notes

[ L.; Gr. Echoset, a sound, a noise]: an intense creative fusion of modern rock and alternative music, deeply laced with insightful lyrics and finely crafted musical compositions. A melding which showcases the unique talents of each member of the Austin-based band. During the taping of Comedy Central's "Insomniac", host Dave Attell had this to say about his 'echoset experience': "Austin really is the music capital of the USA. The town is crawling with musicians and dreams. Here I am hanging out with some future stars of tomorrow, [echoset]... you guy's, by the way, rock! That was amazing!" The episode, which aired in July of 2003, represented Austin's famous music scene, featuring echoset as its live band. Echoset's roots began in a friend's garage in January of 2000, when native East Coasters, Beth Puorro (vocals, guitar) and Rae Goldring (bass), began to jam with one another. A few months later they teamed up with native Texans, Travis Cohee (guitar, backing vocals) and Michael Hayden (drums), to collaborate on the project now known as echoset. Like a soulful gypsy, Puorro has mastered the art of vocally seducing crowds until they get lost in the moment; a moment into which Cohee breathes life with his innovative and blistering guitar riffs. With Goldring's ability to lay down palpable and hypnotic bass licks, and Hayden's focus solely on 'tending to the groove', the 'echoset experience' thrusts listeners into a wondrous world of pulsating emotion and climatic energy. Voted one of Austin's top rock bands by the Chronicle in 2002 & 2003, echoset has accomplished much in their three short years together. They have shared the stage with some of the most talented national and regional acts, including Michelle Shocked, Dada, The Burden Brothers, Patrice Pike and the Blackbox Rebellion (formerly Sister 7), Bob Schneider, and numerous others, (see complete list on Fact sheet). A band that is both socially and politically conscious, echoset was asked to join other top acts on Jim Hightower's "Rolling Thunder Downhome Democracy Tour", and echoset regularly appears at charity events throughout the region. Motivated and driven, echoset has independently released two albums, both financial and critical successes that have enabled the band to successfully tour the West Coast three times in the past 12 months. By touring the West Coast and Texas region tirelessly, they have continually increased their fan base in multiple markets. Echoset's skillful songwriting and electrifying stage performance results in something akin to a sound-induced energy epidemic in their appreciative crowds. In the summer of 2004 echoset will embark on their first United Kingdom tour, under the direction of Michael Farady. Echoset is a force to be reckoned with and we anticipate exciting things for these 'future stars of tomorrow'.

  • Echoset swim in an intense, swirling pool of melody, dark atmosphere, and sensuo
    author: David Elliott

ECHOSET - MILE MARKER FOUR (www.echoset.com) Austin-based Echoset swim in an intense, swirling pool of melody, dark atmosphere, and sensuous vocals on their current release Mile Marker Four. Sure, the band can be classified under the ubiquitous "alternative/modern rock" signet, and that's no disservice. In fact, Echoset is a fine example of the label, as opposed to most of the typical bands that crap out the genre. The band conjurs up a sombre feel throughout the record. The opening song, "Pinwheel," a pulsating moody number drawing on U2-ish guitar harmonics, courtesy of Beth Puorro and Travis Cohee, with lead vocals by Puorro, sets the tone for the entire disk. Puorro retains a vocal style reminiscent of PJ Harvey, without that singer's histrionics, while Cohee offers up nice harmony vocals, as evidenced on "Maurice." While the band is indeed immersed in dark shadows, they do rock, as on the slightly punkish "Learning Curve," wherein the intensity is delivered via the lyrics. Puorro opens the song conjuring up an image of sexual violence, while at the same time singing the praises of old age ("He spits and grabs my hand as I pass by him/ The wisdom of his years goes passing through my veins/ And though I fear this man, I need his elder brains."). The band offers up a slightly different take on the spooky sonics in "Shade," where Cohee's wah-wah guitar joins bassist Rae Goldring and drummer Mike Hayden in the rhythym. The band's best quality is their sense of melody. The sweeping interplay between Cohee and Puorro's guitars, like waves of beautiful sadness, keep melody and harmony in delicate balance (listen to the closing number "Amnesia Moon"). Sure the record harkens the soaring drive of Meloncollie era Smashing Pumpkins, but doesn't become quagmired in mid-90's "alternative" (as say Melissa Auf der Maur does on her debut). Cohee even provides a little guitar-god rock in the flaminco inspired instrumental "Cardona." It's nice to hear a guitarist evoke feel while maintaing intelligence in his playing. This band just knows how to stick to rhythym, drive, melody and it's own sense of complexity. If only such emo drivel like Dashboard Confessional could figure all this out, they might actually matter. In the end the whole "alternative/modern rock" category has pretty much become a mish-mash of emo whine, angst, and "let's play goth" pop goofiness (can't you just hear Avril Lavigne crying "you mean I'm not 'goth'?!?"). Just turn on the Edge on any given day to hear the overwraught mess the genre has become. But every now and then a band attempts to cut through the boredom of the genre. Echoset seems to be just one of those bands.

  • Mile Marker Four is one of the year's top albums, don't be one of those who miss
    author: Todd West

ECHOSET - Mile Marker Four Echoset are a really cool band. They have strong melody running throughout all levels of their sound, plus a world class rock singer in Beth Puorro. They mix some vintage alternative with a definite country and blues root style underlying thing, while using classic american arena rock push to make it all happen. Travis Cohee can rip some lead man! The songwriting is great, "Maurice" puts in edge in an otherwise reflective number, and the sonic groove and wah guitar enrich the underlying psychedelia of "Shade". Think Surrealistic Pillow era stuff in some smoke choked mexican bar, it's smooth man. The band kicks it hardest on rockers like "Pinwheel" and the uptempo "Learning Curve", displaying their undeniable energy. There's some more spanish flemenco with a strong persian vibe happening on "Cardona", it sounds like some banditos on the run. Echoset get close to the power rock generation as they tear it up on "Middletown", an easy platter burner down at the broadcast stations. Listen to the emotion in "Flooded Land", which is a defining character of Echoset, even when they hard the hardest, they retain that emotive quality, both vocally and musically. Mile Marker Four is one of the year's top albums, don't be one of those who missed it. Contact: Fusion Productions, 305 W. 55th Street, Austin, Texas 78751 (512) 423-5011, http://www.echoset.com

  • Review of the Song Pinwheel, From Mile Marker Four
    author: Garageband.com

Your song had me from the beginning, with that cool intro. What really kept my attention, however, was the emotional intensity of both the vocal and the song as a whole. The guitar player (players?) get kudos for their melodic, trippy lines throughout, and the solo is simultaneously scorching hot and tasteful. But just to single out the vocal and guitars would be an injustice! Everything in this song works and works well. The Drummer really rips the skins at the end of the song, and the bass line provides the solid foundation for all the instruments riffing over it. To sum up this song in one word: "riveting." To sum up the technical, yet tasteful musicianship in one word: "Excellent."
