notes
For an example of head-splittingly magnificent guitar playing from Spain, look no further than David Valdes. His debut CD, Paradise Lost blends complex yet appealing pyrotechnics, mega-heavy, earth-crushing riffs, thoughtfully structured, harmonized solos, and neo-classical phrasing. Influenced by greats such as Jason Becker (several cuts are dedicated to him), Marty Friedman, Paul Gilbert, Vinnie Moore and others, Valdes stands alongside these greats with his stunning guitar work. A heavy metallic edge dominates Paradise Lost, which interestingly was mastered by David T. Chastain. Hard to pick highlights here - each cut screams with fury and offers a primer of formidable guitar techniques - you'll just have to get your copy and start practicing!

David Valdes - Paradise Lost
author: Mikolaj FurmankiewiczThis Spaniard was previously associated with much more extreme metal bands, but then influenced by classical composers (Johann Sebastian Bach, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Ludwig van Beethoven, Frederic Chopin, Antonio Vivaldi, Niccolo Paganini) and the instrumentalists of so-called "widdly-widdly" generation (Yngwie Malmsteen, Jason Becker, Marty Friedman, Vinnie Moore, Tony MacAlpine, Paul Gilbert and others), he decided to direct towards virtuosic music. On his debut solo CD, David handled all guitars and other instruments on his own, and entrusted a mastering to a real master, David T. Chastain, haha. I admit that a Spanish guitarist has chosen possibly the best track of development. I am sure that his talent would have gone to waste in previous groups. Mr. David Valdes Miranda is compared to a few famous guitarists, but his greatest axe inspirer is undoubtedly grandiose Jason Becker what finds its confirmation in the tracks like "Legend" and "Time Up!". Next compositions like "Fallen Angel" and "My Enchanted Forest" are adequately influenced by Vinnie Moore and Tony MacAlpine. I can't explain whose cover is a track "Cacophony", rather mention it is very syncopated and backed by powerful sound. His luminous speed reminds me of George Bellas' velocity. We will find solace in Johann Sebastian Bach's "BWV 1046 Adagio". I'd like to point out that he doesn't thoughtlessly copy the masters, but wisely refers to neoclassical originals. The most characteristic factor of his album are a lush guitar wizardry plus creeping and distorted tones embellished with furious and wonderful solos. Spaniard's accelerations are seductive, shredding parts hack like a razor, guitar sound is rich and sleek, all the tracks are aptly arranged, and riffs are heavy, progressive, yet appealing, especially as they are decorated with advanced solos. The CD isn't run out of romantic melodies, noble and royal chops as well. The album is littered with world's virtuosic music on a territory of neoclassical shredding metal. In my opinion, David Valdes is Jason Becker's heir apparent, since he has carried forward American's guitar mission. Even though Mr. Valdes' music is somehow hit, I hope his name will go down in the history of virtuoso kinds od music!

Neo-classic Bliss
author: MattI've been a fan of neo-classical shred guitar since it's beginning. This CD is as good as any of my favorites. Good songs, Good production, and great guitar.
Exactly what I wanted
author: WillUnlike other indie CDs this one is mixed so well and the musicianship is so incredible that I find it hard trying to listen to others.Unlike Malmsteen this guy KNOWS how to record all the instruments, and thankfully restrains from singing and in turn lets his guitar do the work. The music is heavy and not 210bpm shredder works of pure showing off.A great CD and I would certainly buy another from this artist.
Strong, consistent, and impressive!
author: Johnny MillionLike most reading this review, I've never heard of David Valdes. Once I heard the tone and his even-picking I had to hear more. I'm glad I pulled the trigger on this CD. There are a ton of shredder albums available on Guitar9 et al, but so many of them sound like basement tapes. This CD sounds amazing. His tone reminds me of Vinnie Moore, except with a little more grit (that's a good thing). He's not afriad to let you hear his pick and someone mixed the guitar refreshingly hot (why does Yngwie mix his so low all the time? I don't want to hear the singer!) Paradise Lost is well recorded, well performed, and well composed. Valdes may not have reinvented the instrumental metal genre, but he sure gave it a kick in the pants. If you like this kinda stuff, he's got it all. Check it out.
