notes

Combine the smoky cellars of a Weimar-era cabaret with the rock n' roll fury of Joan Jett, PJ Harvey and The Violent Femmes and you have a remote idea of what to expect when experiencing The Dresden Dolls.

Ever since taking up arms in mid-2000, the über-dynamic duo of Amanda Palmer (Piano/Vox) and Brian Viglione (Drums) has been selling out clubs in Boston, New York and beyond. Palmer accompanies her confessional story-songs with a thunderous and shimmering piano style that rests on the shoulders of Jerry Lee Lewis, Kurt Weill and Nina Simone. Viglione's jazz and hardcore-influenced drums are the perfect foil, providing in turns a delicate cradle of rhythm and a piercing bed of nails onto which Palmer lays her raw, tragicomic lyrics.

With the their new debut album, produced by Martin Bisi (Swans, Sonic Youth), receiving accolades from both mainstream and underground media, the Dolls are poised to transcend cult status and smash all commonly held ideas on what a rock band is supposed to be. Their awe-striking live energy and singular look has earned them opening slots for Beck, the B-52s and Jane's Addiction, a tour with the Legendary Pink Dots, a victory in the 2003 WBCN Rock and Roll Rumble and a quickly growing army of devoted fans from ages 5 to 85.

  • escape from all you knew about rock
    author: ken lawrence

In 2003 while reading the boston globe and stories about the rock n' roll rumble the yearly competition of ledgentary rocker WBCN i bigan to hear about this different band the blended piano pop with rocck and other things you wouldn't connect with it. well after listening to this for the first time i wondered how i was going to write about it. well the closest thing i can get to it, is early elton john. if you remember his early albums they were lush orchestrated works with songs like your song. but when you saw him live, it wasw just a base, and drumber, and his piano. and he rocked. if you can get your hands on the classic 11/17/70, listen to it. this was the first radio broadcast of a a live rock concert on the old WABC fm in new york. this is like that. like elton in a different time this music would be played on stations as different as the old WHDH boston, and it's old sister station WCOZ. Yeah lisa carlen would have played this on her mid day show so you should get your hands on this one now before the secret gets out. Oh yeah just a side note, i'm in love with amanda palmer after listening to it.

  • Warning!!!! This is a highly addictive band.

when i'm teetering on a razor's bloody edge i crank this cd up; afterwhich, suffering another day in this miserable world seems just a bit more endurable. even when i'm sound of mind, i just can't get enough of this talented band. the music is decadent; yet, biting and real - not an easy mix to pull off. "robert" recommended jill tracy and after listening to the snippets on CD Baby i agree. thnx for the heads up robert. wanted to add that you can also get the cd directly from Dresden Dolls website if CD Baby doesn't have copies on hand. (http://www.dresdendolls.com/) Dolls, if you ever read these reviews, just wanted to say thanks for an awesome sound. looking forward to your next venture.

  • spectaculary insane
    author: lat

Very stressing very nerve pounding! never heard anything like this before. Kinda like a very slow death song which you just want to hear again and again to your grave.

  • Beautifully fresh ~ There is hope in music yet!
    author: Blind the Deafened Moon

This album is without a doubt the best thing I've heard this year. Not often does a band (or duo!) master the theatrics of Switchblade Symphony and blend it with the lyrical writing-stylings and musical sense of Rasputina, and still push creative boundaries. The Dresden Dolls are able to go from melancholia, to tongue-in-cheek antics, to serious themes and back without ever losing you along the way. It's definitely a beacon of light in these hazy days of the same ol' same. I'm also happy radio is starting to pick them up (at least here in Columbus). Hope to see them on tour soon. Support art. Buy music. Get The Dresden Dolls. Pretty please?

    author: becky

it moved me in a very deep way, relating to my whole life including masochism, and sexal abuse and confusion. being a devout tori fan i feel bad saying that i felt more emotion and anguish than i've ever known, but it's the truth. i had goosebumps all night!

    author: Scott

when i bought this cd i had only heard one song from it and i liked it. i was skeptical about the cd though because usually when i buy cds i like one or two songs and the rest blow. but this cd is amazing, it stayed in my cd player for 6 days straight before i changed it. i can not stop listening to it. amazing would fall short of describing this cd. even if you havent heard anything off this, buy it anyway. its very original and i have never heard anything like it. ahh its so awesome.

