notes
No one can sing a story like Doug Spartz. While most of today's artists were still cutting their teeth, he was out playing in the small beer joints, dance halls, and roadhouses across the country. His voice carries with it a piece of every smoky bar he ever played in. But as this project will attest, it goes down smooth like a glass of aged whiskey. While others would be content to sit back and enjoy their autumn years, Doug chose to go back to playing his music. His life has taken him on a Walter Mittyish journey from a business in Africa to a publishing company in Nashville with more then 30 albums to his name; he has helped create what is undoubtedly his best work to date. This album will take the listener through an emotional ride-from a father’s pain to a lover’s loss-every heartfelt step.
Doug is joined by several artist friends on this project including Jonathan Edwards, whose 1971 hit “Sunshine” is re-done in a bluegrass/acoustic blend; Bobby Vee in a classic rock n' roll song “Bop-alena”, Billy Lee Riley, Sun Records recording giant on a poignant cover of the Bob Dylan song “Love Minus Zero”; rising country artist Todd Fritsch on the powerful “Name On the Wall”; rockabilly artist Rick Hollister on “Hot Rod Lincoln”; legendary Texan Big John Mills on “She Had What It Takes”; the World Famous Cuttin’ Crew on “Nuthin’ Much”; and Sarah Jo Roark lends her haunting vocals on emotional cut "Sweet Amy".
Settle back into a comfortable chair and listen as Doug Spartz & Friends take you on this musical journey with “American Stories, Lies, & Tales”.

We need more CDs like this!
author: Betsy BurnamDoug Spartz has a warm husky voice full of compassion that lets you know in advance you really want this man at your next party - you know he's your friend without even meeting him. If his voice is in its "autumn", then I'll wish for fall. The songs on American Stories are all great, but the heart-wrenching Number 29 (The Rocket) tells a story we all need to think deeply about, and no matter your politics, Name On the Wall helps us understand and appreciate the heartache of sacrifice. I Wish I Could, Clumsy Me, and Sweet Amy are stories of regret and loss, but never sappy. The up-tempo rockers make you want to get up and dance. This is a challening yet comforting and happy CD all at once; it brings people together. That's saying a lot in this country today. Be proud of yourself, Doug - I am!
Interesting mix of good songs - a couple that are really great
