A two CD mix of classical and pop music.

notes

In 1929, the ancient map "Piri Reis" was discovered in Constantinople. The map is extraordinary because it depicts bays and islands on the Antarctic coast which have been concealed under ice for at least 6,000 years. What civilization was capable of such exploration that long ago ?

On "Cartographer", we imagine that these explorers were from the tiny island of Numa in the Southern Indian Ocean. As advanced seafarers, they navigated every corner of the Earth. We have created a language unique to them and tell stories through song that describe their creation, discoveries and ultimate demise.

This is a 2 CD collection with Vocal and Remix versions of every song. The Remix CD also contains 2 bonus tracks.

  • In awe!

    I'm am completely blown away...

  • Stunning!
    author: Arumon

Cartographer is an amazing achievement, one that does not disappoint compared to their debut album, Unearthed. Unearthed is still one of my favourite CD’s ever so it was without a doubt hard to fill those shoes with a worthy successor. It however succeeds on all counts, Cartographer is another highly emotional, almost spiritual experience. Given the many excellent reviews here about the lead singer Luna Sans, I have to mention that- although her voice is richly evocative and thrilling- the real treasure for me is the second disk with remixes that delivers us the more familiar ES posthumus sound. Marunae Pi and Isunova Pi are are amongst my favourite tracks, set on ‘repeat’ more than once lately! It is breathtakingly beautiful to listen to and is inspiring in ways unimaginable. An excellent CD which keeps me guessing what ES Posthumus has in store for the future. Whatever it is it will be good! Thanks to CD Baby for the excellent service and fast shipping!

  • Wow

Incredible music - can't recommend this CD enough.

  • Excellent
    author: Elizabeth Schlaupitz

This is a great album. For one, I love the vocals by Luna Sans on the first disk. She has such an ethereal voice that's a pleasure to listen to. The second disk was just as amazing, as in their first album, Unearthed, showcasing a fusion between classical, choir and drums. I would recommend this album to anyone!

  • Awesome
    author: Jenel

I didn't think E.S. Posthumus could produce another album as good as Unearthed, and they haven't, but Cartographer is still brilliant. If you are a fan of Unearthed, then you will love this too. They've done it again.

  • I love Cartographer!
    author: stefano

This is the ultimate set to own. I love them both, Luna's vocals are graceful and full of spirituality, the remixes are in true Posthumus form, if only there was more music just like this, it is in a league of its own!

  • Very Nice
    author: C D Moskey

This is a great set, particularly the remix disc. "Ashielf Pi" in all its majesty is a perfect opening piece for disc 2. As much as I like "Cartographer", "Unearthed" is for me the more enjoyable of the two.

  • Luna Sans: Unsung heroine
    author: Siegfried Tigno

I do not understand some fans disdain for the first disk. It is obvious that E.S. Posthumus wanted to expand their horizons beyond trailer music that get gets pasted on everyone's fanmade music videos, and Cartographer is their answer: a self contained "film" with chapters that tell a story. Luna Sans sings wonderfully and although you may not understand the lyrics fully, certain words seem familiar here and there enable the listener to understand the gist of the atmosphere. While others expect the chorus of the Brothers work to express epic grand setpieces, Cartographer sails the other way away from mundaness of Holliwood reportoire and more towards matters of the heart...at least that's what I sense when I listen. When I finally came across listening to the 2nd disk, I cannot help but feel certain tracks really work better with Luna's voice singing. As it stands, though, I believe that one disk simply cannot work without the other. The instrumental Pi tracks alone have a somewhat different arrangement designed with the traditional Posthumus fan in mind, and one disagree on that either, given some of the replacement involving accoustic guitars, flutes, and heavier drums. Overall, I think it really depends on which mood one feels like listening too. I hope fans would be reasonable and keep both disks for whatever reasons may come...

  • Magnifique!
    author: Sofia

This album is on constant repeat in my house, car, ipod etc.... Everyone should own this collection. Luna Sans' vocals are whimsical and I truly adore the vocal versions. The orchestral are equally grand, yet something about the vocals move me a bit more... Well done all, my next question? Where can one see this live?

  • Between Good And Very Good
    author: Norman Talento

To be honest, "Cartographer" didn't blow me away as much as E.S. Posthumus' first album "Unearthed" did. Don't get me wrong though, this album is excellent and the sounds in it are superb! Especially with my favorite track in this album "Selisona Pi". First time I played that track, I literally said "WOW".

  • For almost any mood
    author: Eric Anderson

I probably listen to the vocal heavy first disc a bit less than the second. It is amazing how easily the emotion and intent comes across in an invented language. The pop/orchestral pieces are fantastic, sometimes reminding me of Yes in their heyday with albums like Tales from Topographic Oceans.

