” An always explorative saxophonist, accessible though with a personal perspective toward the music he plays.” ( JAZZREVIEW.COM )
Esa Pietilä is among the most talented saxophonists and composers in the Finnish jazz scene. Pietilä's original style and various projects, in which he has participated both as a musician and a composer, have stabilised his position on the national jazz circuit, added with vastly growing general interest to his works and projects on the international festival scene.
Freejazz-oriented, Scandinavian music of Esa Pietilä Trio (Pietilä - ts, Uffe Krokfors - bass, Markku Ounaskari - drums) which explores new improvisational fields of freejazz expression, is the primary project of Esa. The Trio has aspects of every angle of strong communication between the members, ranging from straightforward energetic free playing to colourful soundscapes, by not forgetting the use of different pulses, colours and duo combinations within the group.
His Trio and other small group projects of his and others have led him to perform in Finland, Sweden, Norway, Germany, France, Italy, Iceland, The Netherlands, Austria, England, USA, Australia, New Zeeland, Brazil, Cuba, with the names like Ron McClure, Mike Nock, Odean Pope, Mathias Eick, Anders Bergcrantz, Claudio Fasoli, Brian Melvin, Kjartan Valdemarsson, Hilmar Jensson, Johannes Mössinger, Jarmo Savolainen, Raoul Björkenheim, UMO jazzorchestra, Espoo Big Band, Roland Vasquez, Erling Kroner, Jimmy Knepper, Roland Wesp and Iro Haarla....

Press quotes :
“Pietilä injects immediacy and surprise into his playing by going for unplanned gems that like-minded interaction can discover through spontaneous playing. His work is of an always explorative saxophonist, accessible though with a personal perspective toward the music he plays. CD “Direct” is the work of a jazz artist worth the search.”
JAZZREVIEW.COM, Don Williamson
“ while never resorting to the tired bag of tricks that so few have been able to resist before him....And his tone is gorgeous."
CADENCE, Robert Spencer
” By putting texture and interaction over harmonic development and song structure he highlights a larger goal: creating a unified group identity. With a maximum of group interaction, Esa Pietilä trio delivers a visceral gut-punch with both urgency and sublety.”
