notes
Cinema 57 is the third release by local tenor saxophonist/composer Dusty York, whose uncompromising style and sound has provided the Portland area with a distinct new voice. The trio is rounded out with Justin Durrie on bass, and Ken Paine on drums. They play all original material by York as they revive and further the tenor trio concept, and explore new ways of phrasing, dynamics, harmony, tension, group interplay, and extended thematic development that reaches beyond the standard formula of improvising. The first three tracks are the current working trio, while the second three tracks feature Dusty's father, tenor player Michael York, with Keith Brush on bass. Dusty also formed and operates Diatic Records, Portland's quickly growing independent jazz record label, featuring many of the area's distinct and original music personalities.
