notes

Influenced by traditional and contemporary folk/roots resonances, Natalie Edelson seamlessly meshes the human and physical extremes of the Yukon landscape. Oscillating from the mundane to the whimsical through all points in between, her songs poignantly distill the off-the-grid experiences shared by urban refugees. Richly textured melodies envelop stark imagery. The result particularly satisfies those with a craving for something bittersweet.

Born in Ottawa and politicized in Montreal, Natalie Edelson made the Yukon her home in 1991. A musical journey that began with flute and piano has since gravitated towards acoustic and electric guitar. Her fluid and innovative fingerstyle guitarwork is reminiscent of rhythm and melody piano-hands. Performing solo or with accompaniment, Natalie Edelson creates and maintains a unique intimacy with her riveted audience.

Natalie Edelson's debut, self-released CD Mayfly Days traces the topography of her 14-year "visit" to the Yukon. The 13-song chronicle of a self-proclaimed urban refugee is an auditory journey traversing exalted peaks and introspective valleys: a soundscape that glimmers. Produced and engineered by Jay Burr, mastered by Juno award winner Bob Hamilton: Mayfly Days features performances by some of the Yukon's finest players as well as guest appearances by guitarists David Sinclair and Forrest Gibson. Two live-off-the-floor tracks highlight Edelson's acuity as a solo performer.

Natalie Edelson lives in a cabin without electricity or running water. Her favourite cabin sound is the ting of wood splitting at -30.

Natalie Edelson is simply brilliant in her debut CD. Outstanding music, every track is just a pure joy to listen to. Rich lyrics and very well produced - I find myself quoting the song lyrics to friends, and no day is complete without listening to this work.

A strong, distinctive voice with well-written material and perfect complimenting background music and audio. Good to know such talent exists in the Yukon.

The imagery is so vivid that every song is a video in my head when I close my eyes...can't you see yourself chasing a giggling toddler down the hall in the fading light listening to Into Deep Blue?

....listening to this album is like hanging out in the sun on a late summer afternoon with an old friend and talking about life. I especially love the song 'Nameless Wonder'. Congratulations to Edelson on a fabulous album!

Mayfly Days is a beautiful CD. Edelson's lyrics catch snapshots of life, her melodies stick in your head, her voice is at times playful and at other moments it is wistful and evocative. An incredible cover of the Rolling Stones "Wild Horses" is nestled in amongst cleverly written and produced original tracks. This album will have you humming to yourself long after you've turned off the stereo.

A wide variety of music and lyrical subjects encourage excitment to see what the next track will bring. The songs range from introspective allegorical tracks to fun loving tracks about daily life. The whole album flows beautifully. Listen and enjoy

  • clever lyrics, great production, funny and sad, cool guitar

I loved this CD - especially the songs Grey on Grey and title track Mayfly Days. (I was all-weepy but in cool punk rock sort of way)There is a 70s Rolling Stones-feel to this album (and not just on Wild Horses). I like being outsmarted by lyrics and bedazzled/intrigued by music. This album is not boring! I liked the finer points of the production as well.. both the music and the beautiful package. 5 STARS.