  • what a nice doll...
    author: Dasha

This cd is exactly what my soul has been craving for months now. It's angry and sad and unique and beautiful and even disgusting all at once. It is true that there will be people who will not understand this music but it's quite fathomable and stands on top of a class of its own. The Dresden Dolls kicked major ass with this album.

  • Stellar as fuck!!
    author: Tonic Brat

Short and simply, this band KICKS ASS. I havent heard something so fresh in way over a year, they capture everything good about underground music and make it pulsate with a beautiful poetic glow, finally something catchy!

This cd put hope into my heart. The hope that not all talent has faded from the world. This CD, no this GROUP is a must have for your collection. If they make it, you should have it...or there is something wrong.

  • Dust off the Good Stuff!
    author: Kendall

Ahh, I have not heard something so original and captivating since Suzy and the Banshees, Nina Hagen and Lene Lovich more than 20 years ago. Very fresh and engaging! (My wife hates the Dolls, so there's the proof they are great)

  • Very good and original
    author: hevi

Great album. I listen it every day. All songs are good but i like songs 2,4,6 & 10 most.

  • Amazing
    author: Jane

Dresden Dolls are one of the most amazing bands I've heard in a long time. I thought more of their songs would be punky like Girl Anachronism but most of them tend to be more laid back, often featuring several tempo changes. The music and vocals are extraordinarily effective, being emotionally expansive without being too overdone. Amanda's lyrics are particularly striking. I thought musically and stylistically they were somewhat reminiscent of Rasputina. Amanda's voice also reminds me of the likes of Klaus Nomi or Nina Hagen, for doing a kind of alternative operatic style and pulling it off successfully. This band deserve to be huge.

  • These guys are wicked awesome
    author: Jake

These guys are WICKED AWESOME! I just got back from listening to their CD, and I'm.. I'm speachless, they just, rock!

  • Brazenly honest and energetic duo.
    author: Christina

One of the best and most refreshing CD's I've heard in a long time. The Dresden Dolls are two bundles of energy that add incredible amounts of personality and nuances to honest lyrics. Both Amanda Palmer and Brian Vigglione converse with their precise and dynamic playing. A very impressive CD that manages to capture the raw intensity of the musicians.

  • Truly unique
    author: Cari

It's been a very long time since I've enjoyed a CD as much as this one. Truly unique and innovative, and more than deserving of praise. Money well spent, for it's a CD that won't leave your CD player for a long, long time.

  • truly refreshing
    author: Mark T

Very dynamic, refreshing, exciting, powerful music coming from what one might normally consider a "limited" unit of piano+drums+voice. In fact, the sparser construction of the songs merely foregrounds the strong lyrics and reinforces the overall compositional purity even more. Loved it.

  • author: Chris

Great CD. I haven't wanted to remove the liner notes on a CD for awhile so that I could follow along but, this one changed that. I found the music to be catchy and the lyrics to be thought provoking. Now, the only real problem I have is trying to get it back from a friend who's liked it just as much as I have. I look forward to hearing more from The Dresden Dolls and I hope they make out to my way at some point.

  • band anachronism
    author: Lemmy

If this is the way the operation made her, I'll take two. Such poor medical care makes me proud to be a Bostonian! Even Earl is smitten, and he started painting his eye-brows to boot. Please, send help.

  • Incredibly good for a first cd
    author: Ken Joseph

I have not heard a new CD this good in years. The excellent lyrics are insightful, intelligent and moving. The music is very good, as is Amanda's voice. This is a CD I will be listening to for years.

  • Intense, emotional, humorous
    author: James

An outstanding CD that is dark without being overly pretentious, witty without being silly, emotional and intense. The sound is so full that I was surprised to realize the main instruments are percussion and a piano. Amanda's voice is very expressive and the lyrics are sharp yet poetic. Very highly recommended.

  • best album this year
    author: anna maria

this album is the best thing i've heard all year..passionate, quirky, rich. can't recommend it enough.
