Erik Helm is an up-and-coming instrumentalist who's unique style can be descibed as "pop piano with classical flair". It is the meshing of the popular and the classical that gives the piano artistry of Erik Helm its trademark sound. Although classically trained, Erik's concerts feature music that appeals to a broad audience. Forget about a traditional piano recital - a typical show will feature music from the movies, broadway, the latest pop selections, and even some original composition.
Erik Helm is often compared with artists such as Dino Kartsonakis for his engaging stage presence and flair for showmanship.
"I want people to know that instrumental music is still for today.", says Erik. "When I play for my audience, I want them to feel the music and be involved." "That's why I feel that arrangements are so important." "When people recognize the melody, then they are instantly connected to the message that I am communicating."
Unlike most pianists pursuing a concert career, Erik had a relatively late start. He didn't start playing the piano until he was about 12 years old! It all started on old, upright piano that Erik's family had gotten when they saw an ad in the local newspaper for a piano. Soon, it was discovered that Erik could easily hear and play songs that he heard and almost immediately became the pianist at the church he attended. After that, he was enrolled in piano lessons and that is where the formal training began.
