TANYA EVANSON is a Montreal-born, African-Canadian multilingual Lover, Writer, Oral Poet, Vocalist, Dancer and Director of Mother Tongue Media who works from both sides of the planet - Vancouver, Canada and Istanbul, Turkey.
INVISIBLE WORLD | released in 2004 through a grant from the Canada Council for the Arts, Tanya's debut CD features poetry and song backed by some of Western Canada's best Jazz and World Music artists. It received rave reviews in Canadian media such as CBC Radio and The Province daily, which gave it 4/5 stars.
NEW ALBUM "THE MEMORISTS" will be released in autumn 2008 on Tanya's Mother Tongue Media label through a grant from the Canada Council for the Arts. Recorded in both Istanbul and Vancouver, it will combine poetry and song with Turkish music and Jazz. To be available through CD Baby.
MERCAN DEDE "800" | this well-known Turkish-Canadian musician's latest Electronic-Folk music release includes Tanya's oral poetry. In April 2008 it hit #1 on Europe's World Music Charts. In addition, Tanya has been performing throughout Europe as a Whirling Dervish dancer with this group since 2005.
BRIFO "SOUTHFUL" | Tanya is the feature oral poet and vocalist on Brifo's 2006 La Baleine Records release. Now a lounge cult classic.
MOTHER TONGUE MEDIA | Tanya's event production company presented music series' and multimedia arts festivals beween 1996-2004 in Canada. Watch for new events in 2008.
ALMOST FORGOT MY BONES | a videopoem written by and featuring Tanya Evanson. Directed by Katrin Bowen, it premiered at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival, has won several awards and been shown at festivals all over Canada, U.S. and Mexico.
ALCHEMY | combining music with oral poetry has allowed Tanya to open for, record with and/or perform live alongside artists such as Mercan Dede, Ursula Rucker, Michael Franti (of Spearhead), Rha Goddess (of KRS One), Brifo, Jerry the Cat, Goksel Baktagir, D'bi Young, Kia Kadiri, C.R. Avery, Pepe Danza, Sal Ferreras, Ted Joans, bill bissett and Wayde Compton. Some bigger Canadian performances include the Vancouver Folk Music Festival; CBC Television's ZeD TV and Toronto's When Sisters Speak.