  • Cartographer by E.S. Posthumus
    author: LOTRKing

E.S. Posthumus has worked their magic once again with their second album; Cartographer is definitely superior to its predecessor (which was still genius of course). Cartographer is a 2 CD collection with each CD being unique and being able to stand alone as a single album, yet at the same time, each CD is a good reflection of the other. The first CD, while quite different from Unearthed (their first album), is a unique blend of many different ethnic orchestral sounds, with lyrics sung by the beautiful (both in appearance and sound) Luna Sans. The lyrics were written by the Vonlichten brothers (the founders of E.S. Posthumus) in a Latin-derivative language that they created especially for this album. In order, these songs tell the story of the inhabitants of the island of Numa, a fictional ancient civilization, their rise as a civilization, their exploration of the world, and their eventual fall. Listening to this CD, it is hard not to be swept away in the spirit of exploration, and to see what they may have seen. It is truly beautiful music. The second CD is much more akin to Unearthed, and is a remix of every song on the first CD, along with two bonus tracks. It follows the same cinematic orchestral tone of Unearthed, but at the same time it creates its own new tone. It would likely be easy to tell the difference between an Unearthed song and a Cartographer song. Cartographer “Peri Reis Remixes” makes use of a grand choir with almost every track, and does not have any of Luna Sans vocals. To me, this CD seems another adaptation of the story of Numa, even if it is in a different order, and while it may sound very different from the first CD, the same spirit of exploration, hope, and adventure is present. Together, these two CDs form one of the greatest albums that I have listened to, and one that has quickly become one of my favorites. My favorite songs from this album include: Oraanu, Mosane, and Marunae (along with their remixes). This album is worth every penny, and is definitely a great buy. -LOTRKing

  • Incredible.

it hasn't been out of my CD player or off my MP3 yet. Love it! I really love the maritime feel to the music.

  • Fantastic!
    author: Anita

Wonderful album. Great followup to Unearthed.

  • Absolutely amazing!!!
    author: Natalie

I have been playing this nonstop since I got it in the mail! Much prefer the Pi remixes, but Luna provides wonderful vocals as well!

  • Amazing!!!
    author: Andrea

I'm an authentic fan of Es Posthumus and this new work doesn't disappoint, it's magic and fantastic.........

  • Awesome!
    author: Marc

Fantastic album guys. A perfect follow up to Unearthed.

  • Tremendous
    author: Sarah

    Absoutely beautiful music.

  • AMAZING!
    author: Christina Park

Tremendous job once again from ES Posthumus! Definitely glad they released two CDs in this album. I think if they released just one or the other, it wouldn't have been as good. Luna San has an amazing voice and ESP did a great job in this new approach for their second album. The second CD (remixes) brought the familiar style back that was in the first album (Unearthed). Definitely worth the wait, but hopefully won't have to wait as long for the next one.

  • Enamorada!
    author: Jose

I love this music. My favourite is Luna! Her voice is like angel. This music is so nice and special. Everyone should buy!

  • Breathtaking
    author: Bob Benson

Another phenomenal release. Has a different vibe than Unearthed (even the Remix versions), and yet still nothing can compare to this beautiful music. Both albums are refreshing and never leave my player.

  • Tremendous. Again.
    author: Jason Twardowski

Lightning has struck twice. To be honest, the first CD featuring Luna Sans feels like thirteen movements to a single song. The vocals, though pleasant, lack captive variety. The second disc, on the other hand, rivals Unearthed. Soaring compositions and over-the-top theatrics capitalize on female vocals, crisp acoustic guitars and woodwinds. It is markedly different from the previous album, providing a fresh, different experience well worth the price. I'm ready for the next album! Please, not another three years!

  • Enlightening!
    author: Groban

It is a shame that this group is off the public radar. I discovered the sound from the theme of cold case, and could not get it out of my head...Cartographer is both beautiful and inspiring. Luna's vocals are a wise addition to the orchestral sound. I look forward to the evolution of this sound. They are going to go far. I wish great luck and success to you ESP and Luna!

  • My family loved!
author: Carlos Jorge Marco dos Santos

The second CD is in the same high level! Now I have a baby and she loves to listen... Me and my wife loved two... please let's work on the third CD! Congratulations! Best regards! Carlos Jorge (from Rio de Janeiro/Brazil)

  • author: wanokiwa

First: I really like your second album! I was surpise, as I read you have a vocal part and was a little bit nervous, if I would like it, but I do! As some other wrote, this album is different to your first one and I doesn't mean the vocal part. And thats what I like. It's not a copy of unearth, but it is your stile, which still wounderful to hear. I'm really happy, to get such a great CD for my Collection!

  • Do yourself a favor...
    author: Sherman

...buy this now. Stop reading this review and click the button, this album is phenomenal. I was a big fan of Unearthed and initially, it took me awhile to adjust to vocals when I wanted music that was popularized in theatric scores as in the first album, but I fell in love with the voice of Luna Sans. If you want the non-vocal arrangment, its on the remix disc, ...but after hearing the vocal arrangement, for me, its sometimes hard to go back as I imagine the lyrics there when they're not playing. Are you still reading!? Join me and feel my pain, you won't regret it.

