notes
Sadila Moma (The Girl Was Planting) showcases Mila Vocal Ensemble's remarkable vocal strength. Singing in native languages, both a cappella and accompanied by native instruments, these nine highly acclaimed female vocalists employ astonishing vocal techniques unique to each country.
Mila Vocal Ensemble's repertoire consists of folk music from over 30 different cultures. They specialize in Eastern European songs, however their full repertoire includes music from all over Europe, North America, and Asia. The vocal styles within these cultures are as varied as the cultures themselves.
The artists strive for authenticity and have studied with renowned masters from Bulgaria, Hungary, Tibet, Ukraine, Spain and the United States. Mila Vocal Ensemble draws material from firsthand sources, field recordings and rare songbooks. They are also fortunate that some of their members hail from Latvia, Serbia and Ukraine. Such training, research and insight have assisted Mila's vocalists to accurately present a plethora of heritages and hone already precise vocal and pronunciation skills.
Mila has collaborated with other performing groups and has conducted workshops with other choirs as part of their committment to foster awareness and understanding of world cultures through the presentation of traditional ethnic music.

Unlike most Impulse Purchases.
author: Priestess j'nI heard this group on A Prairie Home Companion and immediately and impulsively bought this at CD Baby. Often such purchases result in one or two cuts that I enjoy and the rest is wasted. Not so with this album. The collection holds up throughout with a relaxing, empowering, feminine, world feel which comes in handy in my office in a suite of mostly macho wingnuts.
Penetrating, fresh, just what I wanted!
author: Eclectic EyeI feel heroic to be able to help this group any way that I can. The professionalism they show in being true to their culture, and the care they use to recreate others is inspiring!
Haunting!
author: TraderTifI enojyed this CD very much. They have a very haunting sound, and a wonderful blend of voices.
Pennywhistlers reincarnate!
author: Sally JenkinsPerfect blend of voices. The sound reminded me instantly of The Pennywhistlers. And THEN I heard the song "Uyezhal Daloka Milyi"--in the same arrangement that Pearl Rottenberg and the NAMA Orchestra performed it. What a powerful song! All the passionate yearning that goes into the singing is underlined by the faithful solid chugging away of the accordion during the interludes. I could listen to this CD all day long.
