notes
Born into a musical family - both parents were professional classical musicians, Dwight began piano lessons at age 4, winning the annual Philadelphia Orchestra Young Artist competition twice, at ages 9 and 12. The prize was the opportunity to perform a concerto movement with the orchestra, the Haydn Concerto in D and the Kabalevsky Concerto No. 3, respectively.
After a promising start, Dwight left classical music and turned to the popular music of the day in his late teens, creating his own solo arrangements. But his real fascination lay with improvisation. Not the typical jazz improvisation, but creating whole cloth from scratch.
Sit at the piano with no clear beginning. Play a note; play another. One note leads to the next, and the played notes determine the course of music. The mind hears the music, the music flows through the fingers, and the result is real-time creation and performance of a work that is musical, melodic, free-ranging yet constructed, a unique piece that cannot be recreated. This is Streaming.
This third recorded album offers ten tracks in a variety of moods and spaces, from the abject realization of "monday morning" to the broad, sweeping theme-and-variations showpiece "streaming," the title track. Enjoy.
