notes
“ . . . a new album by Ernie Mansfield, a flutist, and Juan Bibiloni, a guitarist. It is called ‘ColorDrops’ . . . These two have a kind of musical togetherness that is as rare as it is satisfying. The tunes are largely originals. although another jazz-Latin great, Egberto Gismonti, is represented by one tune and the album includes perhaps the anthem of this country’s musical love.”
-- R. C. Smith, Morning Herald, Durham, N.C.
“Spanish guitarist Bibiloni joins flutist Mansfield for Latin jazz-pop material that shows . . . prowess at both rhythm and riffing . . . swings effortlessly through Luiz Bonfa’s ‘Morning of the Carnaval’ and Egberto Gismonte’s ‘Loro’, demonstrating . . . deftness in both fast and slow settings.”
-- TM, Guitar Player Magazine
This re-issue has improved audio quality and graphic design compared to the previous release.
Formerly released on the MP3.com website from 2000 to 2003, several of the songs achieved “hit” status; “Sambita” reached #1 ranking (number of plays) in the Brazilian category; and “Morning of the Carnaval” and “Stand Upon A Star” both reached #3 ranking in the Bossa Nova category.
In a letter to Ernie Mansfield, the reknowned American composer John Adams wrote: “. . . you have a very lyrical gift and compose in a very refreshing, tuneful style. I thought all of the melodic ideas were interesting and not at all trite . . . I think it’s very pleasing music of its genre . . . I’m pleased you gave me the chance to hear it.”
Ernie Mansfield is a flutist, composer, and multi-instrumentalist. Classically trained and jazz-infuenced, he has written for, and performed with, many jazz, folk, pop, rock and R&B groups over the last 30 years, both here in the U.S. and in Europe. He has performed with Maria Muldaur, Dan Fogelberg, Vassar Clements, Nanette Fabray, as well as performing with his own groups, which have included Mary Watkins (formerly with Holly Near), Glenn Cronkhite (ECM), and Juan Bibiloni (Polygram). He has composed and performed music for many modern dance companies, including “Company in Flight” and “CazDance”. His credits include albums, soundtracks, children's music, commercials, music for educational software, orchestral works, and works for dance theatre. Ernie also doubles on saxophone, keyboards, EWI (Electric Wind Instrument), and other instruments.
Juan Bibloni - aka Joan Bibiloni in Spain - is possibly the most well-known jazz guitarist on the island of Mallorca, Spain. As a recording artist on Blau Records, Polygram, and others, he has recorded numerous albums, and worked with such artists as Paco de Lucia, Larry Coryell, Kevin Ayers, and others.

A Great Find - Wonderful !
author: Frank SilverA wonderful blend of sound and instruments. These tracks have a sense of familiarity I identify with and yet are surprisingly new and refreshing. High marks.
Lovely and surprising
author: Lory Marna PoulsonThe sounds and arrangements here are beautiful, as one might expect -- but there are some surprises, too. These two professionals can change the pace and interject the unexpected...all within a lush context.
