notes

The Drunken Immortals formed in 1998 in the extreme desert climate of Tempe, Arizona. DI's philosophy revolves around music and community, as witnessed by their lyrical content- the immortals aren't interested in making commercials, either for themselves or anyone else. "Love your enemy is the key, and so we send out a frequency vibrating positively, carrying a message we feel compelled to deliver," the band states in it's manifesto.

DI delivers it's message via its own interpretation of hip-hop, an amalgamation of rhythm-rhyme poetry and singing set to intricate, jazzy instrumentation. The DJ uses his turntables as instruments rather than just scratching over the grooves laid down by the cast of virtuoso musicians; the entire band gels into one organism reacting to the energy in the room, making the Drunken Immortals as comfortable playing to four people as four thousand.

For the past four years DI has played locally to hundreds of heads in the community the band resides in, as well as traveling regularly to rock venues across the Southwest. As well as touring the west coast and the Midwest. Regularly performing benefit shows for charities as diverse as Food Not Bombs and the Child Crisis Center. The Drunken Immortals received the Furious Styles Award in 1999 from the Styles Upon Styles Crew for their dedication, and contributions to Arizona hip-hop. In 2000,2001 and 2002, DI was nominated for Best Hip-Hop Group in Phoenix by the Phoenix New Times, and won by popular vote in 2001 and 2002. They were also nominated for Best Rhythm & Groove, Listeners Choice, and Most Cutting Edge in the local AIMS awards.

With several releases in the recent past, including the "Face the Music" CD, the stellar "Drunken Poetry" 12" Ep and the latest CD "Drunken Immortals Live" the Immortals have established themselves as a cornerstone of underground hip-hop in the southwest, and are now attempting to spread their sound and message to all corners of the world. As a completely independent entity, replete with it's own production team (which is much sought after by artists in their community), Drunken Immortals have succeeded thus far in their goal of spreading new sounds and ideas through creative expression. Using hip-hop as their vehicle to reach out, to educate, to broadcast the frequency that reverberates through the Drunken Immortals neurons and synapses, the band is touching listeners where it counts- in the mind, the ears, and the asses that won't stop shaking.

"We were blessed with the ability to express ourselves in this way," the band says. "We hope you like it."
