A combination of jazz fusion with the older rhythms of Brazil such as bossa nova, baião, and samba.

notes

I was born in Poços de Caldas; a small town in Brazil. I started singing when I was 6 years old. My daddy would sit on the couch, composing songs and I would sing along with him. He taught me about interpretation and how to play to an audience.

My first professional contract was singing at political rallies throughout my home state of Minas Gerais. At 11, I was singing in nightclubs and at private parties. Through everyone’s eyes I was a huge success at so early an age. But I wasn’t happy. I didn’t like the kind of music I was singing. I was offered my first recording contract at 12. I turned it down. People were surprised. People were angry. I took a break from performing.

It’s important to me to connect to my audience; to make them feel better than when they came in; to leave an impression in their soul. That’s not easy to do when you are only singing rock, axé, pagode and carnival. My main goal was to simply sing the kind of music I wanted to sing; and to compose!

So I left Brazil and moved to New York to sing bossa nova jazz fusion. Ella Fitzgerald and Leny Andrade influenced my style. Unfortunately, the gigs that paid were the ones for pop, rock and axé. I didn’t last very long doing that and I stopped singing again. A few years passed by and I gave it another try. I was singing bossa nova; mostly at Brazilian BBQ houses and a few private parties. But I still had no confidence to write my own songs. I moved to California to get a fresh start.

Sitting on the beach one day, the lyrics for É Minha Vez popped into my head. From that day on things really took off. I charged ahead and this first CD is the result of this energy.

My style is a combination of jazz fusion with the older rhythms of Brazil like bossa nova, baião, and samba. Listen to the creative arrangements for Darlin’ (an old Beach Boys’ tune) and Mudar O Mundo (Change the World), the bossa nova in Escondido, the power of Canto de Ossanha, the smooth jazz of Tarde em Itapoã, and the samba in Samba do Soho. My music is rich in brazilian percussion and creative horn and guitar solos further enhancing your listening experience.

I want my lyrics and beat to reach out to you; and land in your hearts and souls. I hope you enjoy my music.

I have enjoyed listening to Fabiana's CD E Minha Vez since I first heard her on Myspace. The music is fabulous and the musicians that accompany her are the very best. My favorite song on the CD is Mudar O Mundo (Change the world). The guitar playing on that song is delicious as is Fabiana's beautiful voice. If you like Brazilian Jazz/Bossa Nova, you will enjoy this CD. KH

Review by Paul J. Youngman - KJA Advocate for WWW.VINILEMANIA.NET E Minha Vez, Portuguese for It’s My Turn is the first CD for Fabiana Passoni, a Brazilian singer who now makes her home in California. The recording displays a vocalist who has great potential; there are moments throughout the CD when her voice is sounding excellent. Ms. Passoni is joined on the session by a fantastic group of supporting musicians. An easy listening Latin jazz album with bossa nova, samba and jazz fusion grooves that peak through in various tunes. The title track “E Minha Vez” composed by Fabiana Passoni has an Afro Brazilian feel, played at a moderate tempo with an upbeat that builds in dynamics, featuring the powerful voice of Ms. Passoni, a voice that is clear and strong, full of purity, with an obvious strength of spirit. The song also features a fantastic guitar solo, Dirk Freymuth on electric guitar lays down some fine blues-rock inspired runs. The rhythm section holds the line on a basic pattern throughout the song, Meia Noite on percussion does a nice job at providing a great ambiance during the finale. The recording is well produced, making fine use of the skills of the session players, with good arrangements and good sound quality. All of the songs that feature Fabiana Passoni singing in her native tongue, Portuguese, are well done. Thankfully seven of the ten songs on the recording are in Portuguese, two of the songs “Escondido” and “Samba Do Soho” are a mix of English and Portuguese. Ms. Passoni has a nasal sounding voice when singing in English, the song “Darlin’” by Brian Wilson and Mike Love, would have been interesting to hear in Portuguese. The trumpet break in the tune is excellent, care of Larry Williams. Robert Kyle on flute also pays respect to the song with a great solo. The song “Tarde Em Itapoa” composed by Vinicius de Moraes and Toquinho is a standard in Brazilian terms and Ms. Passoni does a very nice job with her rendition of the song. The horn section plays beautifully on this track, credit is given to Otavio Quartier in the liner notes for the fine horn arrangement. The horn section made up of Robert Kyle, Larry Williams and Eric Jorgensen play with passion and compliment the pure sounding voice of Fabiana Passoni. E Minha Vez is a good first effort and well worth a listen, Fabiana Passoni has great potential, she has a natural feel for the music of Brazil and her phrasing when singing in Portuguese is right on. The musicians on the album are excellent, they provide all the right elements to make this CD a hit. A professional recording all the way, the only production changes required are finding a different approach to singing in English.

  • Superb Brazilian Jazz Vocalist

If the rating system would allow more than 5 stars; I'd rate this CD with a 10. Fabiana's debut album is full of great surprises musically, but above all is her fascinating voice; I own several hundreds of Brazilian Jazz female vocalists; and Fabiana is at the top 10 right off the bat; very enjoyable.
