notes
Goodbye Planet Earth is a rock-solid, complete work in 17 movements. Not just a mere collection of singles, Matthew’s fourth solo album is a journey that takes the listener on an outer-space adventure. The album is a noted departure from Matthew’s typical organic feel, combining highly electronic elements like synthesizers and loops with raw vocals, pianos, pennywhistles, and more. True to Matthew Ebel style, however, Goodbye Planet Earth contains songs that will make you laugh, sing along, or break out in goose bumps. Be warned, however, you may not be able to get most of the songs out of your head for weeks.
He’s been called a soulful white guy, an acoustic geek-rocker, and the love child of Elton John and Billy Joel. His fans know him as everything from Matthew to Birdman to simply “Hot Wings”. Whatever you call him, though, Matthew Ebel is more than just a singer-songwriter, he’s a space pirate captain that takes his fans and friends beyond the mundane.
Born in the Pacific Northwest, Matthew Ebel has spent all of his life singing and playing the piano. Starting off with fifteen years of piano lessons, six years of private voice, and over a decade of concert choirs and bands, he began his serious music career at Whitworth College. He earned his B.A. with honors in Music and spent an extra year building up a reputation in the Inland Northwest as an up-and-coming new artist.
In the spring of 2002 Matthew crammed all of his stuff into a tiny UHAUL trailer and dragged it behind his car to Nashville. A little more than a year later he found himself playing the Grand Ole Opry with Mercury Records artist Billy Currington. He also performed with a number of local acts including The Peter Moon Band and Laura Clapp. He’s also produced custom music and audio for companies like Porter Novelli and crayon.
As a testament to the power of an independent artist, his album Beer & Coffee came into being with little more than a Macintosh computer and some help from Matthew’s devoted friends. Once the album was completed, Matthew turned to emerging new mediums to spread the word - namely podcasting and Second Life. Thanks to the power of the music and the pioneering spirit of podcasters, Matthew’s reputation quickly spread across the globe as one of the biggest names in new media music.

Magnificent
author: Nicholas YoungPop-inspired piano rock? The name itself conjures up funky, hot riffs - backed by a glassy smooth rhythm - and a talented vocalist on top. If this is what you imagine, then you're in for a treat. Many have said, and I agree, that this is Ebel's magnum-opus; bringing all of the aforementioned assets to the table, but with each track, adding the unexpected: gentle electronic accents. Climb aboard Ebel's ship, and join him on an awesome intergalactic adventure!
The earth concept
author: Stephan FleckWell it took me 3 times to discover this album but now Matthew got me again ! An awesome musician with a wonderful concept album ! GREAT JOB !
Matthew Ebel Rocks!
author: RachelMickey, my husband, asked for this for Christmas. We both had the pleasure of meeting Matthew at a convention and he is a great, down to earth, kooky guy and very talented to boot. I personally enjoyed Everybody Needs A Ninja and Everybody Needs a Robot. CD Baby made purchasing this CD easy and shipping was quick as it arrived for Christmas! Thank you! :)
A Very Enjoyable Album
author: Michael SimmonsThis album is quite an entertaining listen! It clocks in at a bit over an hour, so you get your money's worth. The songs are catchy and the melodies are great. There's a bunch of different styles on it, from the more serious "Better Off Dead" and "A Cautionary Tail" to the comedic "Everybody Needs A Robot". You'll be hooked!
Amazing album
author: Lynette YoungDo yourself a favor and GET THIS ALBUM. And pick up a few more for everyone you know. You'll find yourself humming these songs all day long. From the whimsical songs "Everybody Needs A Robot/Ninja" to more modern-day, thought-provoking tunes as "Join the Conversation" & "Goodbye Planet Earth", every song will hit home in some way. My personal favorites are "A Cautionary Tail" and "She Will Set You Free".
