notes

American Troubadour marks the 4th release for singer/songwriter Elton Costello. This is an acoustic release featuring 10 songs inspired around the time of the 911 events.

"I wanted to create something that expressed my love for the United States without coming off with too much opinion on political issues," said Elton Costello. "I recorded them in a simple way. I placed a microphone on top of the piano and performed the songs direct to a cd burner."

The amazing thing is that the quality of the songwriting takes over and in many instances the listener forgets how simply the music was recorded. The vocal is both distinctive and on key. There are many times during the listening of the disc you might say.... "Damn, why haven't I heard of this guy before? These are great songs."

Early on in Elton Costello's career he was asked over and over again to produce his tunes with additional instrumenation in order for it to be "shopped." This is his way of saying that not every song needs to be fully produced. "Sometimes it's a treat to have an intimate moment getting to hear an honest performance.
American Troubadour provides just that opportunity.

  • Great music to just kick back with.

This CD was very good and was the first one I had heard by this artist. Each song is different on its own yet together there is a common thread throughout the album. The music is great but doesnt overpower the singer. The singers strong voice is able to shine through on each and every song.

  • Great music for chillin at home or drivin' somewhere to get away.

My favorite Elton Costello song is "Ohio Highway." There's other great ones on this CD. "Boston" always takes me back to one of my favorite New England towns. "Get Out Of Your Way" I find inspirational. This is a simple recording featuring piano and voice and I guess that is why this remains one of my favorite recordings of all time. I can feel what it would be like sitting in a room next to the artist and every song is really good. That in itself is rare these days. Get it for yourself. You'll enjoy it. Don't be surprised if you find yourself coming back for the full catalog. I know I did.
