Exciting music with nuance
author: Just Jerry"12 Ways To Live" is an exciting sophomore effort from singer/songwriter Emily White. Her lyrics continue to show impressive subtlety, reflecting life's complexity. "Believe In Me" is a song about love, but I wouldn't call it a love song. It's not that simple. But then again, that's her point. In "Railroad" she shares her frustration with a relationship without getting bitter. She pokes fun at songwriters' overused metaphors, lightening the tone in a very effective way. "Good Enough Reason" is a touching song about how the faith of someone close to you can keep you going. "Election Year" and "Bayou" show a social awareness and insight that's uncommon for such a young performer. White spreads her artistic wings in "Secret Song", which demonstrates a new style that is hauntingly beautiful. The songs, while more polished in the studio, retain the power and charm of White's live performances. If you want music that doesn't slap you in the face with its message like a telegram, Emily White has just what you're looking for. She's definitely a thinking man's songwriter and a champion of the Age of Nuance.