This is What an Album is Supposed to Sound Like!
author: Zack DaggyI've been a Matthew Ebel fan for awhile. As such I of course expected this album to be incredibly awesome, but it has well surpassed all my expectations! This is quite easily now one of my all time favorite albums. Right up there with The White Album, Dark Side of The Moon, and Bat Out of Hell.
Awesome songs!
author: Les ZalewskiThis album is a must have is you enjoy pop piano songs with a twist! Matthew writes songs that you *want* to listen to the whole way through to see what's next! This is a great 'concept' album and well worth listening from track 1 to track 17! Favorite Songs: "Goodbye Planet Earth", "Lost My Way", and "Everybody Needs a Robot"
Matthew's melodies are infectious!
author: Jim FarleyYou CAN NOT GO WRONG with this CD. The worst part of this whole album is getting some of the songs out of your head! Song after song takes you on a flight that's out of this world... I change favorites every other day becuase they're all so good! Do yourself a favor and grab this one up! You'll also love his other albums... especially BEER AND COFFEE...
Say hello to Goodbye Planet Earth
author: Justin RussellIn an age where the concept of an album is all but lost among a sea of 99-cent MP3 tracks, Matthew Ebel delivers a welcome journey back to times when music told a story. Goodbye Planet Earth is a wonderful collection of music that will have you listening, singing, humming, and dancing for days on end. If you've heard Matthew before, check out "Lost My Way", "Goodbye Planet Earth", and "Downtown" for his familiar and catchy songwriting. Dive deeper by listening to Matthew's diverse talent on everything from the expansive "A Cautionary Tale" to the instrumental "Gray Planet" and "Falling to Earth". When you're done, give the album a complete listen from "Better Off Dead" and "I Just Want to Fall in Love" (my personal favorite) to "I Will Wait for You" for a wonderful musical experience. You'll find yourself listening again and again.
Matthew Ebel does it again!
author: Daniel Johnson, Jr.I've heard "Lost My Way" and "Every Color" on other podcasts, but the final versions on the album make it well worth buying. The instrumentals provide a great interlude for the other songs. Very catchy hooks all over the place. Great lyrics, too. I can't pick a favorite song off this album. Even at 17 tracks, it ends too soon.
Hello Matthew Ebel!
author: CrystalThis album is by far one of the most creative ventures I've ever had the pleasure of listening to. Biting wit and sly observation rule Matthew's lyrics, but the sheer inventiveness and mind-blowing musicianship won me over. These songs are definitely a departure from "Beer and Coffee," but once you go beyond the stylistic differences, you'll find all of the things that make Matthew's music worth playing on constant repeat. For those that love slow builds to expansive sounds, "She Will Set You Free" and "I Will Wait for You" are must-haves. If you're in it for the lyrics, I can't think of anything I've heard that's quite as clever as "Lost My Way" (an a cappella gem, to boot), or as moving as "A Cautionary Tail." "Join the Conversation" and the title track, "Goodbye Planet Earth," are great for setting on an infinite loop and just dancing like a nut. Finally, for those that simply enjoy quiet, clean composition without lyrics, "Gray Planet" is simply lovely and very relaxing. There is something in this album for everyone, and I hope others enjoy it even half as much as I have.
Goodbye Planet Earth is required listening!
author: Christopher Penn, Financial Aid PodcastMash up an intergalactic space opera with pop and rock, and you get Goodbye Planet Earth. Imagine Ben Folds and Wil Wheaton collaborating on an album and you get where this could take you. I've owned it since PodCamp Boston and have never actually removed it from my CD player since. Top recommended track: I Will Wait For You. This track is something special. The whole album is good, but this is the finishing touch that makes it all worth it.
Ebel Delivers the Goods Again
author: C.C. ChapmanMatthew Ebel is known for his piano pop hooks that stick in your brain long after you turn off the music and this album is no different. Rather then an album full of singles this is truly one complete album all tied together and presented in a candy coated space opera of sorts that you are sure to enjoy. Just be warned that songs such as "Everyone Needs a Robot" and "Goodbye Planet Earth" will have you singing their catchy choruses for days.
