notes
It's true, elaine k has just released the long awaited and ridiculously anticipated follow up album to her debut album, yeah, really. The artist described as "incendiary from start to finish", "relentless" and "unafraid to give" with performances described as "&*#@ing awesome!" and "kicks ass!" has gone and done it again! This sophomore release (printed on recycled packaging as per elaine k instructions) hosts great original pop & rock songs like Not About You, Seduce Me and The Ballad as well as the more bluesy & jazzy Just Me and Soft Skin. It also contains live tracks taken from NYC performances that will have the fans screaming at the sound of their own screaming!

"An excellent addition to anyone's collection!"
author: Niamh Ni ChearbhaillLets take a look at elaine k's recently released album “as is”, which is selling like hot-cakes. In fact the initial production run sold out in under a month! This album, a mix of funk rock, jazz, blues, and… well… elainek, is at once tumultuous, powerful, peaceful and relaxing. I’m reminded of a good classical CD where one minute you’re drawn into a storm of emotion and the next you’re caressed into a dream. I played “as is” for a few people and some of the comments that came back were “who is that and where can I get a copy?” “…reminds me of latter day Joni Mitchell” and “no, don’t turn it off, turn it up”. From the smooth and slinky jazz sound of “Soft Skin” to the foot-tapping hand clapping feel of “That Kiss”, this album has an even more professional and cohesive sound than her debut release. “The Ballad” puts you in a Pink Floyd, Dark Side of The Moon zone. Calm, but anticipatory, lulls follow raw and disturbing emotional gusts of sound. As usual elainek‘s lyrics command the listener‘s attention. I found “I will not fight your war” to be one of the best songs so far inspired by 9/11 and the resulting politics. Though, this song could be taken to refer to any violence or war. “…I will not support your quest for domination and I will not believe that this arrogance is nature.” “…I will not choose weapons over words.” “Cause I still believe, in love and in peace…” “Lucky” is dedicated to the survivors in NYC. This song, however, could just as easily be about how anyone feels when someone they love dies and they are left wondering ‘why that person and not me?’. “Lucky as I am, I don’t feel so lucky.” The beauty of elainek’s lyrics is that they have universal appeal, and no two people will derive quite the same interpretation from any given song. Imagine two people who are totally into each other but for whatever reason, baggage, shyness, whatever, they do not express that passion. “Seduce me” captures all that delicious tension and atmosphere. And for all those over enthusiastic groupies out there, there is “Kiss” dedicated to her stalkers! I’ll let that one speak for itself. So, to recap, unrequited love, war and peace, lust, romantic love, stalker crushes, loss of innocence, and universal love! This new album is miles ahead of her last and would be an excellent addition to anyone’s collection.
"The disc in its entirety is a great listen."
author: CompgeekgirlWe've had a bit of a folk explosion here at South of Mainstream (not to be confused with Lou Barlow's Folk Implosion), which means we've been receiving a lot of folk CDs. In my book that's pretty okay, especially since we've received some really great recordings, especially by female artists. I tend to prefer female folk singers to male...just my specific preference. Elaine K is one of those folk artists. Defining Elaine K as a strictly "folk" artist would be a great misnomer. While she does have the overall appeal and folksiness of the genre, she adds some blues and jazz style and appeal, as well as a pop dynamic. She can also rock out. Her vocals have the "at home" friendliness of a folk recording, but have the strength and range to branch out into jazzier numbers that would test the pipes of many folk singers we've reviewed. I guess I'm rambling...because while other sites and reviewers describe her as a rock artist, I'm going to take a gamble and call her a folk rock artist. In a time when CD sites are making up subgenres like "angry folk" and "like Ani folk", it's nice to find a recording that touches on several subgenres without staying too long at any one, but at the same time not sounding like the artist is throwing everything, including the kitchen sink, into the mix. Elaine K manages to bring both a sense of cohesiveness and a mildly eclectic jumbled appeal to her disc at the same time. No easy feat. There are no tracks that grab you by the throat...but not every disc needs to have one of those tracks. This disc wraps its arms around you slowly, drawing you in...enticing you to listen to its conclusion. Sometimes disc with that one "stand-out" song are fairly disappointing as a whole. Not so here. The disc in its entirety is a great listen. At times smoky, at times sunny...it reflects the many moods of the singer and will fit the many moods of the listener. Enjoy.
