These inspiring young kids are messed up, so they make good music that could sell if they decided to give a damn. This band has the makings for a VH1 behind the music before it even has it's 3rd show. Sleeping in cars, stealing equipment, schedule 1 substances, the works. If the drama would stop maybe the music would go y'know?

If you've never heard of Eyeshow, I think forgiveness is perfectly allowable. They're not plastered on billboards or playing in constant rotation on the radio. But, given the right push, they certainly could be. Accessible without being boring and regurgitated, Eyeshow is an ear-catching (I'd say eye-catching, but...it's music) group bent on world domination (Author's note: This is merely an assumption. Other author's note: This is the third author's note in this review so far and I'm not even a paragraph into it. Things don't look good for the future). Eyeshow's album may be called opening, but with the talent displayed on the album, if they are the very opening band on a four-band or more bill, something is terribly wrong. Or they have found themselves on a national stadium tour with three much bigger names. Which is actually a distinct possibility, if someone in the industry would care to take any notice of them. Club tours, though, are an entirely different story. They should definitely be at least second on stage. But enough about future touring. I'm getting ahead of myself. The music on this disc is hard-hitting, precise, and intriguing. The songs may run a little long for the radio, but not by much and they could easily sneak into regular rotation. I mean, come on, "Schism" was a hit for some reason, despite its length. And that song is much longer than any tune found on Opening. Eyeshow is Tool for the radio, really. It's not as complex, deep, or profound, but it gets the job done and the band certainly has the necessary talent to go deep in the bigs (that's a baseball reference, ya dig?).

A pleasant surprise awaits anyone who stumbles across this little album. This Garden City,Mich band has only been around since August 2003 yet has managed to put together a tasty debut CD and very nice website,not bad for a baby band. Eyshow's CD features 7 tracks of cool Pink Floyd style of samplings mixed with a dose of early Tool,making this album thick as all get out.
Besides the 7 songs you get listed,the hidden tracks are well worth the money in of itself. The band consists of Tom Marsh(lead vocals),Scott Daubner (bass and guitars),Tim Sylvester,(keyboards,guitars,bass) Jon Houghton(bass,guitars and keyboards) and Alex DeJack (drummer)....all solid players and making this CD one to check out. Favorite tracks: "Choice" and the hidden tracks. Recommended.

This is the second or third time that I've stumbled across a really good band thanks to an internet news group. While surfing the web a few weeks ago, I came across a posting of some mp3's by a band named Eyeshow. The message attached said, "Good stuff, much like Tool." So, after listening to those tracks, hunting down the website, contacting the band and listening to the full disc I'm here to tell you that Eyeshow is a band to watch. These guys are good! The tracks on "Openings" do sound like Tool to some degree but really, this is smart progressive metal with great song structures, great vocals and superb playing. Listening to the soaring vocals on "The Life I've been Living and the time shifts throughout this album will immediately remind you of Maynard and company but the songwriting here is a little more accessible in my opinion and that's not necessarily a bad thing. I've played this for some hardcore metal fans who have since asked me for website info, etc. What's even more amazing is the fact that these guys haven't even been playing together more than seven months.Eyeshow comes from the Detroit area and only finalized their lineup in August 2003. They jumped into the recording studio in October and "Openings" was completed before they even played a live show. Currently, they are unsigned and playing only in the Detroit area due to being "broke" as their guitarist Tim Sylvester put it.
This won't stop you from hearing them however because you can get their CD through www.cdbaby.com. You can also go to their website www.eyeshow.us and download .avi's of performances and a couple of songs from "Openings" as well.
This one is HIGHLY recommended.

