Anyone who has even a passing knowledge of my musical preferences knows that I have a soft spot for rock music - classic or modern. It was a real pleasure coming across a band like the Ty Kaufman Group on Soundclick over the past year. Just in case you are a bit confused, the Ty Kaufman Group is now called (enigmatically enough) EL84. Ty and the gang keep us rock junkies going through 2004 with some very classy slices of music, along the way gaining a Hot listing of 2004 AND a track of the year in 'Why' from this reviewer. See, told you I was a sucker for good rock music didn't I? It helps immensely, of course, that Ty is a singularly effective lead guitarist backed up with some very serious musical muscle. I've seen their work compared to any number of rock giants and I think I'd agree with most of them. What really comes across though is the direct lineage to their rock roots all the while bringing their own dimension to it. The last time I looked the group consisted of Ty on guitar, Steve Calapp (vocals), Kevin Grant (bass) and Amado Tuazon on drums, but I don't know whether that lineup has moved under this new name. Judging from One World, I should hazard a guess and say yes, because there is a certain tightness about the sound and structure of the track that comes from being a living, breathing, working rock band. Endless nights of playing does tend to sharpen up the ol' skills centers exceptionally well. One World has that rock classic feel all the way through it, from the opening guitar riffs, the very accomplished and powerful vocal and the rock solid feel of the bass and drums. Everything in its' right right place then? Yep, and then some. Pilesar commented somewhere that it reminded him of Kansas and I'd have to agree in some way. For me though, the power of the song and the meaning of the lyrics hearkens back to a much earlier period when rock music had fire in its belly rather than flashy fingerwork. Speaking of which, Ty is on top form on this track, wailing like a good 'un. 2005 looks like being a good year for EL84 and if there is a God in heaven someone, somewhere will sign them... Highly Recommended - quality rock. Steve Gilmore

  • All the way around, top notch playing.

"Great arrangement to the tunes, and as a guitar player, well, the leads knock me out. Your drummer can't be left out of the equation of course. Monster player. All the way around, top notch playing. Lots of artists on the web, but few stand out like you do."

With a mad mix of Rush and ... well ... Rush, EL84's "One World" is probably one of the most rocking tracks I've had a chance to hear since reviewing here at HitClick. These guys are definitely"Arena Rock" -- great movements, changes and performances make "One World" a strong candidate for whatever kind of award HitClick gives out for this kind of thing in the future. In a strange, strange world of dark politics and the looming cant of war, "One World" is an epic rock sentiment to the sweeping changes taking place in the world today. With a firm political stance and an awesome, awesome guitar solo, this track will have your lazy behind out of that cushy computer chair you're probably sitting in and banging your head with a pretend guitar. Me, I like to work on a milk crate in my underwear to keep up the tension. This California four piece definitely has a place in the future of prog rock. This track was brilliantly recorded, possibly live. I seriously can't imagine that this was tracked out -- the bass comes through strong and clear, and the guitar tone on the leads is amazing. Everything is well produced, definitely well performed, and with all the trappings of any major studio recording. AND they've got a really cool video. THE CONCLUSION?: Ladies and gentlemen, please get out your lighters and prepare to rock. Naked. Stone Bayliss HitClick Staff Reviewer
