notes

Bryan Fenkart is just like you.

The first thing you'll notice on his debut release "Imperfect Man" are the lyrics. Bryan's introspective, highly-emotionally charged words strip him down to his human core, while at the same time magnetically drawing in the listener with uncanny accessibility and naked honesty. Never pretentious, frequently clever, and always real, Bryan has placed his finger on the pulse of his generation, and this album is what he found.

The words are mingled with expertly performed pop/rock songwriting with sensibilities reminiscent of John Mayer, Marc Broussard, Ben Folds, and even the great Billy Joel. The songwriting is perfectly thought out and remarkably diverse. Combined with the masterful production of Charles Newman, the album takes you to a place that is equal parts polished and raw, epic and restrained, mainstream and indie. At times you'll find your feet tapping and your head bobbing, other times you'll find your heart breaking and your eyes welling with tears. But the whole time, you'll feel a sense of familiarity with the songwriting, almost as if you could have written the songs yourself.

Bryan's beautifully arranged music and careful heartfelt storytelling is revealing and profound, moving and upbeat, fun and devastating. It conveys the monumental struggle that wages every day: Man vs. their flaws. We all have our regrets. But rest assured, listening to this album won’t be one of them.

A co-worker gave me a copy of this CD. What an absolutely pleasant surprise! Terrific arrangements surround well-written songs. I like this CD so much, I play it on my Sunday morning radio show "All Mixed Up" on WDHA here in New Jersey.

Imperfect Man may prove to be the classic debut album of one of the most promising artists in the first decade of the 21st century. Bryan Fenkart approaches the angry young man with a vulnerability and sensitivity that creates a dynamic sense of introspection. Like Chris Carraba and Rivers Cuomo, Bryan Fenkart provides an all too earnest introspection that at times may make you want to cringe with embarrassment when you recall that time you revealed yourself to the one that got away. However, Fenkart picks up where Weezer and Dashboard Confessional leave off by providing a more developed sense of songwriting that automatically recalls now-classic composers like Billy Joel, Burt Bacharach, Tom Petty, Neil Young, and Elvis Costello. Fenkart’s superbly clean higher registers are quickly reminiscent of a vibrato-less Jeff Buckley and his natural tenor places him with a slew of contemporary singer songwriters like David Grey, Pete Yorn, and Ryan Adams. Expect to see Bryan billed alongside other Hudson Valley contemporaries like Ari Hest and Fred Niznik but don’t expect to hear him try and recreate his parent’s Al Green collection. Bryan’s genuine approach to songwriting creates a lyrical style similar to a mellower Holden Caufield inner monologue while his song structure blends Celtic rhythms and bar ballads to create some of the most wonderfully sad sing-alongs in decades. Inspirational hymns I haven’t heard since I broke out my parent’s record collection. Album highlights including “I Miss You”, “Empty Handed”, and the tears in your beer and bring me the bottle anthem “Wake Me Before I Die”.