  • Still love that sound but...
    author: Robert B

After being completely blown away with Unearthed I must confess to mixed feelings about this one. Still love the sound and the concept but somehow feel there is some "magic" missing this time around. You still have a big fan here though and I look forward to buying the next one!

  • Food for your Soul
    author: Daya'

Both CD's are Exquisite! My Favorites!

  • Better Than the First
    author: R. Lafontaine

I had to wait almost 3 weeks for this to arrive at my door, but it was worth the wait. This album was even better than Unearthed, though some have said otherwise. The second disc was my favorite. While the vocals on the first disc were nice, I only have a couple faves among them, the remixes on the second disc blew me away. It was the typical E.S. Posthumus style that I love so much. Anyone that loved the first album will simply adore the second. Cartographer was well worth the wait.

  • Well Worth the Wait!
    author: Elizabeth Knoll

Love it, love it, love it. I enjoy the instrumental version better but the vocals are well done and will definitely appeal to those who prefer vocal tracks.

  • Beautiful music
    author: Steven L Wiser

I love to sit back and listen to their music. Very relaxing to me.

  • Brilliant and Masterful!
    author: Patricia M

Absolutely stunning compositions and artistry. I thoroughly enjoy both CD's of Cartographer as I did with Unearthed. E.S. Posthumus, thank you for sharing your incredible gifts with us!

  • fantastic (again)
    author: mistamidget

love the second CD and is best played on repeat with unearthed in the second cd tray. The vocal CD stands alone as a piece of work that can be enjoyed in its own right.

  • Another masterful album
    author: Craig Brown

I don't generally buy albums without having heard the tracks, but on the evidence of "Unearthed" I was willing to take a chance on E.S. Posthumus' second album, and wasn't disappointed. The music has the ability to be stirring when you are in the mood, but can just as easily be used to soothe away the concerns of the day by playing softly in the background as you wind down in the evening. Those who own "Unearthed" will recognise the typical E.S. Posthumus sound, but the music remains varied. Themes are carried over from the first album, with undercurrents of "Nara" appearing from time to time, and the addition of a beautiful vocal CD this time was a great idea. If you liked the first album then you should purchase Cartographer - you won't be disapponted.

  • E.S. Posthumus, Cartographer
    author: Marla Price

These two CD's are awesome!!! The first is a very beautiful rendition of their new songs. The second it version two of all of those songs more enhanced with two extra songs included. I absolutely love the songs soothing but inspiring music. The calm your soul while inspiring your spirit to be creative and joyful. I highly recommend these two CD's they are well worth the price and wait. Hopefully they will not make us wait as long for their next production.

  • They've done it again!
    author: Aaron Kassler

ES Posthumus has once again managed to design an imaginative journey of color, creativity, and exploration through music. As a musician myself, I have great respect for their compositions and their unique melodies that keep listening journey ever fresh and tantalizing to our ears. Cartographer is certainly a different experience than Unearthed, but make no mistake, lovers of the Unearthed experience have found a cure for the musical longing in their souls! When I heard the demos of the remix CD on their website, I knew it was going to be an easy investment... and yes, I say INVESTMENT. Their music is in my arsenal to kindle my creative juices and I haven't even had the chance to listen to my non-vocal remix CD yet! Excellent work ES Posthumus! You inspire me!

  • Masterful Musicians
    author: Trevor Yoak

Some people may not like the fact that it isn't a repeat of 'Unearthed' but I say that just further proves the pure ability of E.S. Posthumus. Luna Sans has a graceful as well as stunning voice and I feel that the remixes without her are almost completely different songs, though equally beautiful. Absolutely magnificent!

  • Excellent Follow-up to "Unearthed"
    author: James P Bungard

Thanks to the Vonlichtens for not just making "Unearthed 2." They stepped it up by adding vocals to their brew and came up with another winner. Fans of Clannad and Enya will find something new to enjoy with a Spanish feel from the vocals and guitars, as well as African rhythms. The second disc contains remixes of all of the disc one tracks plus two others. Luna's lead vocals are nixed from the remixes in favor of a sound that is closer to that heard on "Unearthed." This is a consistently good CD set that will stand the test of time in your music library. Give it some time. "Cartographer" gets better with each listen!

  • Glad to have a follow up
    author: John Douglas

As others have said, not quite as good as Unearthed, but still a great CD.

  • Cartographer
    author: Ophelia Julien

I love this one as much as Unearthed, which surprised me. While I am not as wild about the vocal part (I think Luna has a GREAT voice, it just wasn't the kind of ES Posthumus music I was looking for) the second CD with the Remix is FANTASTIC. Like Unearthed, the music connects with something deep inside me and somehow sets if free. No, not just free, but soaring. Great stuff! I can't wait until I can listen to both works back to back -but I'm not quite geared up for the overload yet. Thank you, ES Posthumus. As always, it's quite a ride!

