notes
As a musician and vocalist, calling Matt "Doctor" Fink's talents and interests eclectic would be an understatement.
The keyboardist got his start in music early by studying classical and jazz piano for 10 years as a child.
By the time he was 12, his first band, Odella, was playing Top 40 hits of the 60s and 70s in garages, church basements and school gymnasiums throughout Minneapolis.
At 16, Fink joined Spiff Cool and the Keeno Jets and toured the Upper Midwest playing 50s cover tunes at high school dances and nightclubs.
When he graduated from his Minneapolis high school, he played rock and pop with the band Zachariah and R&B,funk and disco with the B.T. Rockets.
In the fall of 1978, he joined Prince's band, which would later be named the Revolution and eventually the New Power Generation.
Fink toured the world with Prince, rubbing shoulders with members of the Rolling Stones, jamming with Eric Clapton, hanging out with Bruce Springsteen and Sting, and of course collaborating with Prince on albums including Dirty Mind, Controversy, Purple Rain, Around the World in a Day, Parade and Sign O' the Times.
Since leaving the band in December of 1991, The Doctor has been spending his time in his Minneapolis recording studio, StarVu, producing artists, writing video game music for Activision and soundtracks for radio and television.
Friends who worked on the CD: Dave Barry, Guitar, tour credits: Janet Jackson, Cher and K.D.Lang. James Behringer, Guitar, tour credits: Bobby Caldwell, Laura Brannigan, Jeff Lorber and Kitaro. Bobby Schnitzer, Guitar, played on the hit song "Funky Town" by Lipps. Inc. Star Williams, vocals, credits: backup singer for Mariah Carey. Connie Olson, vocals. Andrusilla Moseley, vocals.

author: Doug CornellFeeling a little down lately? Don't have the energy you once had? Relax, because the doctor is ready to take you on a special journey that will supercharge your spirit. If you've watched MTV, you know who Dr. Fink is - the scrub-wearing keyboard genius behind the sound of Prince and the Revolution (later the New Power Generation). Since '91, the Doctor has been on his own, creating music for video games and film soundtracks. This new album, Ultrasound, is an energetic blend of funk and rock. The album's 11 songs feature FInk's keyboards and vocals, while guests are brought in for electric guitar and additional singing. Opening with the title track, Fink stays within the musical framework he helped create with Prince. As a steady dance beat pulses, a flanged guitar accompanies multi-layered and processed vocals. The result is bright and enjoyable, a perfect catharsis to the rap metal currently clogging the airwaves. Fink moves into melodic-instrumental territory with "Ecstasy." an upbeat tune perfect for the rave dance floor. The sing-along chorus of the mid-tempo tune, "Nobody Cried," belies the song's tale of a life wasted by drug abuse. Fink demonstrates his film soundtrack prowess with a lush instrumental ("Nebulosity") then jumps back into vocal dance/rock territory ("Nothin' But a Smile"). The album enters middle-of-the-road territory with the slow pop ballad "Night Flight" (featuring the lead vocals of Nurse Andra), then thrusts a slam-bang guitar riff at you in the rocker "Cyber Monkey." Retro-synth sounds are featured in the instrumental "Sonic Rave," and a nice synth horn riff powers the ultra-funky "I'm Gone," which showcases a stacked Mowtown-inspired backing vocals. Fink explains the challenge of loneliness in the cathartic "Save Me." One can't help but wonder how difficult it must have been leaving the fold of Prince's band and entering the highly-competitive world of independent production and songwriting. It would be an understatement to say that Ultrasound is expertly produced. Fink is a wizard in the studio, and doesn't just rely on keyboard riffing to get his point across. All of the songs on Ultrasound are fully realized and ready for mainstream radio or film soundtracks.
The Doctor Will See You Now!
author: Ernest L Sewell, IvJust how long have you been waiting to see the Doctor? Well it's been over 10 years since Matt 'Doctor' Fink left Prince's camp, having served as keyboardist in The Revolution and the NPG, but the wait is over. Ultrasound covers a wide spectrum of techno, technofunk and straight ahead R&B. Some tracks like "Ecstasy", "Cyber Monkey" and "Sonic Rave" stand out as great instrumental tracks ready to turn a club on its ear, whereas ballad's like "Night Flight" and Fink covering lead vocals on the title track and "Nobody Cried" (among others) all have their own unique flavor, but somehow fit perfectly together. Ultrasound, which houses a picture of Fink's first son Maxwell's ultrasound on the cover (headphones extra), is more than an impressive debut from an artist fans have long waited to hear from. Fink has worked production, writing, and even a long stint at K-Tel as special projects manager, but it's on Ultrasound that his writing, keyboard and yes singing talents really shine through. This album deserves more than a check-up. You need to be admitted for overnight listening! Check The Ernest Experience online for details about an upcoming interview w/ Dr. Fink.
