notes

What happens when psychedelic-rock minded producer Samuel Nelson fuses Arabic maqamaat, electronica, classic rock arrangements, conscious lyrics, and a lot of groove? You have to hear!

'Eden Mi Qedem/'Aden Min Qadeem (להקת עדן מקדם / عدن من قديم ) is a genre-defying world fusion band that is crossing musical and cultural boundaries that have never been crossed. Their self-titled debut album, which has been called "a masterpiece of spiritual ethnic rock," captures the listener from start to finish with melodic and exotic pieces, ranging from the highly danceable to the slow and mesmerizing. The beautiful sounds of qanoun, nay, and other classical middle-eastern instruments intermingle with wah-wah guitar and a classic-rock musical structure, while the Hebrew, Arabic, and English vocals sing original and traditional spiritual texts.

(It is reccomended that you click on the "hi-fi: broadband" to the left)

The Name:
The Jerusalem-based group, whose name in Hebrew and Arabic means "Ancient Eden " is a rare beacon of light from a troubled region. It unabashedly draws inspiration from the Hebrew Bible as well as the Muslim call to prayer, and shows the beauty that is possible when the Jewish and Arab cultures and faiths work in harmony.

Review:
"The album is a masterpiece of spiritual rock...Jangling strumming draws the listener into "Sof Davar" ("The Final Word") while muezzin-style chants pepper interludes on "Yedid Nefesh" ("Friend of the Soul"). Layers of hand percussion and computer-generated beats build and collapse, while some of Israel's greatest players of exotic string instruments show off their chops. Nelson's stunning vocals drench every track."

  • Wonderful
    author: Sheila G Fay

A wonderful surprise to hear this unique album and I was happy to recommend it to my friends and family in the US and Israel. I am hoping my daughter will choreograph a dance using one of these haunting melodies. Kol la kavod to all the artists.....I use to know Samuel Nelson's mother when I was young and I am certain she is very proud.

  • Absolutely amazing quality of sound and style

When one buys on-line you never are quite sure what you are going to get (if you are going to get) when it gets there. I will buy from CD Baby again. It was a good experience over all. As to the CD Eden Mi Qedem, I am almost speachless. For their first album, wow, when are they making another?! The quality is top notch. The style is a free flowing blend of old and new melded together in perfect harmony. The lyrics are clear, crisp and move me to tears.

  • Beautiful music, love the variety of styles and languages.
    author: Cathie Rodriguez

I heard some of this CD on The Beat, and couldn't wait to buy it. The music is hauntingly beautiful, and although I only understand the English lyrics, the music itself impacts me profoundly. Its blend of Middle Eastern music with other styles and its use of a variety of moods and languages make this CD interesting and unique.

  • Musical Garden of Eden!!
    author: Hillel

Abundant gratitude for bringing a bit of the garden of eden to my ears. A well written, well recorded and deeply felt album. Beautiful!

  • This was awesome!
    author: J. Stahl

I received the CD in near perfect condition (in the mail the case got a teensy chipped, but that is OK). The CD itself, the artist/musical style are Awesome. It was totally what I was looking for and more. For me, finding Mizrachi music that I enjoy is a chore, but this was perfect. I found Eden Mi Qedem Via Ben Bresky's show on Israel National Radio, schlepped over to CD Baby and TADA! It was here! Listened a little on their site and here, and decided it was best I ordered. So I did, and never was I more pleased!

  • Outstanding muscianship, outstanding conception
    author: R' David Bockman

Since I received this CD two weeks ago, I have listened to it a lot. It inspired at least one of my high holiday sermons and got me places on time (it's funky and hypnotic, and helped my car to zoom even during some traffic slowdowns). It makes me want to go to Israel, knock on the guy's door, and join his group. I don't know if any Arabs have embraced this music, but they should. It most resembles the Rai music of Khaled. Get it, listen, open your soul...

  • Lush, entrancing, evocative, passionate, splendid...
    author: Chazarmaveth

An extremely mature debut album from an artist whose palette remarkably transcends the classification of "Middle-Eastern-Rock-Fusion." A unifying theme of cultural and, more importantly, spiritual syncretism is omnipresent in the rhythms, melodies, instrumentation, and subject matter of this unique 45+ minute foray, the likes of which one rarely hears emanating from the international music scene. Exotic yet intimate, universal yet deeply personal, atmospheric and intelligent yet funky and danceable, this album deserves an extremely wide audience in the present moment, which I hope it receives in scores.

  • amazing, haunting, inspiring, renewing, deep Torah
    author: Rabbi Shoshana Leis

middle eastern singing mixed w/ western influence...it's like the idan reichel project. Samuel Nelson could be the next mattisyahu...track 5, desert call should make it big, it moves me to tears and stops me in my tracks every time i listen to it...LOVE the blend of genres (influences seem to range from arabic music to jane's addiction to U2 to the grateful dead) the language mastery of this artist is remarkable and inspires peace through universality
