notes

"Elizabeth & the Catapult have managed to hurl themselves pretty far through word-of-mouth buzz. The unsigned local trio, led by vocalist Elizabeth Ziman and her Aimee Mann–like drawl, has built a loyal local fanbase via jazzy, buoyant pop songs; they're now making frequent appearances on NPR's Studio 360. Check out jaunty earworm "Momma's Boy," off their self-titled EP—these three won't be flying under the radar for long." -The Village Voice

"The self-assured Elizabeth and the Catapult prove what a sultry-voiced Greenwich Village habitue with a Norah Jones jones should do: Just let it flow" -The Boston Globe

"The jazzy/funky voice of Elizabeth and the Catapult's Elizabeth Ziman caught my ear immediately, their "Waiting for the Kill" is one of the discs standouts." -Pop Matters

Elizabeth wrote her first song at six, banging out melodies on an old upright in a Greenwhich Village laundry room. A born romantic, Elizabeth transformed the music of Chopin and Debussy, molding it to the driving rhythms of the washer and dryer. With Debussy on her left and the Beatles just to her right, Elizabeth quickly developed a sound all her own. The Catapult's "Baroque Pop" songs have frequently been compared to those of Rufus Wainright, David Byrne and Leslie Feist.

Elizabeth received the ASCAP Leiber and Stoller award in 2001 for her song “Like Water is to Sand”. For two years, she toured across the U.S. with Patti Austin, who kicked off her tour at Lincoln Center in 2003.
The Catapult has performed a whole bunch in New York, Boston and LA (faves include Rockwood Music Hall, Joe's Pub, The Paradise, Hotel Cafe). And have promoted their EP on NPR's Soundcheck, Studio 360 and Fair Game w/Faith Salie.

Recently purchased your CD after hearing you on NPR and LOVE IT except it is TOO SHORT (I’m gonna wear out those grooves in no time), so I really really hope you have another one in the works. It’s one of the best CDs I’ve heard in a while; some songs are reminiscent of the very moody music that came out of Moulin Rouge. Hope you are enjoying doing what you are doing ‘cause it really is enjoyable from this side. And sometime you might think about an eastern tour (I take it you folks are out midwestsouthsouthwestwaywaywest somewhere), like all the way to southern vermont.

Loved this CD. It flows with beautiful melodies and arrangements, poignant lyrics. Her voice is a cross between Sarah Maclaughlin and Jem. Wish the CD was longer than only 6 songs.

  • Great voice
    author: Suk Yi

I saw them perform at Carnegie Hall as part of the Young People's Chorus of NYC. They sang Devil's Calling. I thought it was fantastic and searched for the CD. Glad I got it, I play it all the time. Great album.

My son tipped me off to this album. Checked out the tracks and said yeah, it's okay, then went back a few days later listened again, and it clicked. My main musical interest is jazz and this recording has definite jazz influence, but it's more than that. It's music you can fully embrace.

This is a really great sound, i heard you on 90.1 to begin with and liked you enough to buy the CD. I hope yourstyle will always be fresh and you have just as enjoyable music in the future. It's music for the soul

I don't think I've ever listened to another cd this much ever. The music is rich with melody and feeling. It allows you to experience so many meaningful emotions from love to jealousy to despair to regret -all in only 6 songs!

  • Unbridled
    author: Solomon Umberger

EATCatapult is simply unstoppable. There is nothing negative about any of the songs on the CD, and Elizabeth has the capacity to evoke my emotions whether I like it or not.

This is by far one of my favorite CD's ever. I really enjoy the way the songs flow on the album, as well as the lyrics, melodies, and instrumentation. From one musician to another, thank you for the experience. This is an album I've spent many recent conversations promoting.

Heard your interview from the Aspen Ideas Festival. I'm so happy that I discovered somebody that is singing about my life. Fantastic vocals; Lyrics are amazing; Music combines my love of jazz and indie, with reminders of Joanie Mitchell and Carole King.

  • Great cd.

Found these guys (& gal, that's important, don't forget her) on MySpace. Production is great, her voice is absolutely killing and the writing kicks ass. Only wish the disc was longer. It's great. Buy it!!!

    author: Katy

I've introduced it to a few of my friends, and everyone has loved it thus far!

  • Buy it!
    author: David

An excellent album, so good I bought 3(seriously!). A good mix of low-key and jazzy tracks, the only downside is there are only 6 tracks (oh well, life can't be perfect). Can't wait for there next album.

  • i love her energy and lyrics!
    author: dominique swain

I love Elizabeth's energy and lyrics! She reminds me of Patsy Cline or Fiona Apple. Such delightful music that makes you want to simultaneously want to yell along out of tune and dance around- Momma's Boy is my FAVORITE SONG. Not just of hers, of anyone's!!!!!!

  • Simply Lovely!
    author: Camille

This cd is perfect for a warm sunny day. It's very refreshing. One of the most inventive cds I've heard in a while. And Elizabeth's voice is lovely and inviting. Can't wait to here more! =]

  • Lovely, fun discovery.

I thoroughly enjoyed hearing a fresh and inventive new sound. Both the vocalist and musicians are quite a treat to listen to, and the lyrics are fun too. I will definately be looking for new releases and sharing with my friends and family. Try it, you will like it.

