ESTEBAN'S BIO: Esteban Sehinkman was born in Buenos Aires in 1973.
He began studying the piano at the age of 15. His first teacher was classical pianist Susana Spadini. After 5 years of classical studies, Esteban entered at the Escuela de Musica Popular de Avellaneda (Bs As), where he studied jazz and tango. He finished his degree in 1997 and one year later, moved to Boston to study at Berklee College of Music. He focused in studing jazz piano and contemporary composition. In Boston, Esteban excelled as a pianist, playing at local venues and as a composer, creating new music.
In September 2001, Esteban moved to Chicago. He performed with several musicians, including vocalist Steve Evans, Josh Abrams, Jeff Hanley, Nori Tanaka and Taku Akiyama. In 2002, he completed the recording of “Froth of the days” ("La Espuma de los días") , featuring some of the most interesting young players of the Chicago area.
In 2003 Esteban returns to Buenos Aires, where he currently lives. He teaches piano and composition at CAEMSA y la EMPA, and he plays his music at the most important places in town. He performed at the Teatro Colon, Teatro Gral San Martin, Teatro Municipal de Bahia Blanca, Rosario Jazz Fest, Cordoba and Montevideo, among other venues.
In 2006 Esteban completed the recording of “Bufalo” (Limbo Music 2007), his second album, selected by the prestigious Club del Disco as “disc of the month, March 2007”. His main actual projects include the Esteban Sehinkman 3 and 7, and "Inmigrantes" Big Band.

ABOUT "LA ESPUMA DE LOS DIAS" (Froth of days, 2003). The Esteban Sehinkman Quintet (Music » Jazz) Argentinian pianist Sehinkman's self-produced Chicago debut, enigmatically titled "Froth of the Days," is already a candidate for my list of CDs of the year. The title and cover art are enigmatic and the music original, soulful and intelligent. I first heard Sehinkman backing his Berklee buddy, singer Steve Evans. He functioned well as accompanist but didn't unduly prick the ears. However, the CD permits some focus on this mature-beyond-years talent. Sehinkman hasn't been in town long but pulled together a useful quintet with trumpeter Brian Schwab, saxist Jeff Morrison, bassist Jeff Hanley and drummer Noritaka Tanaka. The group has a cohesive, entrenched sound and come over with hip force, like an Andrew Hill or Art Blakey Blue Note session. Schwab's attack whiffs of Dave Douglas, Morrison has the no-nonsense drive of Joe Henderson, meaning everybody plays like reputations depend on it. There is poetry and passion in the pianist's restraint--though there is bebop in places, he is no Bud Powell. Sehinkman's strength lies in a sensibility to counterpoint and dramatic shifts of rhythm and mood, his touch is at once twilit, then directional. The program is varied: "La Brava" tips a gaucho hat to folkloric rhythms, the exquisite dirge "Pesante" is draped in the gorgeous melancholy of tango, and "Seven Colors" and "Three Humoresques" reveal French classical proclivities. Sehinkman's lineup for tonight's release party is new, including in-demand altoist Taku Akiyama and bassist Josh Abrams, and the gig is doubly critical because, with the cursed blessing of the INS, Sehinkman must return to Buenos Aires later this week. ***** - John MacCalkies (Newcity, Chicago)
