If Argentina were ruled by a monarchy, Enrique Ibarguren would be king. Born into an aristocratic family of the purest lineage, his passion for music made him a bohemian during his youth. As a teenager in the 50s he was already listening to the Hi-Los and Marty Paich's Tentette and transferring all those harmonies to his piano to be mixed with his impeccable solos.
Other influences in later years were Victor Feldman, Art Tatum, João Donato and Clare Fischer. With other bohemians of his time like (twice Oscar® nominee and Grammy® winner) Jorge Calandrelli and Fernando Gelbard (former Argentinean Ambassador to France) he played, listened and had fun. He has always been an exemplary husband and father. Nowadays Enrique works as a pianist at two (what else!) of the most distinguished places in Buenos Aires: the Claridge Hotel and the exclusive Jockey Club.
This album is the brainchild of jazz producer Fernando Gelbard and London's John Cooper, jazz maker extraordinaire. The recipe is simple: some great jazz standards, a superb rhythm section to add some spice:
Oscar Giunta Jr., drums and Guillermo Delgado, bass, and a team of recording engineers of the highest taste and skills: Grammy® winners Carlos Piriz and Laura Fonzo. An Argentinean composer, Sergio Mihanovich, who wrote the jazz standard "Sometime Ago" recorded by Bill Evans and others, lent the tune that gives this album its name.
There is also "Amazonas" by Brazilian swingmeister and friend João Donato and "Flowers" by Fernando Gelbard, Enrique's friend since 1954 and producer of this album. The other songs are well known jazz standards, some are played piano solo and some with the rhythm section as you can see in the detailed list on the back cover.

author: John PlacitoEvery song is so beautifully done and to hear those standards played so melodically by Mr. Ibarguen is a pleasure. I especially like Amazonas which I ofter hit the repeat button.It's a timeless treasure.I'm waiting for his next CD. Please let me know.
