Not Routine or Part of the Machine

Whilst the Arctic Monkeys and The Kaiser Chiefs have been
basking in their flavour of the month status, Ernest have
been busy gigging, writing and modestly becoming the
most talked about new band in the country. We spoke to
them briefly, watched them play and in the immortal words
of Neil Young were ‘blown away’.
Let’s be honest we go to gigs all the time that are ‘ok’. You’ll say ‘yeh they were
good’ when what you really meant was ‘average’. It takes something special to
make the spirit soar, make you forget about life’s trivialities for a while. A band that
doesn’t follow fashion or cling onto the coat tails of the latest fad. Most of all a
band with passion, truly believing in what they do, the special chemistry that’s
come from somewhere. Who knows where? I’m sure Ernest don’t. That’s the beauty
of a great band. Not being formulaic, just doing what you believe in.
I don’t know Ernest. Not even their names (yes i got a demo and spoke to them via
email and the singer/guitarist at the gig), but the important thing is that I ‘found’
Ernest. No hype, no PR, they just appeared on an unsigned bill in Manchester
and left everyone in the the venue gobsmacked. You may have guessed by
now that I’m avoiding a description of Ernest’s sound. Well, it’s pretty
indescribeable. Unpigeonholable even! Suffice to say that ‘Routine’ and
‘Preggie’ are already in my ‘most played songs ever’ category.

Now that we’ve told you it’s hard to put an anchor on Ernest’s sound,
‘Routine’ reminds me of Mansun at their sublime best. ‘Preggie’s’ structure lends itself to Radiohead circa OK Computer and the grandoise instrumental opener had more than a nod to Floyd. Conversely, the subject matter veers from the down to earth “pram pushing, cig box crushing” ‘Preggie’ to the spaced out randomness of 'Growser'. Throw in a huge slice of funk “Puppies’ (Single out exclusively from June 19th as a double aside with ‘Preggie’) and you have an ‘attempt’ at permeating the Ernest enigma.
Signed to thier own label Sonic Vista recordings,
other than the single the only material available is the first 5 track ep ‘(Pimps, B**ches) and
Superheroes’ which you can buy at www.ernestnet.com.‘Puppies’,
‘Routine’ and ‘Preggie’ can be sampled
at myspace.com/ernestband.
Gigwise they finished off
a tour at The
Roadhouse, Manchester
on May 30th. Check the
website for updates.
