notes

Eleven Eyes is:
Tim McLaughlin: trumpet, flugelhorn, effects
Matt Calkins: tenor and soprano saxophones
Mike Pardew: guitar
Dave Tenkel: bass, keyboards, electronics
Steve Weems: drums, drum programming
The Turntable Enabler: turntables, sampler, live effects manipulation

"Eleven Eyes' sound is funk updated for 2003...DJ scratching prominently over a laid-back, often Latin, groove...Electronics drop in more often than not and horns are given the occasional dub treatment, to atmospheric effect. The only thing left unaccounted for is further explanation of that band name."
-Arts & Entertainment, The Oregonian

"Eleven Eyes builds a towering inferno of intermeshing licks of flame . . . they provide enough pulse to accelerate the beating of hearts, and yet enough disparate layers to give brains a nitro boost."
-The Entertainer, Corvallis Gazette Times

"Eleven Eyes is a fresh new sound of funk, jazz, and hip-hop."
-Arts &Entertainment, The LBCC Commuter

"Just to see the six-piece on stage is wonderous enough. But to hear the music flow out of them . . . you can‚t help but stop, listen and groove."
-A&E Calendar, The OSU Daily Barometer

Eleven Eyes is a 6-piece instrumental band that draws on a wide range of influences from the innovative fusion of Herbie Hancock (whose composition "Maiden Voyage" appears, in a drum 'n bass arrangement) and Miles Davis to the instrumental hip hop of artists like DJ Shadow, DJ Spooky and DJ Logic, to electronic artists such as Amon Tobin and Squarepusher.

Based in Eugene, Oregon, Eleven Eyes performs regularly around the Northwest. Depth Perception is their first CD.

  • I played this so much, it wore out

OMG! One of the few CD's I have actually bought. Intense grooves that you cannot help but get involved in. A fresh turn on drum & bass, fusion and jazz that got me absolutely hooked. Steve Weems you are my HERO!!!

  • New, refreshing and fantastic real jazz for the new century.
    author: Loz (anotherworldmusic)

This is something special, real jazz music. I say real jazz because, like the best jazz music of the last century, this is social commentary, a sign of the times, not the regurgitated, dilluted crap that is so often passed off for 'jazz'. This is expressed not only by the clever use of George W. speech samples on the track '052402' but the also by the original and angular flavour of the compositions, the dynamic brass arrangements and a lot more besides - check it for yourself, the new sound jazz has been waiting for.

great CD for hanging out and washing the dishes or stumbling around in a fuzzy blur. great job of taking their writhing, live dynamics out of the air and into plastic. hooked on 052402.

  • A fuck em in the face type of band
    author: Dusty Daly

The band rocks! The DJ adds a flair to the evolution of Jazz. The CD Depth Perception is great, but to see them live makes you want to cream your jeans. Be sure to bring an extra pair of panties with ya! Seriously!

  • This CD is a trip well worth taking.

I liked this CD a lot. While bursting with talent, style and good writing, Eleven Eyes uses these things to bring you in, and to take you on an imaginiteve journey without burdening you with pretentiousness or exhaustive pomp. There are many great standouts, but the flavors are diverse enough to allow each listener to find their own. Big Dig and Theme to a Down are my favorites, but if you give this whole CD a listen, you will likely find your own. Check it out. Its a trip worth taking.

  • Inovative, solid grooves, tight well written horn lines, great turntables!
    author: D.J. Monroe

The group Eleven Eyes and their CD Depth Perception is a refreshing blend of old and new school sounds in the jazz, fusion, funk and hip-hop vein. It has solid inovative bass grooves accented with tight syncopated drumming. The horn arrangements are creative and tightly executed. The guitar work fits the music well without being over or understated. The icing on this project however is the use of turntables, samples, analog sounds and live effects mixing. I would recommend this CD to anyone looking for a fresh new jazz sound. Very Pro! Mixed well and sounds great on headphones. If you live in the Pacific Northwest and have an opportunity to catch Eleven Eyes live you'll be in for a real treat.
