A lot has changed...
since those carefree days of running through the fields of Anoka, Minnesota. For me, freedom was a state of being, and truth somehow seemed truer. My greatest fear was to be called on in class. And my greatest lesson came from my dad, whose words are written on my heart and imprinted in my DNA. "Johnny," he'd say, "always tell the truth, no matter what the consequences... nobody trusts a liar."
A lot has changed...
in the 'land of the free.' Today, freedom is a buzzword staged for a sound-bite, and truth is determined by the "bottom line." The state of the union is divided, and the 'powers that be' have decided that "might makes right" and "the end justifies the means." And the spin machine spits out propaganda like never before, while the herd rushes headlong over the precipice, like lemmings to the sea. Even the prevailing Christian theological paradigm endorses killing in God's name, and touts ancient "eye for eye, tooth for tooth" retaliatory tactics that fly in the face of the words and actions of Jesus.
A lot has changed...
in me, and now, more than ever, I am compelled to resist the pride, the greed, and the fear that undergirds our current moral climate, and move to where the winds of truth once blew... towards one love, where every nation, tongue, and tribe is valued. These things matter... thanks for listening.
