notes

With her jazz-steeped, acoustic punk stylings, and an astonishing seven recordings under her belt on her own independent "Few'll Ignite Sound" label, Ember Swift continues to solidify her reputation as one of Canada's truly substantial artists.

Among other recent honors, Ember was voted as Toronto's vocalist of 2001 by the readers of NOW magazine. She was also selected as one of ten artists to participate in a special concert tribute to Joni Mitchell at the International World Leaders Conference, where Ember's performance received high praise, including a rave review from Ms. Mitchell's official web site.

As well as being a highly accomplished musician, performer and composer, who successfully runs her own business, Ember is well known as a committed activist. Her credibility for insightful social commentary was recognized when she was asked by MP Bill Graham (now Canada's Minister for Foreign Affairs) to submit a brief to the parliamentary commission examining the country's post September 11th security legislation.

A genuinely compelling and uncompromising performer, Ember and her band have toured extensively throughout North America and Australia, averaging nearly 200 shows per year. And as can be testified to by her devoted following, an Ember Swift show promises a rockin' good time, with sheer fun as important an ingredient as her extraordinary voice and unflinching lyrics.

Native of both Burlington, Ontario (Canada) and Woodstock, Ontario (Canada), and now a resident of Toronto, Ember is a self-taught guitarist and percussionist, as well as a trained pianist. Ember Swift is best described as a brilliant jazz vocalist inhabiting the body of an alternative-folk singer-songwriter.

I heard Lyndell & Ember at an outdoor concert and they just blew everyone else away at the festival, in my opinion. The songs are original, and topics of them cause some major neuronal activity!

Disarming is mind-blowing good! Definitely sounds sophisticated and has smooth transitions between genres.... Great political lyrics, such great energy... Lyndell and Ember are tight and sound wonderful together. Pek is inspired by East Asia, and is a great instrumental song.

  • Intelligent songs laced with jazz, folk, new age, and ethnic influences.

Remember the days of CSN, Dylan, and, before them, The Weavers and Woody Guthrie, the days before the airwaves were gobbled up by the conglomerate beacons of radical-right dogma? Today, to get a major contract or get your music heard on-air, you gotta whine, gotta homogenize, gotta sing lyrics that, more or less, bemoan your (or someone else's) tragic love life. Sick of it? Enter the independent scene and groups such as the Ember Swift band, affording intelligent songs of protest and human experience laced with jazz, folk, new age, and ethnic influences. Good music, soulful songs, great band. If you can see the Ember Swift band in concert, do. Support diversity and intelligent music by supporting the band with the purchase of their CDs, such as the excellent live CD, The Wage is the Stage, and their latest, Disarming.