  • Worth the wait
    author: Julie Spears

Not quite as good as "Unearthed" but definitely worth the wait!

  • They Did It Again!
    author: Jonathan Celone

Once again, amazing. Love the addition of the first CD's artist, she is amazing. Honestly, both CD's are the type of music my entire family can enjoy and that is something to be said in this day and age. If I have to wait another 5 years for another CD, I will pay top dollar for it. Keep it coming guys and gals.

  • I didn't think it could get any better...
    author: Timothy Flemming, Jr.

This CD is even greater than the first one "Unearthed". I didn't think that could happen. This CD is flawless, capturing every range of emotion and thrusting you into its world. E.S. Posthumus, you've done it again!

  • The Best I've Heard
    author: Tempestt Sheppard

Not a day goes by that I don't listen to this CD once. The sound and rhythm can take you to any place in the world. When I heard the promo for the first time, I couldn't stop thinking about it. It had to be a part of my collection. Thanks to the composers for this awesome music they created. I look forward to their future work.

  • Who could toss either one? This is a work of art!
    author: A.Connor

It just kills me when people say, toss either of these two wonderful pieces of art. Both albums are on auto-play in my home, car, mp3 player etc. Cartographer was well worth the wait, and to those who cannot grasp Luna's vocals/lyrics- my suggestion; open your mind and listen to her again. I find her vocals to be angelic. Everyone should buy this album it is simply incredible.

  • Just wonderful
    author: Paula Irving

There were so many expectations of this album as a follow up to the awe-inspiring Unearthed but they have pulled it off. It is certainly a softer album than Unearthed but I would have been disappointed with Unearthed mark2, it is very impressive that they continue to develop their music and try new things. I am personally not totally converted to Luna Sans' voice yet but I'm sure it will come. The Piri Reis Remix CD is on constant repeat at the moment, all tracks while being instantly recognisable as es posthumus have a softer edge and are more melodic although you certainly get a more Unearthed-style fix from the epic that is Mosane. I am just in awe of these two amazing composers, everyone should own their music and I look forward to the next album with baited breath.

  • Fantastic
    author: Miss Rosemary Charles

Like most of the comments for this CD, I prefer mixes on CD2 to CD1. Luna has a lovely voice, but the second CD is what I'm more into. Not very track is good, but overall it is still a fanastic album. Please don't leave it too long to bring out a third album!

  • Terrific with a Caps "T"
    author: fishsurfer

I was hoping for something similar but different this time around. I think ESP got the first album perfect. Cartographer is another step forward. Much much forward. Its almost to good, you have to listen to it over and over until you understand it. I cant even imagine the amount of work that went into making this. Instrumentals, Choirs, Orchestras, Great vocals from Luna, crazy mixes, cutting edge effects and mastering, all around an awesome effort. This will be one of those albums I refer people to for years. The one playing in the background at your house and people ask what the heck is that? Thats what Cartographer is. Its truly Epic, like a Greek tragedy. Full of hope, inspiration, defeat, loneliness, and beauty. It captures what life is, many different things. In this materialized world of ours, bring yourself back in touch with our history, civilization, emotion, and raw talent from the likes you've never heard. Luna is amazing. Good find. The second CD is just as awesome. Its great they put both options on the table for us. Thanks to the brothers and Luna.

  • Very good!
    author: michelle martin

It is not as good as "UNEARTHED", but maybe the bar was set too high with that one. Toss the first CD it isn't worth the effort. The second one, "remixes" is the E.S.Posthumus we love. Worth the price and more...Enjoy!!!!!

  • author: jason

Definitely worth the wait - all excellent tracks that keep up the high standard of E S Posthumus. My only wish is that all tracks could be staggered alternately such that you have the original track, then the remix, then the next original track, and so on. Also, lyrics would be awesome!

  • Amazing
    author: Esah Bishop-Scott

This CD has many calming titles. I always feel more at peace when I listen to them. Although there isn't a huge amount of variety as the last CD, it's still worth a solid five stars.

  • songwriter
    author: Yvonne Kiser

Amazing and worth waiting for! I can't get enough. Luna Sans added another facet. It's fantastic and I keep it on all the time.

  • I'm Speechless
    author: Mark W. Petri

What an amazing audio adventure. I've waited so long and it was certainly worth it. This cd moves the mind, stirs the soul and is a joy from start to finish.

  • Great
    author: Michael Luciuk

Felt the music was repetitive and the tension did not go anywhere. Lacking the difference in styles that the first CD had. That being said amazing composition! Sound quality and generally the music was amazing.

  • I'm stunned
    author: Odd Rune Strømmen Lykkebø

Wow. I just... I mean... Wow. For years I have awaited this album, ever since the melodies of Unearthed danced in my speakers, I have been completely mesmerized by ES Posthumus' sound. And with this album, my love has grown mayhap deeper. My greatest fear is that I will listen to this album too much and grow tired of it - but I somehow do not see it happening. This is magic. Musical magic - sure; but it's more. It's real. Luna Sans' beautiful voice spreads across a vast musical canvas, painted with choirs, exotic drums and an ensemble of classical instruments. The music is grand; yet does not tip into pompous. It's honest, beautiful and sincere. My ears are smiling.

