USSR Symphony Orchestra/Evgeni Svetlanov, conductor
RACHMANINOV: Symphony No. 2 in E minor, Op. 27 • The Rock-Fantasia for large symphony orchestra, Op. 7
Evgeni Svetlanov became principal conductor of the USSR Symphony Orchestra in 1965 and won all the highest honors of his country in music. He died in Moscow in May of 2002, at the age of 74. Svetlanov's Rachmaninov recordings are justly famous as among the most definitive ever made. Recorded 1968 and 1973 respectively.
"What an essential champion of the soul of Russian music Svetlanov was... Svetlanov's years of directorship of the USSR (later, Russian) State Symphony Orchestra produced a goldmine of performances that should, if we lived in a fairer world, survive and thrive as a testament to an idiosyncratic sound and the passion of their conductor." - David Wilkins, Music & Vision Daily, UK
