notes

STRIDE is a stunning new CD recorded by Doug Riley. Tyler Yarema, and John Roby join Doug, a recipient of The Order of Canada and known as one of the most accomplished players in North America, on this exciting album. The music, a mixture of originals and standards, is inspired by the play of the same name, written by Keith Whiting.
In describing this album Doug said, "It gave me the opportunity to write and arrange material in solo, duo and trio settings, and to make my own unique contribution to this intriguing art form. It brings me full circle from Fats Waller, my original inspiration as a piano player, to recording music, of which he was one of the originators. It represents the culmination of all my years of playing and study".

STRIDE is a piano style that originated in the early 20th Century; George Gershwin, Cole Porter, Errol Garner, Art Tatum, Thelonious Monk, Duke Ellington and Count Basie are just some of the pianists who either played Stride, or were influenced by it. The most accomplished players were, Fats Waller, Willie The Lion Smith, and above all, James P. Johnson.

STRIDE is the music to the upcoming play of the same name. The play unfolds in the record setting summer heat of Chicago 1935. It is the story of Louis Carter, a young piano man, working days so he can play his kind of music, cracking off a piece of his soul every night to Stride for an oblivious audience in a club where the chauffeured Caddies never stop. Louis Carter is on his own, he's got a mom in heaven and a broke down deadbeat dad he has nothing good to say about.
The 19 songs on this great sounding album include solo, duo, and astounding trio performances by Doug, Tyler, and John, with a special bonus track featuring Jackie Richardson on vocals.

I am very happy with my purchase of Stride. I love classic piano driven jazz music and this cd is great from start to finish. Doug Riley really shows us why he is referred to as Dr Music and along with the other musicians on the album, combine to make an interesting take on this classic piano style.

Stride is a wonderful collection of the complex piano style. Legend Doug Riley's playing really shines on this album as he effortlessley glides through each piece. Stride is a lively jazz filled album I am glad to have in my collection!