Elizabeth & The Catapult: I'm glad I have ears now more than ever.

  • Amazing work.
    author: Michael

After hearing about E&tC I ordered this CD as soon as possible. It's amazingly done, and great to listen to.

  • Outstanding work!
    author: Laura

Thanks to the myspace page of this band, I got a glimpse of their work and was really impressed. This kind of style always tends to cheer me up from simply listening to the melody, and I appreciate the lyrical aspect of the tunes. This CD was worth the money, which was not a lot spent. Also, the CD Baby website allowing us customers the opportunity of obtaining such wonderful music is generous and pleasing. I thank the band, the producers, and this website for everything I expected from this purchase. Two thumbs up!

  • A fun CD and great service!
    author: Michael

I love Ziman's voice and the band definitely has its own style. I was sorry to miss them at the Paradise Lounge. I look forward to hearing more from Elizabeth and the Catapult in the future. The service at CD Baby is wonderful and they are fun to do business with!

I'm really enjoying this music! I am always trying to find unique sounds that not many people have heard. I love it! I bought the cd for my mom too.

  • a good ep, great live band
    author: Nathan

caught this artist opening for amanda palmer, but the cd was sold out at the merch table. snagged a couple copies here, and it was great. Only disappointment was that the song "perfectly perfect" wasn't on it. waiting for the kill easily the best track, a great way to kick off the cd.

  • Amazing Voice, Amazing Girl, Amazing Music!
    author: Aj

This is seriously the best music I have heard in a LONG time! I read about Elizabeth And The Catapult playing with Amanda Palmer from the Dresden Dolls, and I thought, "okay, I will give this band a chance" I went to their website, and wasn't sure what to classify it. Pop, jazz, what is it? I didn't care, because I loved it so much! Then I went to the best CD STORE in the world (online) CdBaby, and they managed to get the Elizabeth And The Catapult Cd and Elizabeth Ziman's first solo cd, called Diverging Lines! This is wonderful music, sure to make you tap your feet, wipe your eyes, and sometimes even laugh! I definately recommend Elizabeth Ziman and her Catauplt!

  • i love this cd!
    author: Sarah

there is A LOT of music coming out of this little ep! a very full sound. (i love horns!) catchy, but well constructed....elizabeth's voice is extremely instrumental and it holds up well to all of the stuff going on. i cant wait to see them live!!!!!!

  • Classic songwriting and delicious arrangements. Super!
    author: Gaba

This is such a lovely piece of work - some beautiful songwriting that is rooted in a classic sound, part Beatles (and those who love them, think 'Aimee Mann'), a bit Carole King maybe (the lovely 'Right Next To You' beams you into the lush seventies songwriting era). One way or the other, this is the sort of record Jon Brion dreams he's producing at the moment, anytime he's asleep. ;-) One thing that really needs to be mentioned: the production is amazing, simply yummy - imaginative, great arrangements, beautiful sound, poppy-but-never-cliche, doing the songs justice. Horns, electric piano, strings, the whole affair. It's the first CD I got about 15 minutes after I found out the artist even exists - I hope so will you. Can't wait for a full-length album.

  • Get This CD!
    author: Mike

It's so refreshing to hear original artists writing original material that is both groundbreaking and familiar at the same time. I bumped into Elizabeth and the Catapult on Myspace, and impulsively bought this CD immediately after hearing "Waiting for the Kill" just once. The rest of the CD did not disappoint, and is still in heavy rotation in my car. There's a heavy Beatles influence here, but with a cool jazzy twist. There are very few artists that can pull of odd-metered songs that sound natural and fluid, but Elizabeth and the Catapult's songs flow so naturally you'll leave common time behind forever. Get this CD!

  • Incredible!
    author: Amy Krenzer

Love, love, love this CD. Just checked back to the website to purchase it for a few friends. Maybe I should get a dozen copies, it's a great listen. Hope it's not out of stock for long.....

  • simply very good music!
    author: Glen Barrington

A wonderful. . .I'm not sure what to call it! Its too short to call an album (6 songs), I'm an old guy and I don't keep up with that stuff. At any rate I really like the witty and intelligent lyrics (words have meaning!) and Elizabeth's wonderful voice. It's worth every penny, my second best music purchase for 2006. Sorry guys, but you were beat out by Johnny Cash's "Unchained", but that's pretty good company to keep. I heard about them on XM radio, and had a rather hard time finding an outlet for their music. I'm happy to have found this site.

  • unique, catchy, smart, toe tappin music.
    author: sean

unique, catchy, smart, toe tappin music. what a great EP! awesome production, song writing, and performance by all involved. eight dollars? they must be crazy! I love it, and listen to it all the time!

  • Wow! I can't wait to hear a full length!
    author: Jessica Pawli

Lush sounds, amazing vocals, beautiful arangements, smart lyrics, all together enjoyable! I can't wait to hear a full length album. I want the live experience. Play my town!!!

  • Good Stuff
    author: Jessica M

This is, for lack of a better adjective, an amazing EP: Great hooks, thoughtful arranging, squeaky-clean production, and the perfect blend of all the best genres. Elizabeth's jazz roots are still present, but with the help of The Catapult, they've managed to combine it with a more rock/pop sound, leaving you with introspective songwriting to which you can bust a move. GOOD STUFF!!