  • Simply outstanding
    author: EASE

Cartographer is perhaps less accessible than Unearthed. But does it really matter considering absolutely no skill in making salient music has been lost? They really have done it again.

  • Sounds of the gods
    author: Christian Guldager

I first learned about E.S.Posthumus when I heard their music used in the Spiderman 2 trailer. It was the most aweinspiring music I've ever heard. New and old at the same time. I've always liked movie soundtracks but this was also something different. I bought the fist album 'Unearthed' and I still listen to it often especially when painting - it's so inspiring. When I learned that their second album was out, I bought it instantly and I wasn't dissapointed. Great great music. Lots of power and beautiful tunes. PLEASE make another album soon. I can't get enough.

  • Wow
    author: Josh

Worth the price, trust me. If you liked Unearthed, or even if you've never heard them before, this would make the perfect addition to your CD collection! Just buy it; you definately won't regret it :]

  • Amazing sound...
    author: Tom Amacher

Never heard of this band before and just ordered another CD at cdbaby.com - but I have to buy this CD too - such deep and powerful music. It touches you directly..GREAT!!!

  • author: Joyce Freedman

What a beautiful mix of voice and orchestration. Really enjoyed the CD especially tracks 6 and 12. Luna Sans voice is amazing and fits well with the fictional language used. This is music for the soul.

  • Acquired taste
    author: Josh

Upon purchasing this album I was one of the true die hard E.S Posthumus fan's that found the remix album to be the real ES Posthumus sound. I have returned to say I have changed my mind. I did not like the idea that I was "stuck" on one sound, and not open to the other. So, I went back and began to really listen to the Luna tracks. I found them to be like a wonderful glass of wine. With time she really does grow on you. She is truly an acquired taste for those of us used to the hardcore beats, yet with time you almost hear her voice even when listening to the remixes. I must say her voice has a tranquility that I was unaware of at first. I can now say I am a fan, and find this entire set to be absolutely incredible.

  • Amazingly inspiring and melodic
    author: Scott Folley

While this new album from ES Posthumus is in many ways a departure from their album 6 years ago, there are certainly more than enough similarities, especially in the second remix disc, for those fans of the original 'Unearthed' release. Luna Sans' vocals are a surprisingly welcome addition to the project, providing a soothing texture over some brilliant orchestral and percussive production. Some listeners have criticized the use of a made-up language, however, as in the case of other musical projects such as Karl Jenkins/Adiemus, this fictional dialect enhances the listening experience, allowing the vocal line to be heard as simply another beautifully melodic instrument, intertwined amongst lush harmony, rather than a vocal line isolated from the rest of the production. For those still not fans of the invented vocals, disc 2 provides the dynamic film score and choir sounds reminiscent of the first ES Posthumus album that proved so popular when first released. There are in my opinion 2 or 3 weak tracks on album, mostly on disc 1, but for a grand total of 28 tracks, these are few and far between, and `Cartographer' has for me been well worth the very long wait! Highly recommended for fans of Adimeus, Karl Jenkins, Hans Zimmer and Deep Forest, this is one of the most enjoyable and melodic albums I have listened to in several years.

  • Amazing as usual
    author: Shawn Flanagan

These guys really know how to tell a story with a song. The remix disc is perfect and will become one of my new favorites; the Luna Sans disc is very fluid, soothing, and relaxing, but not your typical E.S. Posthumus. With Luna Sans' vocals on every track it almost feels like Latin Pop. Hopefully I will be able to learn to enjoy the vocals disc more, but in the meantime the remix disc has my complete attention. Well worth the wait, even though I would like to hear some more songs released soon in the style used for Nara.

  • Can't get enough
    author: Brian Barker

I first heard Posthumas on CBS Sports intro's and was intrigued. I did some surfing to find what was the awsome sound. Purchased Unearthed, now Coartographer. I'm wearing the discs out. Keep more coming!

  • Far beyond my expectations!!!
    author: Maestro Alexander

Finally! For the first time in 4 years I again found an album that blew me away and satisfied entirely! That says something, myself being a composer/producer , and somewhat of a connoisseur in crossover music like that of Era, Enigma, Lesiem, Gregorians and such. Not a single song is filler. It is so fitting and modern today, and yet has this delicate air of class and olden beauty about it that is sure to carry into the future and remain just as admirable. The songs speak of grandiose adventures of peoples long ago, as they embarked on epic travels to map the then-uncharted world. The unique blend of latin and other old romanic languages leaves the lyrics safe from being translated into some one specific thing, thus leaving each listener to complete the beautiful and curious mystery in their own imagination. And everyone's journey will be unique to them as they sojourn in this masterpiece. The female vocal is surprisingly low and soothing, and handles the big interval steps in these unique melodies with much heartfelt emotion and great skill. The included non-vocal remix album is fabulous as an alternate point of view of each song. As a producer, I must also note the astonishing quality and sonic separation of the recording itself. Much more could be said, but would be in vain. Do your ears and intellect a favor and buy this album - it's certainly one of those "finer things in life"!

