Drew Smith draws inspiration from Van Morrison, Steely Dan, and Paul Simon. His songwriting is distinctly original with a style that relies on maintaining a pop sensibility and staying true to the singer/songwriter aesthetic. At the same time, he experiments with more sophisticated musical devices such as odd time signatures and jazz influenced melodies.
Smith’s love of classic R&B prompted the makeup of his 7-piece band. His partnership with Matt Russell (arranger/band leader/keyboardist) has helped bring his band to a professional level unmatched in the Austin local scene. The songs depend on Russell’s tight arrangements, and together, the two musicians have assembled a soulful band that provides an exceptional and unique listening experience.