"Openings" offers seven solid tracks (plus bonus material) of complex, gothic-tinged hard rock that progressive fans can really sink their ears into. The layered arrangements, compelling samples (ala Floyd) and special guitar effects used on this production are sonic delicacies that rival current major label offerings. The lyrics are introspective, intuitive and sometimes cryptic enough to avoid lapsing into cliche' or self-indulgent melodrama .
"Openings" is undeniably derivative of Tool (right down to the color scheme of the packaging e.g. Undertow), but neither the band or this release suffer for the comparison - they evolve and expand on it. They mix elements of gothic-prog and hard-rock and deliver it with that compressed, metallic crunch we've all come to associate with Maynard's gutteral thunking. Likewise, Eyeshow deliver wide ranging dynamics that can take you from a pregnant whisper to an exploding guitar in just a bar or two. And though this music too is dark and heady (a place where some of us feel quite comfortable, thank you very much), it's not unapproachable. In fact, the vocals here may be a bit more approachable due to their modern nu-metallic feel as opposed to Maynard's now over-exposed painful pleadings, giving fans of Tool a new taste in the same bleeding vein. "Openings" is a retail-worthy release that shouldn't be missed - especially by fans of the emerging nu-prog. Local offerings at this level are rare and the bonus material is nothing short of brilliant (I don't want to ruin it for you, so we'll just say that it's not likely to be performed live). This is a grand slam for Eyeshow's first time at bat (what, another sports analogy Mitch?)

Longer than an EP,shorter than a LP,I think it´s safe to call progressive metal band EYESHOW´s debut album "Openings" for a mini album containing 8 tracks with a running time of 33 minutes. Among these 8 tracks we find a short instrumental intro titled "The first between" that floats into the song "One word" and the 8th song which is untitled and also closes the album,sounds like a painter drawing for his life with scary music in the background......put on the track on a real loud volume and I can guarantee you will be scared to death. Eyeshow comes from Detroit Rock City and has a mighty interesting sound like a mix of I Mother Earth and A Perfect Circle,alternative and progressive at the same time.
This mini album opens with the GOLIAT rocker "The life I´ve been living",this is progressive metal riding 1st class-a song that would make Queensryche full of envy why they didn´t write it. The other 2 highlights are "Choices" and "Analogy",this quintet delivers some major odd harmonies performed in a tasteful way....especially the nuance´ in their music is worth a grammy on it´s own. The negative side of this album are the 2 quite boring anonymous "Stuck in the idea" and "One word",but OPENINGS is saved by the extremely dreamlike "Better things" which is a calm and suggestive tune-almost like listening to a movie theme. I´m dying to hear a full length record with these guys!

Gothic tinged hard rock with progressive construction and deep well thought vocals. There are going to be obvious comparisons to Tool. They also admit to a little Floyd. It's dark, but not overly depressing. There are a lot of build up moments that go from soft to hard with a torrent of emotional fury. The vocals are pretty smooth and listener-friendly. I can easily see this getting some radio play. I'd be happy enough for it!

I'm biased, but...
author: Ryan GavinNo, I'm not in the band, but a member of the band mailed me a copy of their demo for an opinion. This is that demo. I'll agree with other reviews that this is a little more accessible than Tool, and far more organic and emotional. Simpler, but not simple, it is raw and honest, but still inspiringly beautiful. Better than 99.9995% of anything you will ever hear on the radio, if you bypass adding this gem to your collection, you might as well give up and resign yourself to a life of following Buckcherry around. As far as how their music touches me, words begin to fail. It's not all drugs and doom as some of the reviewers above would have you think... part of the Eyeshow meme is recognizing your mistakes,learning from them, and marching on. There is a theme I relate to in spades. As radio friendly as it is, it's all very unique to me, and yet familiar. A perfect storm combining the bands influences, not in a synchophantic fashion, but as an offering to the old gods. Sadly, I am informed the band is no more... this is the only chance you get to have them on CD. If you like Openings, however, do make sure to track them down on myspace: they left one final present there you won't find here.
A pure classic right from the start

Amazing CD

Eyeshow is Definitely An Opening

It reminds you of something or someone you've heard but you won't be able to pinpoint it. Lots of emotion. I recommend checking them out if you're looking for something new.