  • Soothing, Relaxing, Breath Taking! Love It!!
    author: H.Scharff

This has got to be the best album I have heard in a very very long time. Every song captures you, and Luna's voice is angelic and soothing! Buy it...You will not regret it!!!

  • Music to my ears!
    author: William

Well worth the wait, now my next question is how do I see this live? A must have for any music lover!

  • An Amazing Achievement
    author: Matt Morris

This is a total gem of a CD. My anticipation for this album wasn't met; it was surpassed by leaps and bounds. It is an amazing achievement, a gigantic epic in a small package that will most definitely take people places they've never been before.

  • E.S PERFECT
    author: Sean

This double album is awesome! I have been listening to them both none stop. Luna has great vocals and the remix cd is in true Posthumus form! There is nothing to say about Cartographer except BUY IT!

  • Charges the soul, enriches the spirit
    author: Tee King

Musick has Charms to sooth a savage Breast, To soften Rocks, or bend a knotted Oak. I've read, that things inanimate have mov'd, And, as with living Souls, have been inform'd, By Magick Numbers and persuasive Sound. William Congreve, in The Mourning Bride, 1697 Just over a year ago or so, my life was made much richer by the discovery of E.S. Posthumus, a "group" of two brothers, Helmut and Franz Vonlichten. The music on their first CD, "Unearthed" transcended anything I'd ever heard. Closing my eyes and listening, I was whisked away to ancient Egypt in a caravan of camels. Transported to the midst of an audience being enlightened by the likes of Aristotle and Socrates. Carried on the eastern winds to a place of sacred Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines I learned about E.S. Posthumus after hearing "Nara", which is used as the theme for "Cold Case", a tv show I've never seen. I was flipping through channels when I heard this music that spontaneously and instantaneously mesmerized me. That rarely happens, so I immediately searched the internet to find out more about what I'd just heard. I found the E.S. Posthumus web site and was completely hypnotized by what I experienced. I had no idea who was responsible for these celestial harmonies of orchestration and voice or what the music was about (though I should have known by the sensations the music aroused in me). And, in one of those fortuitous happenstances that had just begun to manifest so often at that point in my life, I learned that "Nara" is an ages-old Japanese city known for its Buddhist temples. This music found me at a time in my life when I first questioned the religious beliefs I'd held for so long and as I was turning more to the ancient philosophies of the far east, to meditation and the dogma of karma and non-duality. The music of "Nara" was just the beginning, though; every song, named for an ancient city, moved me in a different way. It spoke to my soul of other lives and other times. My past lives of long ago ages? I'm still unsure of how that works, but it would certainly help to explain some of the mysteries of my life. "Unearthed" has been so much more than just a collection of 13 songs on a CD. I experienced the music on a nearly-daily basis. It has helped me to become the person I finally believe I'm supposed to be. An altruist. An idealist. A compassionist. A spiritual being. I feel the music spans time and space, and perhaps that's why it reaches so deeply into my soul, into all those selves I have been. The Buddhist philosophy teaches that the impermanence of life has each of us being reborn after death, to experience yet another life until we finally get it right...to reach Nirvana, or that state of bliss marked by the absence of negative emotions and suffering. I haven't reached Nirvana...yet. I sometimes feel very close, though, and if nothing else, my transformation has made me a happier, more accepting, compassionate person. Judging by those criteria, my next life should be a piece of cake if I don't actually reach Nirvana in this life. When I learned that E.S. Posthumus was working on a new album, "Cartographer", I was understandably enthusiastic. Of course, I didn't think that there was any way possible that this new music could be any better than what they'd already created. How could it be? In any case, it seemed that no one knew anything about the brothers Vonlichten, or when the album would be released, or what would be on it. Searching the net turned up an enigmatic lack of information which only fanned the flames of curiosity of E.S. Posthumus' fans. Then, one day, a new link appeared on their web site. A delectable hint about music inspired by the ancient island of Numa and its civilization of seafarers. And being temporarily placated, I waited. And waited. And just when I thought I could wait no longer, I checked the site again...and the music was there! Samples, but enough of a taste to know that this music, like that which had preceded it, would be life-altering. I know how dramatic that sounds, but my new life has brought a new awareness of who I am and how my senses react to stimuli. The E.S. Posthumus site linked to the MySpace page of Luna Sans, a talented young lady who sings the vocals on the first of the two discs of "Cartographer". I added her to my list of friends and sent her a message of appreciation for the music that would, I know, add dimension to my already blessed life. At the time I contacted her, I was unaware that the CD had been released a day or so before. On investigating whether or not I could pre-order it, I discovered that it was available, and so, was one of the first to eagerly place my order. I kicked myself for not paying the additional paltry sum for faster shipping, but as it was, the CD arrived much faster than I thought it would. We have since exchanged a few messages and comments. I know very little about her, but for some inexplicable reason, I feel a protective connection to her. I know better than to shrug off feelings of deja vu; I never ignore and rarely question the immediate sensations and emotions I experience because they give me insight into my life. Like a Buddhist koan, I may not understand the meaning, but the contemplation expands my consciousness. Just as when I discovered "Unearthed", I've been listening to "Cartographer" nearly non-stop. And, as with "Unearthed", I will not tire of "Cartographer". In fact, the two discs have enough contrast that if one doesn't suit my mood, the other will. The first CD, with Luna Sans, is a detour from what E.S. Posthumus fans will be expecting. The music is still incredible, but Luna Sans' vocals add softness. It's smooth and comfortable. Sometimes uplifting, other times mournful. Romantic, longing, contented, subtly defiant...her voice is ineffable; with the wildly varying styles of music, she sings the vocals for each perfectly, capturing the mood I'm sure the Vonlichtens intended. The second CD more closely resembles what fans of E.S. Posthumus have come to expect, with hard-hitting orchestration and a heraldic chorale. Once again, their music is unlike anything else, and perhaps that's where the magic lies. Perhaps that's why it speaks to me, and those like me, who know that there is real magic in the universe. It is the sound of my spirit running in overdrive...the music that sings to my soul, that reduces me to those subatomic particles so infinitesimally small that I cease to be anything but energy, and as such, I swirl in the cosmos to the tune and rhythm. I become part of the music as much as the music becomes a part of me. No other music I know has wrought the changes in me as "Unearthed" and now "Cartographer". Oraanu Pi builds to a musical climax that has me literally conducting an unseen orchestra of my own making, waving an invisible baton with the biggest, most goofy smile both on my face and in my heart. Mosane Pi...well, all I can tell you is that you'd better be hanging onto something when you get two minutes into the song. It is then that you will be teleported from the comfort of an extravagant, exotic palace to the back streets of ancient Arabia, chased by evil genies on magic carpets. The two CDs of "Cartographer" will enhance my very being. How do you even begin to thank the artists who created the music for something that huge?

