notes
About the Album: Gungle Dungn was recorded at the "Gungle Dungeon" between January and November of the 2,007th year of our Lord. As you might have guessed, the album was named after where it was recorded. The songs were chosen from about 40 songs Yordan wrote for the record. The album was made in attempt to create something of a "psychodelic soul" record. I have a very specific image in my head of what the music would look like could it be seen, and it's shapes and motion and colors. When I think about describing that to people, the real life image that pops into my head is a little stream that ran through the back yard of one of my childhood homes in Virginia. It ran steady and straight exactly where it was supposed to. And the tall grasses, gnats, frogs, grasshoppers and fog moved arbitrarily around the water, but never left it. I always tried to treat Yordan's songs like the water and all the other noises and additional sounds like the things that surrounded the water.
Doubledutch works like this:
a. Yordan (she, her, hers) writes a song on guitar, piano, accordion, cello, viola or any other instrument she understands.
b. She records said song into her laptop using its internal microphone and GarageBand.
c. She opens the Firefox internet browser and logs into www.gmail.com assuming the identity of jordandoubledutch@gmail.com
d. She types in something that makes no sense, like this: "hey dhani-here are some new things to listen to. The second one is really bare, and I couldn't get my voice not to peak in the chorus without the rest sounding like a puddle. it's too fast too. oh, and for the april 12th one, i was thinking you could sing it? only if you want to. i really want you to play your guitar on it though. sorry about the wierd glitchy noises. love, yordan"
e. She attaches said song to this "e-mail" and addresses "e-mail" to dhanidoubledutch@gmail.com.
f. Sending...
g. Later, Dhani (he, him, his) assumes the identity of dhanidoubledutch@gmail.com, receives "e-mail," and reads.
h. He types something equally asinine in response, like this:
"Haha! That is some tight shit. I can't believe you made that. That's weed machine for sure. Come record that."
i. Sending...
j. Days later, Yordan goes to the "Gungle Dungeon Recording Lair" where Dhani lives to record said song with super tech equipment and fresh gear using top-secret methods.
k. Dhani spends the next few months executing production work, which is also top-secret. The only thing known about it, is that he uses, primarily, two sound stretching techniques he pioneered. One is called "NoneYr" and the other is called "BeesWax."
l. The whole process is repeated until a record has been created.
About the duo: doubledutch is a dynamic two-piece based in Portland, Oregon, featuring the sugary vocals of Jordan Bagnall (of Typhoon) and the shimmying drum beats and phrenetic effects of Dhani Rosa of Eskimo & Sons notoriety.
Yordan and Dhani hate most things about each other, but mutually, they enjoy:
Burritos, Thai Food, and Beyonce Knowles.
They also share some dislikes as well, such as:
Fixed gears, bike messengers, messenger bags, track stands, "skidding".
Album reviews:
"...a weird, wonderful record, brimming with creative, unconventional sounds and desperately gorgeous vocals." - Portland Mercury
"Taking the ornate indie-pop template of Eskimo & Sons and adding a few shades of, well, soul, the duo of Jordan Bagnall and Dhani Rosa have made a convincing homage to pop of both the widespread and bedroom variety." - Willamette Week
