Duncan Sheik. And she really topped herself with this new 2-CD set. 1st CD is uptempo, 2nd CD is mellow. Perfect pop. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