The first time I heard ES Posthumus, I was so blown away by the songs, I went to sleep to a combination of Antissa, Cuzco, Ulaid and Isfahan every night my freshmen year of college. They managed to recreate that magic with this cd, and even in some ways surpass it.

Great album, didn't expect anything less. From the first album my favorite was Mosaine (6). Rob Dougan, now is your turn..

Ce nouvel album de E.S. Posthumus est un vraie mervielle, une musique magnifique !!! J'ai une préférence pour les versions Pi (Orchestral) que celles chantées par Luna Sans.

  • Meets (high) expectations
    author: Andrew

It looks like they have taken an 'enya' style approach to this album, with vocal tracks on all the songs. Fortunately, whether you agree with this or not, the instrumental remixes on the second CD will satisfy most die hard Unearthed fans. The only problem now is that I need better speakers.

I too have been waiting 7 years for this album. Unlike the comments made by Jon, I was nothing but amazed by the vocals. Although I agree that the instrumentals alone were worth the wait, I found Luna Sans to be invigorating. This music is unlike anything I have heard and both Luna and the remixes are nothing short of perfection. If only there was more music out there like this...

This great voice will make everyone relaxed while listing and dream about the beautiful voices in the world we live in. You make me smile. Joan

I feel the people who reviewed this CD collection prior to myself have said all that needs to be said.

  • Thrilling
    author: jon

The first CD was completly not worth the wait, Luna Sans voice is not bad at all, but when I think to myself that I have been waiting 7 years for this album, I expect to hear something more than that. The second CD is worth the price alone, its completly thrilling, and is so much fun to listen to. definatly on par and often times much better than the first one. A much more mature rendition on their style, and more focus, whereas the first one was more of just an experiment in their style. Buy it for the 2nd CD....maybe luna sans will grown on me, thats happened with other music before...we'll see. THIS IS HOW MUSIC SHOULD BE.

  • Really Enjoyable
    author: Rania

Being that I am a new fan I was unsure what to expect. I found both disc's to be incredible. Although I now know that ES Posthumus is known for their cinematic "style" I actually found "Luna" to be lovely, the lyrics seemed to help me relate somehow. Either cd is worth having, and how great is it you can have both! Great music, Bravo!

  • Amazing, Beautiful, Absolutely Astonishing!!!!

