Doug Smith grew up in Winona, Minnesota graduating from Cotter High School and Winona
State University and did graduate studies at the University of Minnesota. Doug began performing
professionally at the age of fifteen by playing guitar in various rock, pop and jazz bands at dances
and clubs throughout southern Minnesota and Wisconsin. Doug continued performing as a
bassist for jazz bands and symphony orchestras and as cellist for a string quartet. Completing his
musical education, Doug studied string pedagogy with Milton Davenport, classical guitar with
Jeffrey Van, guitar and lute with Charles Pederson, and composition with Dr. Paul Fetler and
Dominic Argento.
