The brothers Benjii and Christopher Simmersbach draw much of their musical Influence from their childhood spent growing up all over the world; including Thailand, Tanzania, Mali, Senegal, Germany, Italy, and The States (as seen in the award winning German documentary “The Big Pink” ZDF/ARTE) Though the band members are currently living in Los Angeles, Budapest, Berlin, Barcelona and Istanbul, their collective base is in Berlin where they meet to record their music and to cultivate their many projects.
Benjii and Christopher achieved wide notoriety playing with A Subtle Plague (1984-1998, on Rough Trade); the German music magazine ‘Spex’ has called them “one of the best live bands the U.S. underground has to offer”. They toured extensively throughout Europe and the States for ten years, sharing stages with bands such as Therapy, Iggy Pop, Noir Desir, Sonic Youth and Soul Asylum, to name a few. As they were usually traveling with children, mothers, grandmothers and friends, the Rolling Stone magazine Germany called them “The Greateful Dead of the 90ies”.
With The Durgas Benjii (lead vocals, guitar) and Christopher (lead guitar) are continuing the legacy of delivering powerful live performances that has brought them to stages around the world. The addition of Rainer Baumgartner (drums, back-up vocals), Raphael Tschernuth (Bass), and Alex Czerny (hammond, piano), provides a powerful backbone to the new sound; a dynamic and passionate force both in the studio and on the stage.
Cannery Row Records is releasing The Durgas’ debut album “Back To The Start”, with the bonus of a video clip of their song 'The Whiskey Tree' by Iris Stark/Avistura, and three bonus tracks recorded live in Hawaii, finally giving their audience a chance to take home piece of the live performances that have garnered them international recognition. “Back To The Start” was recorded in Berlin, mixed by Boris Wilsdorf (producer of the legendary German band Einstürzende Neubauten), mastered by Noa Winter Lazerus (Tom Waits, The Rolling Stones), and includes various guest appearances, f.ex. by their long time friend Chuck Prophet playing solo guitar on “Wish I Could”.