This album is simply incredible. This was everything I was expecting in the album and then some! I was unsure about Luna Sans at first, but it ended up being a nice breeze to the unique style that is E.S. Posthumus. The first CD is more low-key, relaxing, with great vocals by Luna Sans, but the second CD is where E.S. Posthumus really shows why they are the best when in come to this style of music (or just music in general). The second CD is absolutely incredible! I've been waiting for this album for years and it was worth it! I am completely blown away by what I have experienced! E.S. Posthumus manages to outdue themselves and introduce an orchestra and choir that's out of this world! So amazing you'll probably forget that these we're the same tracks you listened to on the first CD. Awe inspiring compositions, a rividing choir, and the unique use of instruments we've all come to know and love in E.S. Posthumus. The are no words in existance that can completely describe just how amazing this album is. This is a must buy for anyone and everyone! Thank you so much E.S. Posthumus and CD Baby!!

The moment I heard E.S. Posthumus' first album Unearthed, I was in love with it. This new album has managed to re capture that same feeling. The music from E.S. Posthumus never gets boring to me, and I look forward to future releases from this group!

Cartographer creates a musical-emotional environment full of unsullied and sophisticated sound. I’m completely enchanted with the beauty and elegance of this fantastic creation. Every time I listen, it is a thoroughly enjoyable experience. I can’t praise this CD enough! And Luna…she adds an undeniable enhanced dimension to the mix!

  • author: JM Buck

Absolutely wonderful! Luna Sans' voice is magical. The instrumentals are as as moving, if not moreso, than Unearthed. We will wear out our tracks listening to it. Keep the CDs coming!

  • a breath of fresh air

This double cd is a must have! If in an orchestral mood the remix cd is just the answer, however I found Luna to be true and refreshing- her voice is natural and calming. Well done ES Posthumus, its about time!

"Luna Sans"....what a beautiful voice! The combination of "Luna Sans" and "E.S. Posthumus", is magical.

  • Such Diversity
    author: Jace

I'd like to retract my statement in the previous review, if I may, that the instrumental tracks were in all cases better than the vocal ones. Upon further listening, I have discovered that there are at least a few tracks sung by Luna that certainly do the songs more justice than their vocal-free successors on the second CD. Both CDs are great to listen to, so the two styles are a good break from the ordinary if you start to tire of either one.

E.S. Posthumus have renewed their art-form through this work of sonic bliss. Their craft on this album, in my opinion, goes beyond "Unearthed", with each song layered intricately to the finest detail. 'Cartographer' kicks off the year with as an exceptional addition to an under-appreciated genre of music. Favorites from the album so far: Mosane Pi and Marunae Pi.

  • A different course
    author: Micha Morales

I had high expectations for this album, and have been looking forward to it for a long time. Now that I've got it, I'm somewhat disappointed I must say. It's not quite what I hoped it to be. Expectations aside however, it IS a good album and after listening to it a third time, it has grown on me. Cartographer had big shoes to fill, but instead it put on its own and went its own way. If you liked "Nara", "Ulaid" or "Cuzco" from the Unearthed album, then Cartographer is most certainly for you! Otherwise, a good album, worth every penny.

Incredible. The instrumentals on the second CD are preferred to the lyrics on the first however.

  • Better than the first! Yes it's possible.

I am blown away by this album, but let me start by saying that for die-hard Posthumus fans, the so-called "remix" CD (disk 2) is the real album here. The first CD contains 13 tracks with solo vocals sung by Luna Sans. Don't get me wrong, she does a nice job and has a beautiful voice, but disk 2 is FAR more than a simple "remix" CD. I have no idea why they'd sully these tracks with that description. In these tracks the 13 from the first CD have choirs and solo instruments in the place of Luna's vocals, plus electric guitars and electronics on some of the heavier tracks. This is the Posthumus from "Unearthed". This here, to me, is the group's true colors, and this disk blows the vocal disk clean out of the water. I was rather captivated with the first CD, as it was the first I listened to, but every song is even better on the second disk. I couldn't believe my ears when I heard how complex and passionate these songs are. After disk 2, I'm really wondering why they made two versions of the songs. I suppose disk 1 is somebody else's cup of tea, but it doesn't have as much of the unique sound that only Posthumus can dish out. 7 years were well spent waiting for this album. Let's just hope it doesn't take another 7 for the next.

  • Decent showing
    author: Mike

The album comes off as a rehash of Adiemus more than the ES Posthumus I'm used to from "Unearthed". The "cinematic" feel is gone in place of a more new age feel. I'm not sure it's possible to really outdo their debut album, but this is a solid, solid effort.

Thankfully, I haven't had to wait so long...I was first introduced to E.S. Posthumus in June 2004 [the music...not the group :)]. I ordered this CD before I even played the sample tracks. My favorite track thus far is Raptamei. These guys sure do know what they are doing. A HIGHLY RECOMMENDED PURCHASE!!!

Wow! Just over seven years after the initial release of the album "Unearthed", the time has finally come. This album is a treat for the honest fans who have been waiting all of this time for the second album. The second CD is also a very generous offer. Congratulations E.S. Posthumus, and please keep up the fantastic work!

  • Another brilliant effort!

Once again, E.S. Posthumus delivers a FANTASTIC album! GREAT JOB. Some of these songs are just brilliant beyond description. Oraanu Pi is a favourite of mine.
