Part country-western and part rock and roll, the sound blasting from the stage at an Earl Pickens & the Black Mountain Marauders concert can best be described as "countryrockandwesternroll." Or perhaps as "northern southern rock." Or maybe even as "punktry." Or even . . . well, no matter what you call it, the bottom-heavy thunder and shimmy-twist vibe of this band's music is a force to be reckoned with.
Formed in spring 2000, Earl Pickens & the Black Mountain Marauders is a NYC-based country band that has taken middle-America's music prisoner in the big city and is defiantly refusing to give it back. Mean old harp, some banjo twang, and a full-on double-barrel guitar onslaught slapped down on top of some classic rock and roll bass and drums can only spell trouble for what the average Joe thinks of as country music. Spanning many different genres, the music of Earl Pickens & the Black Mountain Marauders contains elements of country, rock and roll, rockabilly, punk, grindcore, and bluegrass.
The band is comprised of Mr. Pickens on lead vocals and rhythm guitar, Merle Twang on lead guitar, Tink Travers on banjo and harmonica, the Reverend Jedediah P. Houston on acoustic guitar, Chief Dave Strongbow on bass, and Joe Horseman on drums. Some of the Marauders also lay down some sweet harmony vocals here and there, but we forget which ones. They all kind of look the same, what with the cowboy hats and all.
The band's energetic live shows--which have been known to include dancing Elvis impersonators and the tossing-about of Pickens-autographed ladies underwear--have won them a sizable following in New York City. Currently playing three or four shows per month, the boys always pack their venues to the door. Bringing to the table more than just your standard live music fare, EPATBMM instead give their fans an act rife with drunken sing-alongs, rowdy audience participation, unexpected props, wry humor, partial nudity, and devilish good looks. TimeOut New York has called them "...a dang good time!" but you'll just have to call them sir.
So listen up and hold on tight . . . ladies and gentlemen, I present to you, Earl Pickens & the Black Mountain Marauders! Dang.

Super Happy Kickass Country Core
author: JelvisAbsolutely brillant mix of country and rockabilly with punk rock enthusiasm. Great playing, genius songwriting and a sense of humor. This is what rock and roll used to be about and should be again. The rhythm section borders on the orgasmic in their perfection. Yee Haw!
Swagger & Stagger
author: JaneE.P.A.T.B.M.M. are a tough band to slap a label on. They play crazed, energetic music that takes a cue from Hank Williams but with their own punk rock touch. “Midnight, High Noon” and "If I Could Sing Like That" are as close as they come to traditional country. This is mainly gritty rock and roll, the perfect combination of country twang and big city rock. Merle Twang’s guitar is super sharp, with just the right amount of distortion. The drumming is precise; the bass playing, aggressive. Brilliant songwriting; “Opening Band” and “New York Woman” are clever and catchy. All in all, a great rock and roll record. Woman, fetch me my Jack Daniels. Yee-haw!
A great live CD that captures the energy of this unique band.

This CD is just plain fun with great songs, witty banter, and the best cover of I'm on Fire that I've ever heard. I have no idea what kind of music this is, but the Marauders do it better than anyone else.
